EgyptAir hijack: Most passengers freed at Larnaca airport

From the section Middle East

Most of the passengers on board a hijacked Egyptian airliner that was forced to divert to
Cyprus have been freed, the airline says.

EgyptAir Flight MS181 was taken over after a passenger said he was wearing an
explosives belt.

EgyptAir said negotiations at Larnaca airport had resulted in the release of all those on
board, apart from the crew and four foreign passengers.

Video showed people leaving the jet and boarding a bus.

Latest reports from Cypriot media suggest there is just one hijacker who was motivated
by "personal reasons" - his ex-wife is said to live in Cyprus - and may be seeking
asylum, although this has not been confirmed.

' NOT A TERRORIST ' .....

Reports say the lone hijacker wants to talk to his estranged wife in Cyprus,
and the Cypriot president has said the hijack is not a terrorist incident.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said: "We are doing our utmost
in order for everyone to be released and safe."

In response to a reporter's question about whether the hijacker was
motivated by romance, he laughed and said: "Always there is a woman involved."

EgyptAir hijack: Man surrenders at Larnaca airport

The hijacking of a domestic Egyptian flight that forced it to divert to Larnaca airport
in Cyprus has ended with all hostages being released and the hijacker surrendering.

EgyptAir Flight MS181 was taken over by a passenger claiming to be wearing a suicide
explosive belt. After a morning of tension, the hijacker was seen walking down the
steps of the aircraft with his hands raised.

His motives remain unclear.

Live updates

Some reports said the Egyptian man - named by Cypriot officials as Seif Eldin Mustafa -
wanted to talk to his estranged Cypriot wife who lives on the Mediterranean island, while
others said he was seeking the release of female prisoners in Egypt.

The Cypriot president insisted that the hijack was not terrorism-related.

The hijacker's surrender came shortly after several people were seen fleeing the aircraft.
One - apparently a crew member - escaped by climbing out of the aircraft's cockpit window.

An Egyptian hijacker who forced a domestic flight to
land in Cyprus used a fake suicide belt, officials said.

His motives remain unclear but the Cypriot president
said the incident was not terrorism-related.

Footage released by Egypt's interior ministry shows
the man passing through several security checks at
Alexandria's Borg El Arab airport.

The drama ended with all passengers released unhurt
at Larnaca airport and the man giving himself up.

Hijacking a plane to obtain asylum?

Anyone should be able to estimate the success rate of that.

Considering mental problems.
