Is it because we put ourselves in that situation or is it touching some deeper emotion?

It's not...
At least to the one being scared...
That said...maybe we all know deep inside that we are immortal souls, can't be harmed, and that this whole "reality thing" is just an illusion...if you catch my drift.

Or maybe it hits deeply to how we would react and by laughing we put ourselves above the fear?

yes and yes, spot on.
add to that, if confronted by someone being aggressive, trying to push physical conflict, not looking scared, laughing at them can make them mad and so a less controlled/focused energy they have.
It also gives you and your comrades bravado.

This is another example of our conditioned state of mind. Masking one’s insecurities may be part of it…but I believe this is linked to other issues many of us seem to constantly over look.
Ever since a tot you were cleverly trained to be insensitive, and rude. As a little one, you watched cartoons where the humor is with animals inflicting harm on each other…and as you get older, the animals turned into humans. Seeing the face of fear on cartoon characters is a way to supplant instincts, subliminally transforming the default positive mindset with negative thoughts…what else do you expect to follow?
Soon you’ll learned how to do pranks, and tell tasteless jokes for laughs and popularity. As you age your mind becomes accustomed to seeing failure/stress in others as a form of entertainment. Why as a kid did you see someone fall out of a seat and laugh? Why laugh when seeing someone trip and stumble. Why laugh when someone gets slapped in the face? why laugh when you hear someone curse someone else out? Why laugh when someone gets K.O. ? I mean…What’s really so funny seeing some dude slip on a banana peel? I mean really…
We are trained to laugh at others misfortunes, the way they talk, walk, express themselves, how they adversely feel/react to uncomfortable instances. However, there’s nothing comical about any of this, it’s actually sad to say the least, it’s even sadder knowing that this is not as obvious as it should be.
This is the results of our upbringing, our collective mind is trained to be subverted and perverted. If anything, look at this as one of our many issues that needs to be remedy before humanity can reach its true potential.

I think there is a lesson to be learned in all this.. re: human perception, spontaneous fear reactions, loss of control of reason, etc...
and this "ghost" in the elevator... is evidence people are operating more on what is going on inside their heads then what is going on outside their preconceived notions of reality... surprised some of these people didn't have heart attacks

Thank you sigma for being honest, I thought so too. It's interesting that we also like to be scared at least thinking we might like going to a haunted house on Halloween or going to a scary movie. Maybe it is not funny though if we are not prepared for the prank and then like you said he was a good sport. Nonetheless I still don't understand it and it seems like Hollywood makes it big business. Cheers
