Apollo 10 declassified tapes to reveal puzzling ‘musical’ transmission from Moon’s dark side

Another reminder of space being a creepy place has been presented in the lost Apollo
10 tapes – the mission that circled over to the dark side of the Moon. The tapes contain
strange ‘music’ that was received out of Earth’s signal reach. The mission happened in
May just ahead of Apollo 11’s 1969 moon landing two months later. The recordings
recovered from Apollo 10 were only declassified in 2008 and will now be played on the
Science Channel’s Unexplained Files coming up later this month. So, what was strange
about those recordings? Besides the fact that they contained a very musical dance of
frequencies and noise, it was the fact that they could not have come from any
manmade source, as there’s no radio signal on the far side of the Moon. This means
also that astronauts can’t talk to Earth and are effectively alone in outer space for the
duration of their time there.

In 1969, two months before Neil Armstrong would set foot on the moon, Apollo 10 was
cruising just above the lunar surface when the crew was surprised by a “whistling
sound.” The three astronauts discuss the incident at length in the upcoming show.Al
Worden, astronaut with Apollo 15, explains: “There are recorders that record whatever’s
going on on the back side, and then you do a data dump when you come around the
front side, and Houston or mission control then can see what happened when you were
around the back side.”

The “music” transmission lasted for almost an hour, and had the crew talking about
whether NASA needed to know at all what they had heard. "It's unbelievable! You
know?” they confess. Almost five decades later there is still no clue as to the source.
When the three eventually got back, they opted not to tell NASA, which could be a
smart move, seeing as the agency could have had them remanded into custody and
kept from flying because of concerns for their mental state. The debate will rage on in
the upcoming episode of ‘NASA’s Unexplained Files’, as scientists continue to discuss the
more prominent theories: one possible one is that charged particles were interacting
with a magnetic field, the way they did on Jupiter and Saturn. There’s of course one
problem here: the Moon has no magnetic field or atmosphere of any kind.

Time will tell.

Interesting video. Thanks fore posting.

Unfortunately it didn't mention if this was a once-only event, or happened each time they orbited over the far side. (Not sure how many times Apollo 10 orbited the moon.)

Nevertheless there were other NASA missions that did similar manoeuvres. Did they hear similar sounds over their radios? If not, is that because they were using different frequencies, equipment or transmission systems? There would be a clue if we knew that info.

I expect they used analogue transmission systems, so it's quite possible the odd noises were due to solar radiation, or signals generated within the earth's magnetosphere or some other unexpected but natural phenomenon.

BTW, if RT don't understand that the moon has no 'dark side' they shouldn't even be reporting this kind of stuff.

'Dark side' is poetic verbage for the side of the moon previously unseen. Not to be taken literally.

Making a few inferences about the sound.
Maybe try to find linkage?
1. Structures on the dark side.
2. Sound emanating out from the dark side.
3. Earth locations are not able to hear the sound.

The sound might be a beacon to other space travelers arriving in to the solar system. A sort of welcome message.

Structures on the dark side.

Interesting little vid , he starts off debunking an image that was going
around the web , but finds some other odd patterns.

I was looking through the latest picture going around of a so called base
on the moon and I pretty much think I debunked that but in the same
picture there is a totally legit base / area of life on the same picture!
Check it out and download it and let me know what you think!

That might be true, but I know educated people who think there really is a 'dark side', what with Pink Floyd and everything!

Unfortunately it didn't mention if this was a once-only event, or happened each time
they orbited over the far side. (Not sure how many times Apollo 10 orbited the moon.)

They heard the sounds in both craft and during the second pass around the back
side of the moon the noise stopped leaving an 'eerie ' quite which the astronauts
comment on in the NASA transcript shown in the first few mins of this mainstream doc.

The rest of the doc is debating whether the moon landing were real or not.
Up to you whether you watch the full doc , nothing new one side contradicting
the other.

Amid an era of global political suspicion the greatest conspiracy theory of all
time casts doubt on what should be the greatest achievement of the age.
Did the Apollo 11 astronauts really land on the moon, or was this an elaborate
hoax by NASA to satisfy political demands?

Bill Kaysing the former head of technical publications for Rocketdyne is considered,
by many, to be the father of moon conspiracy theorists. Both he and Ralph René
the author of NASA Mooned America set out their stall with all the evidence
supporting their theory:

Contradicting shadows in photographs, moon walk was a slow motion film, no stars
in night sky, flag fluttering in a breeze, lack of Computing power to land the lunar
module, can't manipulate camera to take photographs, dust below lunar module
should have been disturbed, film would be damaged by radiation... etc.

This episode presumes we went to the moon as is self evident as you watch
the show. These shows are usually over dramatized imo , but interesting
all the same.

Apollo 10 astronauts 'heard weird music on far side of moon'

Nasa has released the audio of the conversations Apollo 10 astronauts
had upon hearing what they called "outer space type music".

Apollo 10 astronauts reported hearing strange noises during their 1969 mission.

Crew members Eugene Cernan and John Young are heard discussing the
sound while they were flying on the far side of the moon.

Astronauts onboard Apollo 10 say they heard mysterious "music" on the far side of
the Moon. They didn't know if they were hearing things and were left wondering if
music really was coming from behind the Moon. The answer is - sort of - but not really.

They could hear an "outer space-type" droning musical sound when they went
around the back of the Moon at the end of the 1960s and say they were worried
nobody would believe them.

The noises started when the capsule was on a 60-minute trip around the Moon and
the craft was out of range of earth. This has all come out ahead of the next series of
Nasa's Unexplained Files on the Science Channel. In the programme astronauts
Eugene Cernan and John Young can be heard saying, "You hear that? That whistling
sound?"

Another astronaut says: "That sure is weird music."

The sounds lasted for almost an hour and was captured on tape but wasn't released
by Nasa until 2008, when it was declassified.

It happened in 1969 when Apollo 10 entered lunar orbit.

The programme discusses some of the possible reasons for the sound.

They include radio interference caused by a magnetic field or the atmosphere.

However, the Moon has no magnetic field and not enough atmosphere to cause these sounds.

One of the more sensible suggestions was that noise was "interference between the
Lunar Module's and Command Module's VHF radios".

Michael Collins, the pilot of Apollo 11, says he also heard the noises when flying
around the "dark side" of the Moon but was told by engineers that it was just radio
interference.

He said in his book, Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys, that the noise
started when the radios in both were turned on and close to each other but stopped
when the lunar module landed on the Moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin inside.

The far side of the Moon is sometime known as the "dark" side of the Moon,
although both sides have two weeks of sunlight followed by two weeks of night.
