I think this information could prove very valuable to anybody pursuing cold fusion and anti-gravity technologies. This impedance/resonance effect seems to pop-up in all the works involving really cheap clean energy. I strongly recommend that you watch all the videos in the series. They are very informative indeed. I got a lot of "aha"s regarding problems in physics that have been poorly explained in school or skipped over with: "that's just the way things are... memorize it... and get over it!"

I do hope this information reaches someone that is able to get some palladium and build a working cold fusion cell :)

What is the Energy Catalyzer?
It is a "Cold Fusion" device developed by Italian engineer and inventor Andrea Rossi. It produces heat by placing nickel powder of very small particle size (nano-meters to micro-meters) in a pressurized hydrogen environment along with currently undisclosed (for proprietary reasons) catalysts that enhance the reaction. When this environment is heated to approximately 450 - 500 C, a nuclear reaction starts taking place. This reaction releases a large amount of energy while consuming very little hydrogen and nickel powder.

Who is Andrea Rossi?
He is an Italian engineer and inventor who has been working on energy related projects for decades. Currently, he is the President and Founder of Leonardo Technologies Incorporated of Bedford , NH .

What is Cold Fusion?
It is a term that describes a broad range of nuclear reactions – including nuclear fusion – at relatively low temperatures. For example, hundreds of degrees instead of millions of degrees like inside of a star such as our sun.

How much energy does this system produce?
There is currently only one model of reactor that has been disclosed. It is designed to produce 10 kW of continuous thermal energy in the form of heated water or steam. However, this is not the upper limit of the energy the system can produce. It can be throttled up to 130 kW or higher, but that is avoided except during experimentation for safety reasons.

How large is the system?
The reactor vessel itself is very small with a volume of only one liter. The auxiliary equipment such as control mechanisms, lead shielding, hydrogen canister, and other components can easily fit on a medium sized table top.

How much fuel does the Energy Catalyzer consume?
Very little. One hundred grams of nickel powder will power the device for six months. However, since only a small amount of that nickel will have reacted with the hydrogen 90% of the nickel will remain. It can be extracted, re-processed, and re-used as fuel.

What isotopes of nickel are consumed?
The nickel powder put into the device is not of any specific isotope. It is just common ordinary nickel of a very small particle size. However, is thought that only two isotopes of nickel (62Ni and 64Ni) are being consumed.

What type of hydrogen is consumed?
Only light hydrogen is used. Heavy hydrogen (deuterium) does not work.

Are byproducts being created?
The two isotopes 62Ni and 64Ni are apparently being transmuted into non-radioactive isotopes of copper and trace amounts of other stable and non radioactive elements such as zinc.

What is the catalyst and why has it not been disclosed?
Only Andrea Rossi and a few close business partners know the identity of the proprietary catalyst. The catalyst is critical intellectual property, as it is the key to producing significant quantites of energy. A patent application has been submitted covering the catalyst(s) involved. It has been stated that when the patent application is granted and a full patent is issued, the information about the catalyst or catalysts will be revealed.

When will the patent be granted?
It is hoped the patent will be granted by the time the one megawatt plant opens this October. However, there is a standing policy at the US Patent Office not to grant patents to "cold fusion" devices. If the patent office does not approve it by then, the information about the catalyst will have to remain secret. Please do not hound or contact the patent office about this issue. The best way to proceed is to get as many people as possible interested in this technology. Millions of people openly discussing why the patent office is not granting a patent to a valid technology being put to industrial use may make it difficult for them to justify their actions.

Do we know anything about the catalyst at all?
All we know from Andrea Rossi's comments is that it is not a precious metal, is not radioactive, and is claimed to be ubiquitous and very inexpensive.

Does this system produce any radioactivity?
Yes, but it is all contained inside of the reactor vessel which is shielded by two centimeters of lead. However, the radiation serves a very important purpose. It interacts with the materials that compose the reactor (steel, lead, and boron) to generate heat that warms water, boils water, or turns water into steam.

Does this system produce any radioactive waste?
No radioactive materials are put into the reactor vessel. In addition, only hours after the system is turned off the reactor can be opened and no radiation can be detected. Unlike traditional nuclear power, no uranium, plutonium, or other radioactive elements are ever input into the system; and no radioactive waste is produced.

How is the device activated?
To start up the device, current passes through a series of resistors that produce heat inside of the reactor. The input power via the resistors is approximately 1000 watts. After reaching a temperature of around 450 to 500 Celsius, the reaction starts up. Once the reaction has started the input is lowered to around 80 watts.

