Alan Rickman dies - he was age 69

Alan Rickman, one of the best-loved and most warmly admired British actors of the past 30 years, has died in London aged 69

Partial list of roles : Rickman found a fresh legion of fans with his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films. But the actor had been a big-screen staple since first shooting to global acclaim in 1988, when he starred as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis’s sardonic, dastardly adversary in Die Hard – a part he was offered two days after arriving in Los Angeles, aged 41.

Gruber was the first of three memorable baddies played by Rickman: he was an outrageous sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as a terrifying Rasputin in an acclaimed 1995 HBO film.

But Rickman was also a singular leading man: in 1991, he starred as a cellist opposite Juliet Stevenson in Anthony Minghella’s affecting supernatural romance Truly, Madly, Deeply; four years later he was the honourable and modest Col Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, starring and scripted by Emma Thompson. He was to reunite with Thompson many times: they played husband and wife in 2003’s Love, Actually and former lovers in 2010 BBC drama The Song of Lunch. He also played Éamon de Valera in the 1996 historical biopic of the Irish civil war Michael Collins.

He spoofed his own persona in comedy Galaxy Quest (2000), in which he plays a Shakespearian-trained actor who has found fame as a Spock-style alien in a long-running sci-fi series and in Victoria Wood’s Christmas special of the same year, as an upright colonel at the Battle of Waterloo.

Rickman was sanguine about his legions of admirers, who declared their love on countless websites, video tributes and at stage doors. Even scientists were not immune: in 2008, linguistics professors concluded that the most appealing male voice mixes elements of Rickman, Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon.

Recent film roles included an art-loving lord in the Coen brothers’ scripted farce Gambit (2012), as Ronald Reagan in Lee Daniels’s The Butler – and a humorous, imperious King Louis XIV in A Little Chaos.

Rickman is still to be seen in Eye in the Sky, a thriller about drone warfare that won rave reviews at the Toronto film festival last year, and repeating his voiceover as Absolem the Caterpillar in Alice Through the Looking Glass, also due for release later this year.

Does anyone else find it strange that he died from cancer at 69 just days after David Bowie died from cancer at 69?

yes and add to this today's death of Lemmy from Motorhead, (Ian Fraser),70 years old, same month of dying, same reason (cancer)

After the doctors in alternative medecine, are we having the singers and actors?

Lemmy had written songs against reptilian when younger, Bowie had very briefly mentioned reptilian in an interview when he was 27, I wonder if anyone else including Rickman had talked about reptilians when younger.

Bowie talking about Warhol:

Burroughs: Have you ever met Warhol?

Bowie: Yes, about two years ago I was invited up to The Factory. We got in the lift and went up and when it opened there was a brick wall in front of us. We rapped on the wall and they didn't believe who we were. So we went back down and back up again till finally they opened the wall and everybody was peering around at each other. That was shortly after the gun incident. I met this man who was the living dead. Yellow in complexion, a wig on that was the wrong color, little glasses. I extended my hand and the guy retired, so I thought, "The guy doesn't like flesh, obviously he's reptilian." He produced a camera and took a picture of me. And I tried to make small talk with him, and it wasn't getting anywhere.

Lemmy

Many of his lyrics refers to the much darker side of exploitation and power

Just cause you get the power

You might be a financial wizard, with a sack of loot
But all I see is a slimy lizard, with an expensive suit
Go on and run your corporation, go on and kiss some ass,
You can buy up half the nation, but you can't buy class,
You bastards think it's funny, living and stealing all you life,
Think all there is, is money, got your future wrapped up tight
Just 'Cos You Got The Power, that don't mean you got the right

You can take fingers, buddy, you can take my eyes,
You can take my past and future, it won't make you wise,
You can have me thrown in jail, you can steal my booze,
You can even steal my mail, step on my blue suede shoes,
You bastards might be clever, got it mapped out in black and white,
But remember you can never, get a dog to stand upright,
Just 'Cos You Got The Power, that don't mean you got the right

Go on out and make another deal, feed your big fat face,
Go on out and cop the feel, get on somebody's case,
You surely could be satisfied, if you could get it all
But time ain't on your side, you're going to the wall,
You think that life's just dollars, won with greed and lust and spite
But I wasn't born to follow, like to get me sleep at night,
Just 'Cos You Got The Power, that don't mean you got the right

David Bowie´s video Lazarus made as "parting gift" to the fans.
Alan Rickmans popular character Dr. Lazarus in Galaxy quest (One of my favourites movies, funny but also very tragic).
Any Motörhead - Lazarus connection?

And the information about the reptilians... Warhol could easily passed as one...
Joke aside, this new year has started very badly, I think...:(

I was waiting for that. :) There might well be aspects we don't know about. On the other hand, it's winter, and statistically Jan is a big month for people passing on....

What amazing lives they both led.

The only thing I found was a cover of the Motorhead by a group names Lazarus - i think it is unrelated, but yet funny

I just came across this (https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/abraham-greenhouse/alan-rickmans-gaza-play-censored-theater-staging-david-bowies-lazarus) article revealing the fact that Alan Rickman was involved in highlighting Rachel Corrie's cause (and by default the Palestinian one) by directing the "initial London run of My Name is Rachel Corrie, a play based on the writings of the US activist crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza two years prior".

The article then goes on to say how the New York Theatre Workshop, currently staging Bowie's Lazarus had indefinitely postponed the Corrie play which had been scheduled to be performed there back in 2006 giving all kinds of excuses such as Ariel Sharon's recent stroke and "distorted accounts" of Corrie's death.

The play was ultimately staged at New York's Minetta Lane Theatre.

Respect and rest in peace.

Was Bowie mentioned on the Simpsons the day he died? Is this rumour credible?

Glen Frey, guitarist from the Eagles and also in solo dies.

Another one dies at 67, but not from cancer but from a mix of arthritis, ulcerative colitis and pneumonia - strange, nobody dies from these generally.

Any Lazarus, reptilians or anything that could relate to the others and make it a trend?
