All they did was lie.
So what?
Lying is no crime (at least it isn't in the US anymore). In fact, the folks who are supposed to hold the very most integrity lie, lie all the time, lie about the most important things and lie to everyone.
How dare Brazil do this!
Didn't they get the same memo Bill and Hillary and all their defenders got?
just preposterous... hhhrruuuummpphhhh!

They are indicted for lying to the police.

"Reporting a false crime"
Lying!
There's no crime in lying at all whatsoever... at least not for Americans in the US.
Just look at today's latest news regarding the ransom payment to Iran for hostages.
On August 4th Obama says the following:
http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/04/politics/iran-400-million-kerry-rejects-ransom/
Obama - ""We do not pay ransom. We didn't here, and we won't in the future."
Then State Department spokesman John Kirby says this today -
http://nypost.com/2016/08/18/state-department-400m-cash-to-iran-was-contingent-on-us-prisoners-release/
State Department spokesman John Kirby was asked at Thursday’s press briefing: “In basic English, you’re saying you wouldn’t give them $400 million in cash until the prisoners were released, correct?”
“That’s correct,” Kirby replied.
Definition of the term "ransom" -
A consideration paid or demanded for the release of someone or something from captivity.
So Obama lied (again) and my point is...
How could Brazil charge Americans for lying?
American lying is no crime. In fact, the more you lie, the more chances you have in becoming the next America president. And certainly if it is OK for the one person that most societies would expect to set high standards for integrity to lie, lie constantly, lie pathologically, cover for others who are lying too and to do so to the very face of every single person they speak to whether in person or via some form of audio or video... then how does Brazil have the gall to press charges against an American for lying?
Totally unacceptably outrageous.
I mean hey... in November when Hillary Clinton is elected, each and every person who voted for her is saying that not only is lying OK, but that constant, pathological lying is even more so. How ironic too that even if she isn't honestly elected, she will be anyways by the machines we allow to lie on our behalf to make sure she is.
And don't think that my statement in any way is meant to say that Trump is great, Trump is good and Trump will save the day. But anyone who supports a proven pathological liar to be their countries chief executive is also making the statement that -
Lying is OK, especially if done constantly, pathologically to anyone and everyone over and over and over.
How dare Brazil....!

Are you kidding me?
Arrested because they lied? Rather arrested because they put a black cloud on a countrie's police force by accusing them of taking their money or something of the kind at gun point. They may have changed their story on advice from US officials or from a lawyer or something.
They will come back, with no charge.
But let me tell you, in any poor country, the last thing I trust are the police forces. I have literally seen the same thing about what they are telling, policeman robbing them, but for me, in Mexico, from either real police or disguised people into police uniforms. I have also seen it first hand at Mexico City airport as well. It is easier to give money than getting raped, or else, if without remaining money, tell a lie, such as that your family is awaiting you at the Canadian airport and if you are not there, it will be a diplomacy nightmare for them, you being a high level ranking daughter (which was not true).
So the poor US chaps were probably robbed and telling the truth the first time around.
And all of BRazil knows about this.

Actually, you have it very wrong. Even one of the swimmers came clean. Also there's massive video evidence that backs up exactly what was reported (and note, the facts are still unfolding) by the Brazillian police at a press conference that lasted close to an hour and was completed just a few hours ago.
The truth is that these guys did what most American males do (and plenty of American females do) when they go to a place like Rio de Janeiro... they partied, they got two (or more) hookers and perhaps (just speculation on my part) did some of the white stuff and... lost their self control when going to a gas station men's room... broke a mirror and did an estimated $30 - $50 in damage.
All the video supports this.
So does the testimony of all the non-Americans including the security officer who did draw his gun on these clowns when they tried to get away to avoid paying for the damage which, by the way, they finally did.
But none of this speaks to the point of my thread.
Under US standards, the crime these guys are being charged with is... NO CRIME!
Lying is totally and completely acceptable to just about everyone in the US. In fact, and I repeat... it is NOT a crime. You do not get indicted for lying in the US even when the laws on the books say it is a crime to lie under oath to a body such as the US Congress (which is the same thing as lying to each and every US citizen and resident and anyone else who is effected by the lie).
So what the heck does Brazil think they are doing to these innocent by birthright Americans??? Don't they know Americans are not just allowed to lie... but in fact perhaps we all are expected to lie... lie all the time, lie to anyone, lie no matter how important the truth might be to anyone much less the majority of folks who are stupid enough to be honest and even stupider to expect others to be honest.

