View Full Version : the AirForce program of Re-Entry Vehicles

Lockheed Martin (Martin Marietta has facilities in Waterton Canyon in the foothills southwest of Denver, Colorado) has been a major developer of "technology" for many space programs.
One of those being re-entry vehicles which could survive descent and not burn up.
(this is barring ALL the exotic technologies, but assuming that ONLY conventional drives, and re-entry methods would be available) - going off into exotic drives, space-warps, time travel/anti-gravity is not the subject of this thread but to look at some historical information.

Kecksburg, PA - strange object falls out of the sky, but makes several intelligent turns indicating something is navigating it.

Keywords - GE Mark II re-entry vehicle..
In the PDF here-in look midway for pictures of the Mark 2 and the Mark 12.. Assuming then the numbers were sequential, probably 4-11 were either failures or are so classified that pictures of them cannot be posted by the government contractor.. (Mk-3 will be shown below)
from this article:
http://www.post-gazette.com/news/science/2015/12/06/50-years-later-the-Kecksburg-Westmoreland-County-UFO-is-identified-probably/stories/201512060146
It was 4:47 p.m. when it came out of the sky from the northwest, a flaming object from over Canada, Ohio and into Western Pennsylvania. It appeared to be guided, changing its path and making a level descent away from residential areas and into the woods of Kecksburg.
The first people on the scene said it was partly buried in the ground. It was made of metal, between 10 and 12 feet long, and generally shaped like an acorn. There were strange markings on a band near the bottom that resembled hieroglyphics.
The military was on the remote scene within an hour and by 8 p.m., it was gone, hauled away on the back of an Army flatbed truck.
John Ventre, state director of the Mutual UFO Network, did not begin earnestly looking into the Kecksburg mystery until this year, he said, because so many others already were on the case. But Shafton native Owen Eichler, who had spent decades investigating it, came to him in February with a theory and some evidence that seemed to add up, and the two joined forces.
Their research — put forth in a report with the title “Has a Top 5 UFO Case Been Solved?” — suggests the vehicle was launched from Johnston Island in the Pacific two days earlier as part of America’s top-secret program for spying on the Soviet Union from space.
“Of course, no one ever wanted to admit we were spying on Russia,” Mr. Ventre said, offering an explanation as to why the object was taken away and never explained.
In the article it is discussed that it very well could be the GE Mark 2 re-entry vehicle which failed. The airforce was wanting a better way to spy on Soviet Union, and this craft was part of a satellite system to do just that.. The payload was brought back with a working nuclear power source, which launching nuclear device in space at that time was NOT talked about.
The secrecy to recover the powerpack radiation source, and the vehicle would have been necessary to cover-up the spying activity, and the use of nuclear devices in space.

The Mark 3 re-entry vehicle
First Reentry Vehicle Test with Complete Flight Control during Hypersonic Reentry.
Lockheed Martin and the Air Force modified MK3 reentry vehicles to investigate the use of aerodynamic control surfaces and onboard guidance and control subsystems. Three successful flight tests were conducted over the Pacific in the mid-1960s, demonstrating technologies useful for evading enemy missile defense systems.
The Mark 3 used the technique of the "heat shield", which was subsequently used in the Mercury, Gemini Manned spacecraft program, and the later Apollo re-entry vehicles.
Largest Operational Reentry Vehicle. The MK6 reentry vehicle for the Titan II, an ablative, sphere-cone design, weighed 8,000 pounds and was 14 feet long. Deployed in 1962, the MK6 remained on active duty until the mid-1980s.

MIRV's
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/W87_MIRV.jpg
Nuclear weapons in Space, or a way to have a "Multiple Independently Targeted Reentry Vehicle" go and seek out multiple targets.
In the earlier days, test launches of various configurations were performed.. Many UFO sightings happened, and in the OP, one author feels that a Re-Entry Vehicle from a military space program was the source of the Kecksburg sighting and crash, and recovery..
That program indeed was a "secret space program", predominantly for reconnaissance (spying), and deploying nuclear weapons in space..
With 'treaties' trying to be created for prevention and deployment of, "orbiting bombs in space" the "MIRV" program, we hear less and less in the public media on capable launch vehicles carrying payloads and tests.
The ability to launch multiple warheads on a vehicle was created so that more bang for the buck could be achieved, and with more MIRV's raining down, it would be harder to locate each one and take it out, high enough up before it could detonate and create an EMP.

