Do you remember?

The film Alien Nation was a hit in 1988, so the fledgling Fox Network figured building off its success with a human-alien buddy cop show was a can’t-miss concept....

The Storyline:

250,000 genetically-modified refugee alien "Newcomers" crashed on Earth in a massive slave ship. They were quarantined for three years, and released in 1988. Now, it's 1991 and they're slowly, reluctantly, being accepted as humanity's new neighbors.

The Newcomers have two hearts and bald, spotted heads. They're extremely strong. They're highly intelligent. They get drunk on sour milk. And seawater burns them as if it were hydrochloric acid.

Our show opens with police officer Matthew Sykes and his Newcomer partner, George Francisco, fighting crime in Los Angeles.

History:

Alien Nation: The Series was one of Fox’s few initial successes. But a financial shortage hit the network in their first year, and their executives cancelled all of their dramatic series for the 1990-91 season. Season One of the show ended on a cliffhanger, infuriating fans.

Fast-forward. Four years later, the network has had a change of management, who decide to produce a series of five, two-hour tv movies (with the entire original cast) that picked up where the series finale cliffhanger left off. All five are linked below.

Opening Narrative:

"That was the scene in California's Mojave Desert five years ago our historic first view of the Newcomers' ship. Theirs was a slave ship, carrying a quarter million beings, bred to adapt and labor in any environment. But they'd washed ashore on Earth, with no way to get back to where they came from. And in the last five years, the Newcomers have become the latest addition to the population of Los Angeles."

The Cast:

* Gary Graham played Matthew Sykes.
* Eric Pierpoint played George Francisco
* Michelle Scarabelli played George’s wife Susan. Scarabelli had previously been known for playing Jo Santini on Airwolf and Connie Hall on Dallas.

* George's baby daughter Vessna was a puppet, as it would have been illegal to use the heavy alien rubber-headed makeup on an infant. Between the first and second movies, the puppet was destroyed, so the writers threw in a storyline about her being encased in a cocoon, presumably so they wouldn’t have to bother with the character any more.

Racism and Language:

An ongoing theme in the show is human xenophobia, and the sociological impact of a diverse alien civilization of recently-freed slaves merging with our own. Many episodes, especially the pilot, make reference to the civil rights movement, America's history of slavery and oppression of African Americans. Characters sometimes use slurs (the "n" word and others) to make "they're just like us" points about the Newcomers.

The Show (1989-1990):

1) Pilot
2) Fountain Of Youth
3) Little Lost Lamb
4) Fifteen With Wanda (With Lori Petty as Wanda)
5) The Takeover
6) The First Cigar
7) Night of the Screams (With Mitch Pileggi)
8) Contact
9) Three To Tango (With Alan Scarfe)
10) The Game (With Andreas Katsulas)
11) Chains Of Love
12) The Red Room (With Patricia Heaton)
13) The Spirit Of '95
14) Generation To Generation
15) Eyewitness News (With Angela Bassett)
16) Partners
17) Real Men
18) Crossing The Line
19) Rebirth (Alan Thompson reprises his role as “Peter Rabbit” from the 1988 movie.)
20) Gimme, Gimme (With Alan Fudge and Armin Shimerman)
21) The Touch
22) Green Eyes

The Movies:

* Alien Nation: Dark Horizon (1994)
* Alien Nation: Body and Soul (1995)
* Alien Nation: Millennium (1996)
* Alien Nation: The Enemy Within (1996)
* Alien Nation: The Udara Legacy (1997)

I liked this show and its movies much more than I ever cared about Star Trek. It was cheesy, but a good sort of cheesy. There are some touches to the show that feel ahead of their time...having the opening theme sung in the Tenctonese language, for instance, that's something I can totally imagine today, in, like, a higher-budget HBO version of the show, and it would be studied and lauded. Strangely it's also the plot of the movie District 9...

Thanks for reminding me of this show. It became a favourite of mine, and I rate it at least as good as Star Trek. As far as I know it's not been repeated, unlike Star Trek. I can't remember any of the movies--- they may not have made it to Australia. I fully agree with your point about Racism and Language. It would be very appropriate to repeat again now, with the huge refugee migration going on all over the world.

I too wish they would bring Alien Nation back. It could replace the shows about Zombies and Vampires!!

Wow I just watched this movie on YouTube it was great actually , they were slaves and they couldn't remember anything but had like a fear inside them subconsciously. I didn't get to the end because my mom and sister kept nagging me turn this weird stuff off.

Funnily enough yesterdays Dr.Who had a similar story line
which began in the 50th year episode last year , when 20
million shape shifting aliens were given asylum on earth ,
and they even have hybrids.

Actually this episode was written by the same man who wrote the episode ''Kill the Moon'' Maybe you remember that, it was one of the ones from the last series where the solution was to just sit back and do nothing. A must to see.. :) Now back to topic my friend :p

Yeah I have seen it and most of the Scy - fy series and films aired over the years,
and I am always saying that Science fact and fiction drive each other. Every
concept humans can think up has been in one or other medium, and once its been
thought it has come into creation and sooner or later into reality...LOL

Alien Nation was brought out at a time when disclosure seemed possible
and if you look back at the 80's and 90's there were some good scy -fy series
and the odd good UFO doc and unexplained series on the mainstream TV.

Alien Nation, have the complete series, way to good of a show. Have only seen one movie but thanks for the heads up on that. Here are some other series you might delve into. I found these at the top.

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. with Bruce Cambell who also did the movie "Army of Darkness"

MAX Headroom, Short lived series but will blow you away with the content.