Understand and I recall some of your stories (we traded several). I have also had several quite interesting experiences in Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Curacao and the Dominican Republic and... yes indeed, it is a different world (at least I can say this in the countries I listed...)
But I also have had many experiences in these same countries where North Americans made complete jerks of themselves and based on all the information flowing in on this particular situation, those of Brazil certainly have a beef because of the huge negative publicity the lies of these US swimmers created.
Yet again... hopefully folks can understand I was being sarcastic - attempting to make a point that lying, especially constant, straight faced pathological lying will not prevent you from becoming president of the United States.
And for those who might say, "tell us something new, Sam," yes... I agree its old news indeed yet, just because it happens, happens all the time does not mean our outrage should twain.

Ryan Lochte and Olympic swimmers 'had two women with them' claims taxi driver in Rio 2016 'robbery' saga twist
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/ryan-lochte-olympic-swimmers-had-8660852
and one of them took $1,000 out of an ATM earlier...
Could this lie have been motivated by an attempt to cover with a GF (or someone) back home as to why $1,000 was withdrawn from the ATM? One of the early lies was that they were forced to withdraw this money at gunpoint.
Does someone need $1,000 for four guys to just do some drinking? Haha... According to some of my friends who have spent time in Rio, life there can be "wild."

Ryan Lochte told the press that he was robbed at gunpoint in Brazil by fake policemen when in reality he has vandalized the bathroom of a Petrol Station in Brazil and when the private security guard of the Petrol Station held him and charged money to pay for the damages he caused he invented and reported a false crime.
Report a false crime is a crime in Brazil because you are diverting the attention and resources of the police that could be employed to solve real crimes.
Ryan Lochte just showed his real character when he thought their would be no punishment for his vandalism. He is simply not fit for a role model.

And now, being serious with regards to this whole mess... my opinions (even though they are all and only opinions).
First though - some more facts that have emerged. Guess how this whole fiasco started? Ryan Lochte told his mother "his story" (a story that was based on a few distorted facts yet which any listener would have concluded something totally false). She then went to the press and reported it as she heard it from her son which she believed. I suspect Lochte didn't even imagine that she might do that.
Yet, Lochte was simply doing what so, so, so many Americans do, do all the time, do as a simple matter of habit. He found himself in a situation where he could take a few facts, change the essence of those facts, then add all sorts of completely fictitious "facts" to create a story which he felt was better for his mother "to think was true" than simply telling her the real truth.
I know that to do this is not limited to "America" (which is actually a term which is perceived as offensive by many who are not US residents/citizens... another matter I will address at another time). But I am focusing on the US as this country is my home, my birthplace and most importantly, impacts the rest of the world in very significant ways.
This, my friends, is a pathology.
This is what so, so, so many people do to such a huge degree in the United States of America that when they are looking at two presidential candidates where one is an absolutely confirmed constant, repeat, pathological liar that this very fact means nothing to the masses who will vote for her anyway.
This thread is not about Hillary Clinton or meant to be anti-Hillary Clinton. In fact, I have learned my degree of naivety in this lifetime to be so great that despite my hopes a true change could take place, I am not holding my breath even if the all but impossible happens - that Trump is elected US president. But no matter how much Trump might bug me - I KNOW what the world will get if Hillary becomes the US president.
My opinion is that at least one of, if not, the most significant character defect exhibited by far too many Earth humans today is lying. And I haven't even touched the lies folks might be telling to themselves (but IMO that is for each individual to deal with).
I lived 12 years with someone I had to finally accept was a pathological liar. When I found myself having to make the decision to leave her for the sake of our three children... the very last thing I ever imagined I would ever be faced with, I went all the way to the brink of suicide and/or permanent insanity. The inner voice said, "It's simple math, Sam... you either keep going past the brink for her (one) or you break it off and save yourself for the sake of your sons (three)."
constant, repeating, pathological lying...
And here, the folks of the United States are about to elect the very most obvious professional pathological liar this country has ever known. Someone who just happens to be married to perhaps the second most obvious pathological liar (and this guy is tied with many other folks who have been our political leaders over the last several decades). But again... this one is by far the very worst - She lies all the time. When she is busted by the rare moments of confrontational integrity (missing from most of the mainstream press) she lies about the lies. And then she lies about lying about lying.
Folks in the US are probably getting exactly what they deserve because this same way of being is so pervasive among the folks here in the US that it just makes me sick.
Lochte better come clean and do the right thing - be honest about these lies, tell the truth, tell us all why he lied and most importantly... apologize sincerely especially to Brazil and then rest of the world and finally... live the rest of his life showing that he gets it (which is the actual true pathway of apology).

