It's similar to the sun's coronal mass ejection; not really anything coming "out" of the black hole, but a burst of mass and energy from the material surrounding it.

Not really new ... I think it is considered by NASA that all black holes spew out x-rays streams from their poles constantly. So the whole linked story is a bit misleading, the sense that it catches you with "something came out of a black hole!" - conjuring images of a Borg cube and the like ... when really it's just stating the already known. It was probably new to the author though and he got overexcited ... :)

I wish they did spew something out, then I could find & throttle every single person who ever uttered the tired old phrase ".....not even light". I get so sick of reading that! They ALWAYS say it, always.
