Mount Sinabung, in Tanah Karo, North Sumatra, a volcano in western Indonesia has unleashed hot clouds of ash, killing three villagers and injuring four others.

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province blasted volcanic ash as high as 3 kilometres into the sky on Saturday, said National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

He said ash tumbled down the slopes as far as 4.5 kilometres westward into a river.

The 2600-metre-high mountain in Karo District had been dormant for four centuries before springing to life in August 2010, killing two people and forcing 30,000 to flee.

An eruption in February 2014 killed 16 people.

All the victims of Saturday's eruption were working on their farms in the village of Gamber in Simpang Empat subdistrict, about 4 kilometres away from the slope, or within the danger area.

Mount Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Now another one... Turrialba volcano has erupted in central Costa Rica, belching smoke and ash up to 3,000m (9,840ft) into the air.

Hundreds of people have gone to hospital, complaining of breathing difficulties and skin problems.

Some schools were shut and some flights into the country cancelled or diverted.

People in the capital San Jose, about 45km (30 miles) west of the Turrialba volcano, said layers of ash had coated buildings and cars and there was a fierce smell of sulphur.

Costa Rica's National Emergencies Commission has advised people to wear masks and tight clothing to protect their lungs and skin.

"It seems to me to be the strongest (Turrialba) eruption in the past six years," volcanologist Gino Gonzalez told reporters.

Tens of thousands of people living near Mount Sinabung had been ordered to leave their homes before it began erupting furiously early on Monday.

A warning notice was issued to airlines as the rumbling volcano, one of three currently erupting in Indonesia, continued to unleash hot clouds of ash.

The country's disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the hot ash clouds were travelling as far as 16,000 feet southwards.

The huge column of ash has reached about 5,000m and a "roar" is heard as it billows into the sky.

ATM no fatalities have been reported, and that an evacuation of the area had taken place prior to today.

Volcanic ash is not something to be breathed in by people, animals, or "engines" (jet, planes, motorcycles, cars, trucks, etc..)

Airlines notice:

“There will likely be disruptions to flights in the vicinity of Mt Sinabung in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, following a large eruption at 12.53pm AEDT today.
“The eruption has sent volcanic ash 55 000 feet into the atmosphere.
“The Bureau of Meteorology's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) has briefed airlines and will continue to work closely with the aviation industry.”

Seismic track - eruption seen clearly - there were "pulses" prior to the eruption, an indication activity was happening

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, disaster management spokesman in Indonesia, has said it is not yet clear how long the eruption will last.

In his latest update, Mr Mugroho said people living in 10 villages in the area are being relocated due to the threat posed by the explosion.

There appears to be activity showing up early AM on the SIDE of the volcano - first pix for reference then subsequent images showing location - 0426 AM shows strong "hot spot"

A new "hot spot" has formed.

Either ash/lava flow or an opening. (almost reminds me of Mt. St. Helens before the side of the mountain blew off)

Seismic recording continues to show internal activity - similar to Ecuador's Tungurahua, and Reventador volcano's during periods between eruptions.

Visible eruption currently is minimal - the hot-spot shows as a dark scar-like rift on the south side of the volcano near the top

Sinabung Eruption Signals Year without a Summer Cycle
I'm not sure about the accuracy of this source's information, but perhaps some of Avalon's more scientific members will comment.
It would be nice if he would calm down and stop sounding borderline hysterical, but if his information is accurate, it can't be ignored.

The awakening of Sinabung among other volcanoes awakening on a multi century cycle, indicates that the grand solar minimum intensification of intense eruptions has begun. This latest eruption of Sinabung has sent ash 17KM/55,000ft into the atmosphere which reached the troposphere and will spread across Asia. Iceland awakens as well and the world is not ready to handle another "Year Without a Summer" which this signals. Good luck in your preparations.

I cannot imagine living near an area that has active volcanism ... that much dust/ash cloud covering everything, and the wind blowing it right into your community ... you would have to travel with a mask, goggles, etc , not knowing when it will happen ...