What would happen in a catastrophe?
If a catastrophe struck, the reactor may break, and the contents may spill, but since a reduction of hydrogen pressure would immediately cease the reaction, the device would turn off immediately. Also, since there is no radioactive elements put into the device and no nuclear waste produced in the device, no radioactive materials would be put into the environment.

Can the device self sustain without an input?
Yes. This mode of operation has been achieved many times for a period of several hours during experimentation. However, to achieve a self sustaining mode of operation, the nuclear reactions must be allowed to become very energetic, and the output becomes so high that explosions are possible. During ordinary use the system will be utilizing only a fraction of the output possible when in a self sustaining mode.

How do you turn off the Energy Catalyzer?
The device can be deactivated by turning off the resistors and reducing the hydrogen pressure or venting hydrogen from the system. If this does not totally quench the reaction, the water flow around the reactor can be increased. This can cool the contents below the temperature required for the reactions to take place.

Can this device produce electricity?
This device does not directly produce electricity. However, it can produce high temperature steam that can power turbines or other types of steam powered generators to produce electricity. Due to the low fuel cost of the Energy Catalyzer, electricity produced utilizing such a method should be very cheap.

Did I read that a one megawatt plant is being built?
Yes, a one megawatt plant will be opening during the second half of October in Xanthi , Greece . This plant will utilize one hundred and twenty five 10 kW modules linked together to produce one megawatt of output.

What will the output of this one megawatt plant be used for?
The one megawatt of energy produced will be used to power a factory that will manufacture 300,000 ten kilowatt Energy Catalyzer modules a year. It is unknown if the output will only be used to produce heat for the factory or if they plan to connect the output to a generator to provide for the electrical needs of the factory.

What companies are involved in this technology?
We only know of two main players at this time. The first is Leonardo Technologies Incorporated of Bedford , NH and Defkalion Green Technologies that is based in Athens , Greece . Defkalion is the company that will be managing the first one megawatt plant and has rights to the technology in all areas of the world except the United States.

Who is currently testing this technology?
A one year research program at the University of Bologna in Italy has recently started. This research program will test and study the technology in order to learn more about the exact phenomena taking place in the reactor. They will be performing many tests on the device including extended runs of several month duration in which the device will be constantly operating.

What proof do we have this technology works as claimed?
Andrea Rossi has used one of these devices to continually heat one of his factories for two years. In addition, recent publicized tests performed by third party scientists at the University of Bologna have verified that the output is far beyond any chemical reaction possible, that there are no hidden external sources of energy feeding the reactor, and that the output far exceeds the energy input. In one test, the device self sustained with no input for a period of time before the short experiment was ended. Another experiment allowed the reactor to run for 18 hours producing a constant average output of 15 kW utilizing only an average of 80 watts of input. Successful tests such as these have impressed scientists and have inspired the one year research program at the University of Bologna .

How "green" or ecologically friendly is this technology?
This technology is completely ecologically friendly or "green" in that it does not utilize any radioactive elements, does not produce any radioactive waste, and does not emit greenhouse gases or particulate matter that can cause breathing problems. Using the E-Cat to produce energy would be greener than burning fossil fuels to produce energy (oil, gas, or coal) and would be much greener than conventional nuclear power which is tremendously ecologically damaging. In addition, since so little nickel is needed and it is so common in the Earth's crust, there would be no need for drilling projects (like with oil and gas) that can harm the environment; and there would be no need for massive mining operations (like with coal).

How fuel efficient is the E-Cat?
It is very fuel efficient. One hundred grams of nickel and very little hydrogen can power a 10 kW reactor for six months. After six months, the remaining fuel can be extracted and 90% of the nickel can be recycled, reprocessed, and used again as fuel.
One gram of nickel can produce as much energy as 500 barrels of oil!

How does this technology compare to solar, wind, hydro-electric, geothermal, and other green technologies?
This technology may be more advantageous than any of those alternative energy sources. First of all, unlike hydro-electric or geothermal power, future variations of the E-Cat could be portable and used to power vehicles such as cars, boats, and airplanes. Also, even though wind and solar power can be used to power certain specialized vehicles, they cannot provide an energy source capable of powering a full sized ordinary vehicle.
Secondly, the power density of the E-Cat technology is much higher than these alternative energy sources. A reactor with one liter of volume can output at a minimum 10 kW of thermal power. This is a very low figure, and future enhancements of the system could allow for the full potential output of the system (130 kW and beyond) to be produced without safety risks.
Third, the E-Cat is simple to produce. It is made out of common components and materials. For example, solar cells can be complicated to manufacture and can require exotic materials. The E-Cat reactor vessel is composed of steel, lead, and boron.

