Two USA Navy boats detained by Iran in Persian Gulf

The crews of two small Navy craft were detained Tuesday by Iran, but American officials received assurances from Tehran the vessels and crew would be quickly returned.

The boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.

“We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly,” Cook said.

U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island, situated in the middle of the Persian Gulf.

One of the boats had mechanical trouble causing both ships to run aground, officials said.


The 10 troops were then picked up by Iran.

Secretary of State Kerry himself called Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif regarding the incident.

Kerry “personally engaged with Zarif on this issue to try to get to this outcome,” the official said.

Kerry forged a close relationship with the diplomat through years of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

What I understood is , Americans salvaged an old ship(!) from bottom of the sea and when they try to tow it , they had an unknown mechanical problem and drifted away to the Iranian cost.

However it could also be coincidence (the Navy helped tow the antique and sent their worst 'not fit for battle' ship which broke down). I do like to keep an edge of skepticism myself... for my bit, I think that Iran keeps a sharp eye on it's borders and there were more then a few "messages" passed back and forth on both sides... a tiny embarrassment for "Hollywood USA" and an opportunity for Iran to show graciousness and diplomacy after a post Nuclear 5+1 agreement... it is curious what the US was doing in those parts... I had been thinking that it was a provocative action to make Obama look bad on the evening of his final SOTU address, I mean, the timing...then there were those rumors of a rift between the WH and Pentagon and Military...

Anyway, conservatives were going bananas at the opportunity to make Obama and the U.S. look weak by spinning the story Right. Iranians "seized our sailors", that kind of thing.

Initial Pentagon reports said the soldiers on the two boats were doing training exercises when one of the boats had mechanical trouble and accidently drifted into waters "claimed" by Iran. So, 1.6 trillion spent on defense yet the GPS, anchor and radios fail after some military moron decided it'd be a good idea to hold training exercises at the edge of Iranian waters at a time when there's so much tension in the air? I don't think so.

Sounds like they wanted our take to be "despite being seized by those Barbarians..." when perhaps "despite the fact that after our incredibly irresponsible Navy held "exercises" ridiculously close to Iranian waters, then losing an engine and forgetting altogether how to drinkable to prevent drifting...they were rescued by the Iranian Coast Guard" was closer to the truth. Or maybe neither...just another anomalous event to keep our eyes on everything but the ball.

ISIS Issues Fatwa Calling For Mass Killing Of American Dogs And Puppies

A chilling report issued by the Main Intelligence Directorate General Staff of the Armed Forces (GRU) is warning today that the pet dogs and puppies of American owners have now become “targets for death” after the Islamic State’s (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) top religious scholar, Turki al-Bin‘ali, issued a fatwa authorizing the immediate mass slaughter of these beloved animals by their terrorist supporters currently residing in the United States.
