Locals believe a hideous creature found dead in a European mountain range is the legendary Chupacabra.

Experts are struggling to identify the macabre remains of the 'mutant' animal , which was discovered in the Carpathian Mountains.

It does not look like any known creature, according to Ukraine's TSN channel.

The mummified corpse appears to have several rows of teeth, four legs, a long tail and small, oval-shaped eyes.

It was found by a man walking through Kolomyja town, Ivano-Frankivsk region.

The man later said: "I was shocked by the number of teeth

"It is not a cat. Cats' teeth are different.

"I saw 3 or 4 rows here."

His wife added: "Just look at this. Such a horrible creature.

"A Chupacabra was our first thought."

The infamous Chupacabra is believed to kill rabbits and drink their blood.

Ukrainian wildlife expert Mykhailo Luschak said: "This animal does not fit the description of any known species.

"It has got double upper cutting teeth.

"Other teeth features that are not common for any known animal."

Previously, mysterious remains found in the region have turned out to be martens.

The latest corpse was examined by biologists at Ivano-Frankivsk University.

They concluded the head is too big for a marten and have demanded a DNA test on the animal.

Gruesome pictures of the brown-coloured animal show its has deadly fangs, a longish neck and short front legs.

Earlier sightings led to claims that such mutants could be foxes poisoned by radiation.

Another theory is that it might be a hybrid originating from a Soviet plant conducting tests on animals relating to chemical or biological weapons development.

A 2012 sighting concluded a similar-looking creature could be a hybrid originating from a Soviet plant conducting tests on animals relating to chemical or biological weapons development.

"A creature we were not supposed to see has escaped from a secret defence lab," said one comment.

Mikhail Ilchenko, deputy head of the district veterinary service in Mikhailovskoe, told Komsomolskaya Pravda, Ukraine: "The animal doesn't look like a fox or a wolf, or a raccoon."

The Chupacabra is a legendary cryptid rumoured to inhabit parts of North and South America.

It probably wasn't so much a hideous creature when it was alive. But I am an animal lover so there is that.

It looks like a dog to me. It looks nothing like a cat so I don't know why that was suggested, far more like a dog

Poor thing, looks like a mutated dog, probably died of mange and radiation exposure.

The term 'Chupacabra' is associated with Latin America and has its roots in Spanish.

Never in a million years is it cat-like so for them to say "It is not a cat" leads me to suspect that it is cat sized. There is no other indication of scale.

It is certainly partly mummified, yet the body is clean looking so it was not just rain-washed out of a peat bog or something.

The rear left 'paw'? looks splayed and quite large - moreso than you would expect from a dog family. The broad forehead and short snout are similar in style to a cross-bred terrier such as pitbull. I don't really see rows of teeth, but yes, a poor alignment of teeth.

I'll go out and a limb and suggest it is a young animal with slight mutations. Neither cat nor dog. What does that leave us? Badger family maybe?

Whatever it was, it is so sad to see him/her displayed as a "hideous creature" in death. . . .nothing is any more hideous about it than any other dead body, human animals included.

It looks to me like another product of Genetic Engineering, then they throw the poor thing out to see whether it will survive or not. Its teeth don't seem to have a bite. Perhaps it starved to death. How I wish this fate upon its creators.
