Joint Base Andrews in Maryland has been placed on lockdown following a report of an active shooter.

The base was placed on lockdown just after 9 a.m. Thursday, officials at the base told News4. All personnel have been directed to shelter in place.

Joint Base Andrews said it had planned an active shooter exercise for 9 a.m., but around the same time, first responders received reports of an "real-world active shooter situation" at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility. The base says it investigating the incident as an ongoing active shooter situation.

"First it was an active-shooter exercise. Then it came back 'real world,''' Rodney Smith, a patient advocate at the medical facility, told the Associated Press by phone.

Reports of an active shooter at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland have been deemed unfounded after someone mistook an active shooter drill for the real thing, NBC News reports.

Joint Base Andrews in Maryland remains on lockdown Thursday morning as first responders continue to investigate. The base was locked down just after 9 a.m. and all personnel were directed to shelter in place.


Officials at the base said they were conducting an active shooter exercise at 9 a.m., but around the same time, first responders received reports of an "real-world active shooter situation" at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility.

Someone on the third floor of the medical facility saw two people walking across the base with long guns. The person didn't know there was a drill planned and called in the active shooter report, law enforcement officials told NBC News' Pete Williams.

Rodney Smith, a patient advocate at the medical facility, told The Associated Press the situation was unfolding at the newer of two buildings at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility. Smith was in the older building.

Joint Base Andrews, in Prince George's County, Maryland, is the home of Air Force One and to other emergency reaction units for the area around the nation's capital.

OK, that cleared itself up fairly quickly.

An active shooter drill at the location where the US president's plane is kept. Whether that means anything or not, is debatable.

‘Washington DC area was put on high alert today following reports of an
‘Active Shooter’ a Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, home of the president’s
Air Force One private jet.

The base has been placed on lock-down and first responders are on-scene
following a report of an active shooter at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility
located on Andrews. Authorities have instructed all personnel continue to
“shelter in place.”

There’s only one problem with this story: we also learned that the base had
planned a “no-notice” Active Shooter Exercise scheduled for 9 am this morning,
and as if by some amazing coincidence, during exercise, local first responders
received emergency calls about a ‘real world’ active shooter on the base.’

the only ones who are really believing any of this any more are the ones who stage the event in the first place. The rest of the information becomes fodder for the media outlets. and the rest of us are just waiting for someone in our government with a backbone to make real positive changes.
