Harlock is the archetypical Romantic hero, a space pirate with an individualist philosophy of life. He is as noble as he is taciturn, rebellious, stoically fighting against totalitarian regimes, whether they be earth-born or alien. In his own words, he "fight[s] for no one's sake... only for something deep in [his] heart".

He does not fear death, and is sometimes seen wearing clothing with the number 42 on it. In Japanese culture, the number 42 is associated with death (the numbers, pronounced separately as "four two", sound like the words "shi ni"—meaning "to death").

That's pretty similar to the 2002 TV series Firefly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_%28TV_series%29), then made into the 2005 movie Serenity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_%28film%29) by director Joss Whedon.

A marvelous, inspired series... one of the very best. Anyone who's seen either the series or the movie is likely to agree.

One of the main and very interesting points about 'Space Pirate Captain Harlock' story/film is:

His ship which is the last of it's kind is made of 'Dark-Matter' and it acts just like 'Black-Goo' the ship is virtually indestructible and grants the same to Cpt Harlock!

The whole story makes the film well worth watching, it has a point to it about mankind!

Yes. Most of the cast (and Joss Whedon himself) have always said that Firefly, the TV series that preceded Serenity, was the best thing they ever did. It should have run and run and run.

The trailer above is NOT a good one. It completely misses all the humor... there's a lot of it. Action movies should always contain a great deal of fun (and Joss Whedon really understands this!) — but it was quite missing in the trailer.

Back to Captain Harlock. Apologies to Atlas... :focus:

Thanks for the mention of Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Firefly/Serenity. I saw a couple episodes of Firefly and it was good, but ended up getting busy and forgot about it. Time to watch them!

Sorry, but if you'll allow one more Firefly diversion (yes I was totally hooked)... The cast and especially Joss were crushed when it was cancelled. Serenity was a good movie but you could tell it didn't quite have the spirit that the series had, though it definitely had its moments. The cast all said they absolutely loved working the series and they all became family. They would all eat lunch and hang out on the ship, as if were really a ship, every day. Nathan Fillion said if he had a million dollars he would have continued the series on the internet. That show had it all. New thread time if there are others who want to gush about it, count me in.
