I've seen a number of cables which reference "The Great Game" including this one below:

And this one in a discussion with Prince Andrew, in which he states that the British Empire "Plans to Win" this time:

My guess from reading this is that the Great Game is slang for some kind of geopolitical chess match being played by the PTB - the one we see every day in some form or another but which we don't necessarily understand. To see it even described in this sort of term makes you wonder just what else they were hiding? If geopolitics, arguably one of the most relevant human endeavours currently in operation (in the sense of how many lives it directly impacts) is just considered a "Game" at the top, then what do these people think about the people at the bottom? Are we just pawns in said game? Well if so, I'm going to do my best to be an informed pawn - not that I haven't already been trying (I am here at Avalon aren't I?)

If anyone else finds more references to this, please post them. It "feels" important to the bigger story to me.

Also, part II of the first cable I linked here:

A bit of an older game, but yeah, you were pretty much right about the "geopolitical chess match" part.

ETA: here is another Wikipedia article that has that Prince Andrew quote from one of the cables you linked. Must've recently been made and/or edited:
