‘Leading human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has said that student-led
oppression of free speech within universities has gone “too far”, following new
reports that nearly two thirds of students are in favour of controversial “no-
platforming” policies.

A survey commissioned by the BBC suggests that 63 per cent of UK university
students believe the National Union of Students (NUS) is right to have a “no-
platform” policy, whereby individuals or groups with opinions deemed to be
offensive can be banned from speaking on student union premises.’

NUS 'right to have no platform policy'

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of university students believe the National Union of
Students is right to have a "no platforming" policy, a survey suggests.

The policy means people or groups on a banned list for holding racist or fascist
views are not given a platform to speak on student union premises.

And 54% of 1,001 students asked thought the policy should be enforced against
people who could be found intimidating.

The NUS said the policy allowed free speech without intimidation.

ComRes interviewed 1,001 UK university students online for the survey,
commissioned by the Victoria Derbyshire programme, with data weighted by course
year, university type and gender.

The NUS official no platform list contains six groups including the BNP and Al-
Muhajiroun, but individual unions and student groups can decide their own.

they have experience of the totalitarian tip toe. The 'War on Terror' is a control
meme , Mrs Thatcher will be turning in her crypt as for all her faults , thru out the
40 years of the troubles in Northern Ireland and mainland we were told to be
vigilant not paranoid and to carry on with life normally. The amount of people killed
by terrorist acts are tiny compared to all the other domestic potential hazards
and accidents that kill millions every day.......

‘Britain is sleep-walking into an Orwellian surveillance state, with most of its
citizens unaware of or disinterested in the far-reaching implications of the
government’s Investigatory Powers (IP) Bill, a new survey suggests.

A poll conducted by broadband comparison site Broadband Genie reveals the
widespread confusion many Brits are experiencing with respect to the
soon-to-be-implemented legislation.

Known to its opponents as the “snoopers’ charter,” the bill will give UK law
enforcement bodies unprecedented access to citizens’ online activities.

It will allow them to force broadband providers such as BT and Virgin to store
people’s internet browsing history and hand over this data to the state in the
absence of judicial oversight.’

agency is pouring money in start-ups mining tweets, Instagram photos, and
Facebook posts.

‘The head of Russia’s Central Investigative Committee has urged the country’s
officials to step up control of the internet, using China’s experience as a model to
counter pressure from the United States.

In a major interview with the Kommersant Vlast magazine, Aleksandr Bastrykin
said that on March 10 the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information introduced
a complete ban on electronic mass media completely or partially owned by foreign
citizens or companies.

Chinese laws also forbid national mass media to cooperate with foreigners without a
special permit and only Chinese citizens can hold managerial posts in mass media
companies. Besides, Chinese internet media are legally obliged to keep their data
on servers located in the country.’

German cities introduce ground traffic lights for distracted phone users

‘Authorities in the German cities of Cologne and Augsburg have installed traffic lights
on the ground in the hope that they will get the attention of distracted phone users
and stop them from walking out in front of traffic.

At various tram stops around both cities, rows of red LED lights have been installed by
the curb and when a tram or bus is approaching, they flash.

It’s hoped the introduction of the lights will prevent so-called “smombies” (smartphone zombies)
from being injured in road traffic incidents, which is what happened on two occasions in Augsburg recently.’

‘Perfect Match’: A Quarter of Young People in the UK Would Date a Robot

‘A new survey of British adults has found that one in four of those young adults
surveyed would be happy to go on a “date” with Artificial Intelligence.

The survey, conducted in the UK by research company ComRes and published by
Nesta, found that 25% of people aged 18 to 34 participating in the questionnaire
would date an android if it looked human, and was programmed to act like their
“perfect match.”

“Our bodies, our identities and our senses are enhancing thanks to technology and
societal shifts,” Ghislaine Boddington, co-founder and creative director of East London
