Heads up in the Pacific on March 9 for the next eclipse!

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN: Next week, there's going to be a total eclipse of the sun. During the early hours of March 9th the new Moon will pass directly in front of the sun. The Moon's shadow will lance down toward Earth, making landfall only on the islands of Indonesia before it races out onto the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Inside the Moon's cool shadow, sky watchers can look up and see the sun's ghostly corona, a mesmerizing sight that longtime NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak says "on a scale of 1 to 10--it's a million!"

Outside the narrow path of totality, the eclipse will be partial. Observers all around the Pacific will be able to see a crescent-shaped sun in the sky casting crescent-shaped shadows on the ground below. In Hawaii, 60% to 70% of the sun will be covered, quite a bit more than the 20% coverage in Alaska. The Australian sun will be as much as 50% blocked.

This is the last solar eclipse before the "Big One" next year. On August 21st, 2017, the sun and Moon will line up again. This time the Moon's shadow will cross the entire USA, creating a total eclipse in easy driving distance of tens of millions of people. It will likely be the best observed eclipse in human history

This is a big event here in India. The eclipse comes the day after the yearly Shiva festival. Maha Shivaratri.

The Hindu holiday of Maha Shivaratri—or “The great night of Shiva”—falls prior to the eclipse, on the evening of March 7 (if you live on the West Coast, it will fall on March 6). On this night, the thin sliver of waning moon—the Shiva Moon—which he wears in his matted hair, will be seen rising before dawn from 4:00 - 5:30 am (depending on location.)

In India, it is customary to stay up all night, fasting and singing mantras to Lord Shiva, who is known as the destroyer. Often depicted in a wild dance of destruction, Shiva is also seen as a yogi seated quietly on a Himalayan mountainside, deep in contemplation.

It is said that when Shiva leaves the Himalayas, he makes his home in the cremation ground and smears his body with the ashes of the dead. Around the time of this eclipse, it would be wise to take a cue from Lord Shiva, and take the time to sift through the heavy baggage you may have been carting around for decades—or in some cases, lifetimes—and let it go. This is an eclipse that can liberate you from the shackles of old karmic patterns, if you are willing to cut the cords.

Although this Solar Eclipse will only be visible in totality in areas of the Pacific Ocean, Indonesia and Malaysia, it will be partially visible in Australia, India and Hawaii. Whether it is seen or not, its influence will still be felt, especially by people who have critical natal points in sidereal Aquarius and in the nakshatra of Purva Bhadrapada.