Is the US the only MIRV developer, no..
FRANCE, CHINA, and RUSSIA have developed and deployed..
Here is a brief on the current FRENCH program, the Mark 51 device.
=================
The M51 SLBM is a submarine-launched ballistic missile, built by Airbus Defence & Space, and deployed with the French Navy. Designed to replace the M45 SLBM (In French terminology the MSBS - Mer-Sol-Balistique-Stratégique “Sea-ground-Strategic ballistic”), it was first deployed in 2010.
Each missile carries six to ten independently targetable TN 75 thermonuclear warheads.
The three-stage engine of the M51 is directly derived from the solid propellant boosters of Ariane 5.
The missiles are a compromise over the M5 SLBM design, which was to have a range of 11,000 km (6,800 mi) and carry 10 new generation Tête nucléaire océanique' (“Oceanic nuclear warhead”) MIRVs.
Design work on the M5 started in 1992, before the programme was renamed the M51 in 1996, when development costs decreased by 20 percent.
The M51 entered service in 2010.
Development
After having spent €5 billion ($6.7 billion) developing the missile, the French government placed a €3 billion ($3.9 billion) order with EADS SPACE Transportation for the M51 in December 2004.
The contract covered serial production of the M51 for 10 years, with the company to be responsible for sustained readiness support throughout the missile's life.
The M51 performed its first flight test (unarmed) on 9 November 2006 from the French missile flight test centre in Biscarrosse (Landes). The target was reached twenty minutes later, in the north-west of the Atlantic Ocean.
A second and third successful test were carried out on 21 June 2007 and 13 November 2008.
On 27 January 2010, at 9h25, a missile was launched underwater by Le Terrible, from Audierne Bay.
The missile reached its target 2,000 kilometres off South Carolina; the 4,500 kilometre flight took less than 20 minutes.
The 10 July 2010 test validated the Triomphant class submarine's capacity to launch the M51 in operational conditions.
On 5 May 2013, an M51 flight test missile failed after being fired by a submerged SSBN off the coast of Brittany. This was the first failed launch of the M51 after 5 successful launches since 2006.
On 30 September 2015, a M51 was successfully test-flown from a land-based missile site near Biscarrosse to a desolate target in the North Atlantic.

The FOCUS when one looks around and inventories, has been in DISARMING, crippling the US military first strike force, but seems folks are ignoring the REST of the world who is quite active in death from the skies weapons deployment and development..
When we are calling for GUN CONTROL of citizens, maybe one should consider GUN (NUCLEAR weapons) control of nations hell bent on maintaining a edge on actual terror against all other Governments..

Hi Bob, great thread. A few years back the show fact or faked went to a mountain top near area 51 and while filming the runway lights came on and a very fast moving object headed down towards the runway. That video IMO was proof of newer technological re-entry vehicles.

A satellite that can be steered to any location to monitor what's going on down on the ground requires a consumable.. A project such as the Space Shuttle could be used to go to precision spy satellites being KEPT in orbit, too costly to let fail, due to lack of fuel and refuel them.. Is there a secret military space program still doing that?
Some of the US secret space program's most closely guarded assets were known as:

the KH-8 GAMBIT 3 and the
KH-9 HEXAGON spy satellites.
Before the first HEXAGON spy satellite systems ever launched, the NRO's GAMBIT series of reconnaissance craft flew several space missions aimed at providing surveillance over specific targets around the world.
The satellite program's initial system, GAMBIT 1, first launched in 1963 carrying a KH-7 camera system that included a "77-inch focal length camera for providing specific information on scientific and technical capabilities that threatened the nation," according to an NRO description. A second GAMBIT satellite system, which first launched aboard GAMBIT 3 in 1966, included a175-inch focal length camera.

In the article it is discussed that it very well could be the GE Mark 2 re-entry vehicle which failed.
David Steitz (http://www.nasa.gov/offices/oct/multimedia/images/industry_07_13_2010_2.html), the NASA spokesperson who issued the surprising statement in 2005 that NASA had indeed examined debris related to Kecksburg, supposedly from a Russian space probe:
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/479949main_steitz_226.jpg
As a rule, we don't track UFOs. What we could do, and what we apparently did as experts in spacecraft in the 1960s, was to take a look at whatever it was and give our expert opinion. We did that, we boxed [the case] up and that was the end of it. Unfortunately, the documents supporting those findings were misplaced. (source (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kecksburg_UFO_incident#2005:_NASA_changes_story_to_.22Russian_satellite.22))
David Steitz told The Associated Press for a 40th anniversary story that the object appeared to be a Russian satellite that re-entered the atmosphere and broke up. NASA experts studied fragments from the object, but records of what they found were lost in the 1990s, Steitz said in 2005.