Why was this technology not developed decades ago?
Thousands of successful cold fusion experiments have been performed around the world by hundreds of scientists over the last twenty years or so. When can I buy a unit for my home, and how much will one cost?
Defkalion Green Technologies is planning on opening a factory in October that will produce 300,000 units a year that will be sold in the Greek and Baltic markets. Other factories will most likely be opening in other parts of the world. Defkalion estimates that a reactor for your home would cost approximately 3500 Euros and the generator to convert the heat to electricity would cost an additional 1500 Euros. Absolutely. depending on your energy use. By selling the electricity you do not use back to the electric company, you could pay off your system more rapidly. Mother Of All E-Cat Tests Ushers World Into Nickel Age
Since the E-Cat saga began, Andrea Rossi has been continually answering people’s questions. On his Journal of Nuclear Physics site, via emails sent to him, and during interviews he responds to question after question from countless individuals. I find it very difficult to remember a time when he has not responded to my questions, even if there are certain topics he cannot address. He must be careful not to give too much critical information away in order to prevent very real competitors from using the information to figure out the technology, and try to claim it as their own.

Despite the fact he cannot tell us every little detail of how the technology works, we should be very thankful he is so communicative. Not all exotic energy inventors are so willing to engage with the public. Recently, Frank Acland and myself composed an email for Rossi, asking many different questions about the E-Cat technology. As usual, he responded promptly (the next morning) and provided all the answers he could. Some of the answers were short, but we also obtained some interesting bits of information. (Questions are listed below this article)

The most important bits of information are about the extended test of the new high temperature E-Cat.

600 Degrees C

Andrea Rossi stated in the email that the new high temperature E-Cat — that can produce 600 degree steam with a COP of 6 — has been operating continuously for 40 days. That’s right, 40 days! Forty!

Forget 18 hour tests like the one Dr. Levi performed in 2011. This test has lasted so far for 960 (nine hundred and sixty) hours, and is planned to last at least 90 days. The E-Cat has been operating non-stop producing 600 degree steam. This is big news. It should be on the front page of every newspaper in the nation, and being discussed on every news network. It means that the solution to the energy crisis is here. There is no further need for ridiculous carbon trading schemes that destroy jobs, no more need to fund hot fusion research (that has never obtained even a COP of 1.1 with billions of dollars in funding), and no need to put millions of dollars into conventional alternative energy technologies. Wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and other energy technologies are about to be obsolete. Fossil fuels are going to be considered worse than obsolete. They will belong in the fossil fuel age, not the nickel age.

With 600C steam high efficiency turbines, Stirling engines, and even thermalphotovoltaic systems can be used to produce electricity from E-Cats. Basically, the E-Cat is now capable of powering our world. It can do so without producing pollution, without producing nuclear waste, and without emitting radiation into the environment.

The technology also offers dirt cheap energy. Can you think of any other power source that could consume only 1.5 grams of a cheap substance, probably less hydrogen, and produce 10 kilowatts of output for 40 days non-stop?

Basically, with the E-Cat technology the fuel cost is a non-issue. The fuel to power your home for a year could cost less than a value meal at a fast food restaurant.

New E-Cat Details

This test is being conducted with a new model of E-Cat. The test is using a single module that contains a single reactor core. The reactor core is rated to have an output of 10 kilowatts, and a maximum safe output of 20 kilowatts. We have previously been told this reactor core is smaller than the previous version, but uses more shielding. Instead of many grams of nickel, it only uses 1.5 grams. Instead of a hydrogen canister, a small tablet is placed into the reactor that absorbs and releases hydrogen depending on the temperature.

Interestingly, atomic hydrogen is being produced both by “catalysts” (one or more chemical elements placed into the reactor core in addition to nickel and hydrogen) and by another method. Perhaps by being able to carefully control how much atomic hydrogen is generated the system can remain more stable. Perhaps this is what allows for 600C steam in a stable manner?

Like previous E-Cats, a drive has to be applied approximately half the time to keep the reactions stable. If the drive is not applied the reactor can run away, the reactor core can get too hot, the nickel can melt, and the nuclear reactions will cease. Also, a radio frequency generator is used as in previous E-Cats. Finally, it has been confirmed that copper is still the main transmutation product.

However, there are many aspects we do not understand about the new E-Cat. Rossi has claimed there have been many changes both to the design and the theory. Hopefully, in time we will learn more about these changes.

Upcoming Test Data

In a matter of weeks test data from this extended E-Cat test should be posted. In a matter of weeks the test will not be complete, but hopefully we will get test data from at least part of the test. Perhaps several days or weeks.

This test data should hopefully put to doubt any doubt in the minds of any reasonable person that the E-Cat technology works as claimed. The tests in 2011 actually proved that the technology works, but these tests should prove that the reactor is now totally STABLE at high temperatures, and can produce 600C steam temperatures over long periods of time — actually, FOREVER! (Ok, maybe the E-Cat cannot work forever. Eventually, after years of use it will need to be re-fueled, after a decade or so a part may need to be replaced, or perhaps the super high steam temperatures might do something to the metal. However, these tests indicate an E-Cat can produce high temperature steam and remain stable for a very long period of time).

E-Cat Fever is Only Starting

The E-CAT fever started with a temperature of around 100C in the year 2011. Now it has reached 600C and has been burning non-stop for 40 days. Very soon the mainstream media will be forced to take notice of this fever. When that happens, they need to give recognition to the REAL media outlets like E-CATWORLD that covered this technology when they would not! They will be forced to admit their skepticism, cynism, and ignorance allowed the alternative media to be the ones not only to break this story, but also to keep reporting about it.

While the mainstream media sleeps, the E-Cat fever will continue to spread.

9) You have stated that the high temp E-Cat module self sustains approximately half of the time, and then a “drive” is applied the other half of the time. From what we have been able to gather in the past this drive is applied to stop the nuclear reactions from becoming too energetic and “running away” which could lead to the melting of the nickel powder. Is the idea of the drive being applied to stop a thermal run away still correct? If not, can you provide some explanation of why the drive is activated? Obviously, you must be careful not to give away information that could be used inappropriately by the very real competitors and “snakes” out there. But could you perhaps provide a few examples of how the technology has changed, even if you have to remain vague about the details? For example….

Sometimes I wish the economy would fail so the control mechanism that suppresses all these great inventors would be so distracted that maybe just maybe I could see these free energys active in my lifetime .

Thanks for the compliment. I think Frank's theories are useful to think about. By far the most important aspect of his theory is the relevance of his "Dimensional Frequency". I can't say whether it initiates quantum transition and/or misalignment of the strong force, etc. What I can say is that in other LENR systems, such as Brillouin (with their Q-Pulse), and Energetics (with their SuperWave), there has been other demonstrations of the importance of stimulating a system with the right kind of current. So why this is happening is not 100% clear, but its clearly accelerating the reaction. In my opinion I don't think it creates the reaction, there have been demonstrations of LENR effects without any input power (see most recently Cravens at NI Week for example), but I think if we're trying to progress to controllable reactions it is a critical piece of the puzzle.

As far as anti-gravity goes, I'm not sure what to think about it. Similar to LENR, it might act as a catalyst, but I've seen equally coherent explanations for what causes the propulsion in the first place. Only time will tell.

Recent news about fusion. They have successfully gotten more energy out of the process than what is put in. Although this use of lazers may not be the ultimate way to achieve the ignition, it may provide more information on what is needed. Understanding is the first step towards a solution.

Humans have gotten pretty good at nuclear fission. But fusion, bringing two atomic nuclei together, has been much more tricky—at least for peaceful purposes. But In a new study out today in Nature, physicists from the National Ignition Facility report clearing a major hurdle toward harnessing the power of stars.

"For the first time anywhere, we've gotten more energy out of this fuel than was put into the fuel. That's a major turning point," said Omar Hurricane, lead author of the new paper and a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. To be clear, the NIF has not achieved its namesake goal of igniting a sustained fusion reaction. But these indications of a process called bootstrapping—in which particles created by the reaction feed energy back into the reaction—are a major step along the way.

Bootstrapping

Fusion reactions in the lab can work in a few ways, and the NIF uses a process called inertial confinement, which heats up fuel pellets made of deuterium-tritium until they implode and the fuel fuses. The reactions produce two particles, a neutron and an alpha particle. Alpha particles, which are helium nuclei, are the important ones: They must continue heating the fuel to keep more reactions coming as part of a process called alpha particle bootstrapping. In the NIF experimental "shots" reported today, this started to happen, Hurricane says.

Although this is a major milestone, it's hard to say whether or when this approach will lead to fusion as an energy source. Hurricane compared it to climbing an unfamiliar mountain whose summit is hidden in clouds. In Hurricane's metaphor, his team is at base camp right now, where they've found a safe and effective way forward.

"You can't see it. You don't have a map. You don't know what the terrain is … And someone calls you on your satellite phone and asks you, ‘How long is it going to take you to climb the mountain?'" he says. "You don't know. You look down at your feet, you see what the terrain is, you try to choose the best path based on what you see. That's what we hear when someone says, ‘How long is it going to take before you guys get to ignition?' It's anyone's guess."

