His play is to fund open source AI, so closed source projects can't dominate the planet.
What do you think, good or bad idea?

AI may be a problem, I hope he succeeds. Elon Musk is better than most of them out there in SV.

The title of your post is missleading. As he only want's to stop closed source AI.

Of course it's good... open source keeps helps maintain transparency, and is a means of distributing the wealth... it also encourages wider participation and evolution of software development...
...once a critical mass of programmers have gained proficiency, any upgrades and glitches discovered are fixed in a open collaborative effort, there is no dependency on any one programmer, company or group... it just makes good sense (for the people) software is as important as the roads we drive on, and the pipes that distribute water...
OS and network software are like utilities.... society is irreversibly dependent on them to maintain our existing standard of continuing intellectual growth
Having advanced technology while not having the wisdom and spiritual understanding is a very dangerous idea.

Exactly. No AI will ever be any better than the agenda of the people paying the programmers to write it.

There's little to nothing that can be done to stop it.
Opening it up may be the best answer, from a multitude of worse ones.
Take a look at my post in PA, http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?90910-Ex-Illuminati-tells-what-plans-they-have-for-us.-Allegedly.&p=1070519#post1070519
Scheme I think picked up an "article" written by AI being used in Social Media.
The technique that probably is being used by the program to first "mine social media" to see what the "buzz words" and "highest hits" are that get interest.
Then assemble a social personality to "fit the bill", and then solicit interaction with the members.
How the members respond, how they "pour" their souls out, then provides the data-miner with a wealth of usable data, for attack or duping..
No doubt somebody wants to know how to "do it better".
I think AI in social media is a dastardly contrived tool to get people to "reveal".
Elon Musk wanting to have the "revealed" data comes as no surprise. Open source obviously in the AI case, is one of those "revealed the secrets" ploys.
Building companies, selling products based on "data mined" interests of people sounds like he is applying his historical business strategy.

programming smartly according to how people responds is not exactly AI. Actually it is very far from it.
AI is a very serious bit of software, and it is a dangerous one in that..an actual bit of AI software will learn exponentially. At gigahertz speed, these days.
There is one company I know of that managed to get the kernel of a software design, as compared to human wiring...they managed to get this to be correct.
Then they "sort of" disappeared (still here but gone silent). This was in 1998-1999.
There is only a few things one needs to know, in order to design a learning self assembling AI kernel. And we most seriously ~DON'T~ like to talk about it. It's just bad news.

I looked at that and it was good to see three people found the same three "holes" I did; not to mention, the whole piece had an artificial feel to it, and tasted like a refreshing slice of marketing.
I don't personally see anything cool or interesting about AI, just not something I want to interact with. If it's coming anyway, then an open-source version would be desirable.
