Hey guys -
I'm in a sharing mood this morning = )
Doing my early morning rounds of the MSM and finding some interesting articles on the BBC, Today, Dec 1 2010.
As we've all been monitoring the cold snaps recently, I guess BBC felt it necessary to share with us this well-prepared piece on the district of Oymyakon, in Siberia.
In a place where winter temperatures can drop to as low as -60C, you'd think rugged winter wear was a necessity.
Luckily for the people of Oymyakon, the bank is there to help.
Fur hats and long fur coats are everywhere.
A long fur coat can cost more than $1550 (£1000), beyond the purse of many people where the average wage is the equivalent of $600 (£400) a month. You can take out a mortgage on a fur coat - banks will lend to enable people to buy the garment they need.
I thought you guys might take an interest in a article that handles so many signs of our times in one place. :p
peace and blessings to all,
jahbless

There's a video just below the mortgages insanity that shows how cold it indeed is - hot water vaporising pretty quickly.
Or just a thermos lid full of dust thrown in the air. Either or! ;)

I think this cold weather snap, estimated here in the UK to last longer then 2 weeks. Will not only kill off a lot of the older folks like times before but now also younger ones as the financial situation for most people will not allow for exspensive fuel charges. I know of many locally young and old couples who have to regulate their times for heating to save money, some can only heat a few hours per day!!
This affects us all, including my family. Our compaicency nowadays has done us no favours although us Avalonians through kind information and hard research from others had a good idea this was on the cards to happen. With my central heating system taking about £1 per hour to heat my whole house and others stateing a simular figure, it is easy to see that many will opt for a cold house wearing extra garments in preference for extra food or just simply to pay regular bills.
Myself, I heat one room we all use during the day, heat the whole house for 3 hours per day (morning and night). If indeed we are soon to be thrown into an early sort of iceage then certainly, most will not cope as we are not ready for such a thing. Coldest record close to me is Wales at minus 18.5c. They are more accustomed to an anual cold snap, the rest of the uk are not.
We are not prepared to undergo such a change and sadly many will suffer from this. If it happens then I dearly hope it does slowly giving more people a chance to aclimatise and prepare.
Hope all this made sense as I just ranted on a little........
Blessings to you all

We have quite a number of slow moving pensioners in Canada who could show Bear Grylls a thing or two about survival...
