DC police confirm that shots have been fired at a visitor center at the US Capitol, with individuals warned to shelter in place.

According to officials, one Capitol police officer has been shot, but is not seriously wounded, and the shooter is in custody. US Capitol Police sent out a message to Capitol staff that no one will be allowed to enter or exit any buildings.


Emergency workers are reportedly en route to treat multiple injuries. One ambulance with a Capitol police escort appears to be en route to the Washington Hospital Center from the Capitol Complex.


Street barriers have been raised.


The White House has also been placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. Thousands are currently on the South Lawn participating in the annual Easter Egg roll.
Thousands of tourists have streamed into DC to celebrate the capital's annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

I turned on CNN and the report was a Capitol Police officer was shot and the suspect was taken into custody. A woman was taken to the hospital with shrapnel wound(s). The Capitol Building was cordoned off and the White House was placed on lockdown.

D.C. police and fire officials are responding to a report of shots fired at the Capitol Visitor Center at the U.S. Capitol complex, according to authorities.

"The person believed to be the gunman has been shot by police, according to two D.C. police officials. He was taken to Washington Hospital Center.

An email sent to U.S. Senate staff says “gunshots have been reported” and asked workers to shelter in place. The White House also was placed on lockdown.

“There has been an isolated incident at the U.S. Capitol Center,” D.C. police tweeted. “There is no active threat to the public.”

The visitors’ center is an underground complex located east of the Capitol building. All visitors are screened through metal detectors as they enter the facility."
