View Full Version : Is there an explanation for this sensation?

Recently I've been suffering with something rather unpleasant when I am falling asleep. I'll be in that semi-wakeful state, where I'm dreaming but not quite asleep yet, and then I suddenly get this awful feeling of dread, and a jolt goes through my body, making me wake up fully. This is not connected to the dreams in the least because the dreams are always something obscure from the day before at that point (you know, the stage where you're mulling over the day's events).

It's really disrupting my sleep which, as an insomniac already, I can do without.

I've mentioned here before about a weird waking experience I had in 2006, but that was a singular thing, and this is getting to be frequent. If anyone has any idea what it could be, something invasive, or a known psychological effect, or anything I might not have thought of, I would really appreciate the input.

There are as many ways to meditate as there are people in the world, it's at your beck and call.
I my self have noticed that the more intuitive i become the harder it is to sleep these days, And the more i realize this effect the more I may have troubles getting sleep, it's almost like the more gifted one become the more things happen to them good or bad.

You need time to catch up to your spirit and find seclusion in your life if possible.

When you get those feelings of dread simply tell it to leave and that you are in charge of who you are and what you need.

OR
Ask it what it means out right, is it meant for you, are you picking up on someone else who needs help.

Start writing things down in as much details as possible there may be a pattern.

I had a bad episode last night of Night Terror and Sleep Paralysis.

I don't know if that is what you are describing, but it felt like an attack to me.

If it felt like an attack then it probably was. write it down date and time,

Hmm I certainly relate to what you're saying about intuition counter balancing sleep. I've been an insomniac since 2003, which was the same time I learnt to lucid dream. I've always felt there was a correlation there.

The problem is this awful feeling is just a jolt, it rises from my abdomen and then through me up and out my skull in what seems like an instant. I've experienced sleep paralysis on and off for most of my life and never really thought much of it, are you saying that could be some form of attack too? I don't think I've ever experienced night terrors though.

One should always go with there first instincts on all things, as your true instincts never lie.

Also remember, whom ever you associate with, may bring in entities to you.
I have always had issues with sleep, But i also know that sleep is not sleep it is a shift in frequency, from one to the other, so if your a lucid dreamer, take note of what you are capable of doing and make sure you are shielded by staking claim to your own spirit while in transit.

Next time you encounter sleep paralysis take note of your surroundings, you have a clue there.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not sure if this is a-typical but whenever I experience sleep paralysis, I am in my bed. It's never in the context of a dream.

What do you see when in paralysis.

How do you perceive the darkness when you close eyes before going to bed or other activity?
Do you meditate or hypnosis?
You will be in control once you understand the nature of darkness / the hidden world.

Negative intentions and fears always attract dark beings around us.

Hi Cyaneyed,
Was wondering where in your abdomen the aweful feeling arises? Could it be chakra related. First, second, third chakra work is very much prevalent in our society these days.
Just a thought...

I am sure you are right about that. Have had trouble with these beings for quite a while now. Can't seem to shake them unless I really concentrate. But they cannot stop my contact with my higher self and I think that gets them even more focused on disrupting my life. I need energy work but I haven't the funds to pay for it...

That is wonderful advice shadowstalker... and yet another reminder for myself to be getting back to basics.

By asking it what it means, what it has to do with you, what does it need from you etc... you will be surprised at what you may find... once you ask, allow yourself to be receptive. Some of these sensations are only upsetting or scary or sensed as dread because we are not as familiar as we can be with this experience.

Once you know what it needs you to be aware of, you will feel better. And writing is an awesome way to free flow what you have inside. :)

What do you see when in paralysis.

My sleeping surroundings. It's always in bed, so I see the room I'm sleeping in, and on some occasions I feel as if my face is being pressed into the pillow, which adds a an extra sense of fear because it makes me fight the paralysis for fear of suffocation as well.

Honestly I perceive everything as fine. The ill-feeling just comes out of nowhere, and dissipates right as I am dragged back into full wakefulness. I meditate and I am very good at keeping myself in a positive frame of mind. I suffer from alot of issues like depression/anxiety/depersonalisation (the latter constantly), and I have become very adept at noticing the shifts in my own mood, withdrawing myself, meditating on them and raising my levels to positive ones again. I very rarely feel negative when I am going to sleep and this occurrence happens every night regardless of the mood I'm in when I (try to) go to sleep.

Interesting thought. It's the same ill feeling you get when you are feeling a sense of strong foreboding, like a child would get if they know they're about to be told off, an irrationally intense uncomfortable feeling. Centered just above the navel?

The phenomenon you are explaining is called "The Old Hag Syndrome". I had it for years. It really scares the **** out of you. My eldest twin son had it and he made a study of it.
Look it up in Google.

I can think of two out of what I am sure are many possibilities:

First thought was Sleep Apnea ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea

Second thought was as your energetic body is changing, there may be some kind of thing that could be characterized as "Astral misalignment" that prevents the clean reintegration of your astral body on the transition from sleep state to waking. The sensation is often like falling. If so then this is something you would need expert help with, which is not me. If I were in your shoes with this problem, I would be asking my guides or higherself for some help.

My first impression on reading this is that you are dealing with a Chakra imbalance - possibly a blocked chakra. I don't know how much you know about the Chakra system, but when one of the energy centers is blocked it can cause these sorts of jolts, for the energy isn't flowing through you as it's supposed to. If you are beieng woken up to feelings of dread it is probably one of the lower chakras that deal with the more basic bodily functions and processes (including how we physically deal with fear).
