yes and yes.... how would it know if you signed up with an alias ? putin a location that is on the other side of the world from you....

unless you feel you are lying, and then just have no fear....

You might want to try downloading the Tor browser. It will keep your location safe. On the other hand - it has some difficulties because some software already expects to know your location - for example, when I use my bank wants to know why I am trying to access my account from Bangladesh and will not let me in until I have completed several security precautions and then I have to change my password.

I don't know what complexities you will run into with Tor.

Tor is Edward Snowden recommended.

Unless you use any kind of redirection/proxy server your true location can be estimated from the IP you're currently using.
That's working quite accurate.

If Microsoft has placed any advertisement in any web page that you had open in your browser during the time of your current internet connection, it also knews who you are. If your browser is storing cookies, it even can remember your identity from past sessions.

This does not mean, that the person on the other side knows your identity.

But Microsoft, Google and those advertisement networks most probably know who you are.

towards who to keep your location secret? Skype belongs to microsoft and they have exclusive backdoors for secret service usage so they see where u are but they don't see your name unless u use it or u use a email address which they already know because its part of their system aswell (yahoo,hotmail,gmail.....)

to stay secret these days only works with proxy usage and create a new email account every time they ask for it.

for directly won't help with Skype because Skype doesn't work like a website communication u will need a complete redirected network traffic that goes trough a proxy like vpn for example.

worth mentioning: I have seen some strange business with Skype .. ie. a private voice conversation between two people .. and magically a 3rd party has a recording of it .. one can debate the various technical ways in which this can be achieved.

ToR is basically a web browser that allows you to be anonymous. It wont work with Skype.

If you want something secure look at silent-circle (at a cost) or mega.nz

For email protonmail.com is very good.

tor will only work with basic browsing

if you login to any flash app the jig is up. youtube skype, all track your actual location.

so if you tell skype your from st louis thats fine and good but their records will indicate your actual ip (physical location)