Gaia, yes space 1999 was an excellent series, loved the concept of flying the moon. I have one more series that I do believe was on prior to the x-files. It is called Twin Peaks an 80's vintage. This show was just strange and exciting.

Back in 1999 it was entertainment. I believe we have all grown to realism and possibilities, and now probabilities. Looking back, humanoid masking with reptilian skull underneath perhaps was just a story. But we have come to realization that at least for me, it was a seed that was dropped so see how humans would react if and when the real deal comes our way. Alien nation was the trailer for more to come.

Different movies same topic...In The Hunger Games, children are forced to fight to the death in annual televised tournaments. Somehow these games are intended to prevent an uprising against an oppressive governement. In Logan’s Run, anyone over 29 must report to a ritual called “Carrousel” where they are put to death err ''renewed''

Logan’s Run is a prophetic masterpiece. Just the whole truth of our time indeed…

Thank! It bring me some old memories from my childhood... :)

‘Did you know that the United Nations intends to have biometric identification
cards in the hands of every single man, woman and child on the entire planet
by the year 2030? And did you know that a central database in Geneva,
Switzerland will be collecting data from many of these cards?

Previously, I have written about the 17 new “Global Goals” that the UN launched
at the end of September. Even after writing several articles about these new Global
Goals, I still don’t think that most of my readers really grasp how insidious they
actually are. This new agenda truly is a template for a “New World Order”, and if
you dig into the sub-points for these new Global Goals you find some very
alarming things.’

This subject reminds me of the oil myth; that it will run out.The black oil in X-files movies shows kinda what these types of conspiracies are, lies and propaganda to gain advantage of certain energy markets. Human beings are a energy market, "The" main one. See the human battery symbolism in the Matrix and of course the literal human food being, I must add to the list Jupiter Ascending and the harvesting of humans soul...

not its a 'continuum'. Now this is fun for me as Ion has said that Hollywood

and visa versa as I have already said this on the Alien nation thread and
many others the . Science , Scy -fy drives one another into creating
parts of our reality.

Why this tickled me is that this recording is from 2009 and released
around 2011/12 ,just in time for the Time travel series Continuum.
Coincidence ?? ..LOL

One of the stars of Continuum (Roger R Cross) is in another very good sci-fi mini series called First Wave.
It has it all. Secret Nostrodamus predictions, Consciousness sending ET's, Cloning centers, Moral stories and more!
There is even an episode (about child mind control through music) that indirectly mentions my part of London. (My jaw hit the floor when I heard this).
Canada is responsible for some of todays finest sci-fi Actors & Actresses in my opinion.
Sebastian Spence plays the lead role very well as Subject 117 & I feel this series was overshadowed by the X-Files.

Check it out you will love it.

New Star Trek TV series to premiere in 2017 ( though it is likely to be pay per view )

The original Star Trek series debuted in 1966

A new Star Trek television series will launch in January 2017, CBS has announced.
According to the show's website, it "will introduce new characters seeking imaginative
new worlds and new civilizations".The hugely successful show franchise celebrates
its 50th anniversary in 2016. "There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new
series," said David Stapf, president of CBS TV studios.

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009)
and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) will serve as executive producer for the series.
"Everyone here has great respect for this franchise and we're excited to launch its
next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman,
someone who knows this world and its audience intimately," added Stapf.

The series will begin with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network
before running exclusively on CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video
on demand and live streaming service.

It is also expected to be distributed around the world by CBS Studios International.
The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five television series, and
is still licensed on platforms across over 190 countries. According to StarTrek.com
the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

The new series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond, to
be released in summer 2016.

Cool on the Star Trek stuff. Is that new movie another JJ abrams? I have one that is so out there you have to find the original that was done in the 80's, The remake was not as good but plays okay. The book is way too much.

The Lathe of Heaven by Ursla K Levine. The original movie had Bruce Davidson as the main star. Not sure how to spell the Authors name but read quite a few books by Her. This story is about a man that has dreams and everytime he dreams it totally changes the world.

Add this to the tv series, Sliders

Looks like I have at least two more scifi-shows to see now.:)

Few thoughts about Continuum. I've seen the whole series and though it was rather dark, I think it was rather a warning of what kind of future is ahead of us if we don't do something about it. Everybody policing everybody, police state, burning books, transhumanism, surveillance and war between government and idealistic people who see through the tyranny (people like us?). So I thought the show was all about better future really.

I remember Alien Nation too. It was very progressive (even if i was not yet in my teens also). Thanks for the heads up all once more as reminder of something else to watch again with wiser eyes (i hope haha)

There were a couple of other series in the 1990s also that were cool which may have missed the radar of many also very valid too:

'Space Above and Beyond'
About a group of clones bread for interstellar space military and fighting an alien race a bit similar to the spiders in Babylon 5. It ended too early also. With my awareness now seems way too reliant with much eluded to. Perhaps huge soft disclosure.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112173/?ref_=nv_sr_1
zGdkjmaW4Fs

Dark Skies
About an Alien parasite invasion that interwoven much of history very cleverly. Something that many movies, series do as common practice. For me, this was the first time i even witnessed anything like it. Great cast.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115151/?ref_=nv_sr_2

I really enjoyed a couple of the recent series also. Continuum was for me outstanding. Well worth re-watching to see the things i missed. Dark Matter for me has been very good. Roger Cross (as sorry, someone else mentioned) a part also. Killjoys interesting and revealing more as it went. Falling Skies was cool in it's own apocalyptic way also.