Very interesting thread! BTW I am always astonished at how primitive the combustion engine seems. . . quite violent, not following Tao effortlessly.
Off topic: An ex of mine tried to develop a triangular engine to "outwankel the Wankel engine" as he put it, but there were still the "Dreikugelwirbelwannenbrennraum" (love that word!!) sealing problems. PS He was German, in case you hadn't guessed  haha! The reception he got from the big manufacturers he took it to was not a welcoming one, it would have saved a huge amount of fuel (carbon based)

Back in 06 that exact yellow craft hovered silently over my next door neighbors and my back yard for over five minutes. I wrote about it in my journal as being totally non aerodynamic in appearance and looked much like a yellow submarine. Windows and all. So, satellite my eye. Shocking to see a photograph of it. Here. I had gone inside to get my camera, when I returned, it was gone. This was mid day on a Saturday. It was barely 500 feet off the ground if that, probably more like 200 feet.

The re-entry vehicles is the subject of the thread. :)
@Sunny-side-up
In the ARTIST'S RENDITION drawing above for the KH-9 Hexagon, the subject of the "contention", the ACCESS PORTS to the compartments which house the re-entry vehicles are pencil'd in with the covers CLOSED.
In the Schematic shown below of the KH-9 Hexagon, the access panels are shown again, but a little harder to see.
I do not believe that in there is any sort of hovering KH-9 Hexagon satellite, and it is clear in the schematic, that access ports are what the so called "windows" are.
Typically in a MUSEUM, ANY open holes will be covered with plastic or something so that people don't toss garbage into the openings. It's clear to me also looking at the Lockheed Martin assembly area image, the access ports are covered for delivery into space. One would have the access ports made visible so that people in the MUSEUM could look inside the exhibit.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/systems/images/kh-9b_hexagon_big_bird.gif
This is the assembly image at Lockheed - the "access ports" are covered for space deployment. ONLY in the MUSEUM would the exhibit have a way to look inside and see some of the interesting mechanism of the re-entry modules. 4 of then were used in the Hexagon spy satellite.

Do you know of anyone who would be in the same altitude as the Hubble to take pictures? The earliest time that happened was when a corrective optics had to be added.. http://cc.amazingcounters.com/counter.php?i=3190880&c=9572953
The optics were corrected to their intended quality by a servicing mission in 1993. So any other mission to Hubble was to deal with upgrading electronics, assorted packages, and so forth.. The thread really shouldn't go off on discussing Hubble, as that really has nothing to do with the RE-ENTRY vehicles as deployed and maintained by the air force..
===============
Four subsequent Space Shuttle missions repaired, upgraded, and replaced systems on the telescope. A fifth mission was canceled on safety grounds following the Columbia disaster. However, after spirited public discussion, NASA administrator Mike Griffin approved one final servicing mission, completed in 2009. The telescope is still operating as of 2015, and may last until 2030–2040. Those interested can look at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Space_Telescope
There are notes that that "anyone can apply for time on the telescope, public included".. as to the cost?? so there is an open policy on the data apparently. :focus:

No sound, complete silence and it was very close. I was out raking leaves, my neighbors were not home at the time. And it was hovering, then moved super slow. It was a cloudless sky, and I had gone inside for literally no more than 30 -45 seconds as my digital camera was on my desk just inside the door. When I came back it was gone, and nowhere to be seen within my view, no highrises or any buildings of that nature. To note, I had experienced many instances of other high strangeness during that period, night time sightings and some other stuff. And yes, why put windows in an unmanned satellite????

So the bottom image relate directly to the OP as it must have a Re-Entry capsule.
How many other man-able things floating, moving around up there ?
Good OP Bob lots of info to look through :)
I've replied on your new thread, discussing possibilities. The Hexagon series was not about sustaining humans, the "windows" are ONLY there in the museum to keep people from tossing their junk into the vehicle. The re-entry vehicles were only large enough to take FILM back to earth, and did not have life support for humans.
As to images of something that looked like Hexagon floating before Sydney, that I answered in your new thread too.. Great spot over there in that thread to continue that discussion.
This thread is about the re-entry vehicles that were started by the US AF..