Fusion Basics

The NIF works by directing 192 ultraviolet laser beams inside a tiny gold canister called a hohlraum (which sounds exotic but is just German for "hollow space.") It's about the size of a pencil eraser and holds a 2-millimeter plastic sphere. That sphere is coated with a thin layer of cryogenically frozen deuterium-tritium—the components of heavy water, essentially, in which the hydrogen atom in H2O has one or two extra neutrons. This DT ice is the fuel for fusion experiments.

The lasers bombard the walls of the hohlraum with 1.8 megajoules of energy, and the hohlraum heats up so much that it starts to emit X-rays. The X-rays rip apart the atomic structure of the plastic shell and implode it—"like a rocket driving the sphere inward," as Hurricane puts it. The fuel moves inward, too, and runs into itself, experiencing ferocious pressures, on the order of 150 billion atmospheres. That is 2.5 times the density at the center of the sun.

As atomic nuclei begin to fuse, the resulting alpha particles carry about 20 percent of the reaction's energy in the form of kinetic energy. This means they can escape. However, in the team's experiments this fall, some particles instead deposited their energy back into the fusion fuel. If more hot alpha particles drive more energy back into the fuel, this causes more nuclei to fuse together and ignite a runaway reaction.

Throughout this process, the fuel-holding sphere is compressed about 35 times, according to Debbie Callahan, a physicist at NIF. "If you started with a basketball, that would be like compressing it down to a pea," she says. And this has to happen completely symmetrically for the reaction to work. That is very hard to do, and previous experiments weren't as successful. The compression was unstable, and instead of reaching uniformly high pressures, the implosion tore itself apart.

This time, the physicists controlled the lasers in a different way, front-loading their collective energy towards the beginning of the 150-picosecond pulse. This is called a high-foot pulse. "In a way, we took a step back from what was being tried before, and it's given us a leap forward in what we've been able to accomplish," Hurricane says.

Doubts

The results may be impressive, but according to Mark Herrmann, a physicist at Sandia National Laboratories who was not involved in this paper, by choosing this path to heat the fuel, the team won't be able to achieve ignition with these implosions. The fuel gain seen via the alpha particles is still less than the energy the researchers put into the process by a factor of 100, he says. The hohlraum absorbs some of the energy to cause the implosion, and the implosion deposits only a fraction of the energy into the fuel. So the biggest fusion yield was just 17 kilojoules, a far cry from the 1.8 mJ input.

"How far the high-foot implosions can be pushed remains an open question," Herrmann wrote in a commentary accompanying Hurricane's paper.

Hurricane acknowledged there's a tradeoff between energy input and high pressures. Even then, they have a long way to go: Bootstrapping is starting around 150 gigabars of pressure, but physicist and coauthor Tammy Ma said they might need to hit 300 gigabars, or 300 billion times the pressure at sea level, to ignite fusion.

The NIF team could use several tricks to improve the output. They're considering other ways of mediating the high-foot laser pulse and trying different capsule materials that might be easier to compress than plastic. They are also considering other hohlraum shapes. Since the September and November shots covered in this study, the NIF team has performed several other promising experiments and made more progress, Ma says.

The ultimate goal, Hurricane says, is a safe method of harnessing the furnace that powers the stars.

"Fusion is probably one of the most promising energy technologies that we could possibly develop. The resource, if we get it to work, is this deuterium we find in seawater—and that's essentially limitless, or more so than pretty much any other resource," he says. "And we're all scientists, and it's a very interesting puzzle to try to make this happen."

I feel it's very interesting to point out that deuterium fusion is focused on in the mainstream because of neutron outputs and the particular military applications associated. If it wasn't for that aspect, thorium fission would be far more interesting than uranium fission both in terms of reactor operational safety as well as waste disposal issues. Just to put that in perspective, there was a thorium fission reactor experiment run by a few scientists in the US and when it was time for the crew to go home at the end of the day, they would shut the reactor down (daily), go home, sleep, and restart it in the morning when they came back to work. That, in perspective of the Japanese nuclear disaster, is priceless.

That said, the most interesting fusion reaction for domestic energy objectives is the pB11 reaction. The Hydrogen Boron fusion reaction gives off only charged particles. No neutrons or dangerous electromagnetic radiation. If someone where compelled to perfect a fusion reaction for electrical energy, this is the holy grail of fusion.

Mainstream focus on deuterium fusion as well as uranium fission is only because of military related benefits associated with the emission of the neutron and aspects of the the application of the related technologies.
