This appears to have first been uploaded on 4/1/2016 and is being reported (http://www.news.com.au/technology/science/space/was-this-ball-of-light-over-canberra-a-ufo/news-story/cf4cf198c09ecac93a0294f5bac89e51) as likely to be ball lightning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_lightning), which is considered to be an atmospheric phenomenon associated with electrical storms. The authenticity of the footage is not being contested, only the nature of the light. I'm not so sure it's ball lightning, ball lightning typically moves around, while this is stationary.

Any thoughts?

Johnson Thompson channel created this hoax video. He put a link up entitled how I created a hoax. I would have provided a link but can't from this tablet.

Below is what the creator, Johnson Thompson, added in the summary:

Unfortunately this video is not real. Here's a video on how i made it:

Those that uploaded the video to their sites and blogs and didn’t bother to check the summary do damage to the truth. Even if the summary was blank, that should’ve been a red flag.

Hmm, I doubt there was any clue that it was a hoax in his summary when it went viral, the link in the original video is for the second video, which wasn't uploaded until the 8th. Add to that his misleading title and I don't think he's in any position to be commenting on others' actions, even if the summary was blank.

Speaking of others' actions, The Canberra Times published the following article two hours before I started this thread, I saw no denial of its authenticity in the news report but should have done a hoax search, apologies.

The person who uploaded footage of "strange lights" over the Canberra sky that fooled even astronomers and meteorologists has admitted the video was fake and apologised for unintentionally wasting viewers' time.
The video, posted to Reddit and YouTube on January 3, showed an aurora-like colouring in the sky and a donut-shaped flash of light, which experts thought might have been the rare phenomenon of "ball lightning".
But the uploader, Johnson Thompson, appears to have had a change of heart after the clip unexpectedly went viral, garnering more than 300,000 views on YouTube and extensive media coverage, posting a second video on Friday explaining how they'd "accidentally created" the hoax with Adobe After Effects.

"I didn't intend for it to be taken seriously, but I made an error in judgement and titled the video as if it was real," the uploader said in a post on Reddit.
"The worst thing to come out of this is that I caused Canberra astronomer, Dr Brad Tucker and senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Sean Carson to take time out of their day to talk about the video.
"I'm extremely sorry for that. I messed up bad."
Thompson said the attention the video attracted had been unexpected and didn't think the special effects, a result of experimenting with the newly-purchased software, were convincing.
"I hadn't heard of ball lightening prior to making this video," the second video said.
"At most I hoped it would get a few laughs and/or critiques on the Canberra subreddit.
"Nothing interesting ever happens in Canberra, ever."
Thompson has since added the words "unfortunately this video is not real" to the YouTube clip.

In case clarification is needed, I didn't mean to imply that you 'should have' checked the summary. http://avalonlibrary.net/paula/Recovered/smileys-hugs-765537_zpso1eaenyy.gif

My comments go to the news organizations that spread non-truth out of sheer laziness to fact check or to increase viewership. To my way of thinking, folks would add a description in the YouTube summary to an extraordinary find; partly for clarification and partly because of such a cool discovery. He didn't and I assume added it later for clarification.

Not at all RunningDeer, I understood your intent. <3

The irony is that I posted the video (not his channel but saw Daily Mail Online in title and description) and didn't check for hoaxes because I thought that if there was any trace of it being a hoax they'd (MSM) be all over it from the start. I hadn't come across an "accidental hoax" before (hence in this case he came out and said it was a hoax himself), now I know, hoax check under all circumstances.