I heard of the whole story on radio this morning. Sorry for my misguided comments yesterday.
So, the arrest is in fact because Brazil's reputation was tarnished or something like this.
I have two comments:
1. Sam, you know as well as I do that American laws and values do not apply everywhere in the world. Being arrested for lying could be justifiable in some countries. American hegemony has not yet won the wholeplanet hopefully.
2. This athlete did not want to harm his own reputation and lied. Brazil does not want to have its reputation harmed and arrest him. Tell me, where is the difference? I fail to see it.
3. a little story of my own: I was with an American friend, years ago, in the truly beautiful Quebec City. We were in the lobby of its most gorgeous old hotel called Chateau Frontenac (it is like a castle) lurking around, when suddenly an group of American tourists got out the elevator and lurk around like us. THey were extremely loud, spreading all over with no discretion whatsoever, making noise and comments, chewing, eating while walking etc. To me, they were regular American tourists, being used to them. To my American friend, they were irrespectful, not wanting to comply with others cultural habits and plainly displeasing. He told me "I am so ashame right now of being American, are we always like this?" You know what my answer was - by the way, Chinese tourists groups are as bad, but not the French or British or Japanese. So.... I do understand Brazilians being upset - I have seen quite a few Brazilian teenagers groups travelling in Europe and they were respectful, surprisingly for teenagers. What about an American in his thirties!!!
4. I still love and enjoy my true American friends. Their buyancie has some lively interesting sides too.
By the way I LOVE YOUR LAST POST SAM. Quite on the spot, rightfully annoyed about lies and its impact on society - goes hand in hand wth secrecy in family, at work, in society, in governments, on the planet.
I had to leave a pathological narcissistic lier too for the sake of me and my child.

Hi Flash, in response...
I would imagine that in just about any country in the world that might actually operate under the ideal of free elections where voters get their information from an honest, free (with no agenda) press would never, ever elect a proven pathological liar. The US presents the illusion to their public that elected officials are "serving" them. If you are constantly lied to by those who you elect to "serve you," the only serving being done is that YOU are being served up to be eaten up.
Yet, I am finding here in the US (and I base this on the people I have spoken with save for a minority) that lying does not matter as to who they will vote for. That lying constantly, repeatedly, pathologically and to everyone all the time to their face will not cost that person votes if they run for president of the United States.
I used Lochte and the three buddies of his who went along (one finally told the truth) as simply a microcosmic example of the US macrocosm. The world is not electing a world leader who is a proven repeat pathological liar to be the World President. And perhaps there is no country in the world which maintains the ideal of free elections and a truly honest and free press.
1. Sam, you know as well as I do that American laws and values do not apply everywhere in the world. Being arrested for lying could be justifiable in some countries. American hegemony has not yet won the whole planet hopefully.
I do not understand why you made this statement... the post is about electing as a leader a proven pathological liar... a leader of one of the most powerful countries on Earth that significantly affects the lives of all living being of Earth as well as the Earth, itself. I emphasize that when a semi-closed society (as the US is) develops the habit of lying as a mainstay of operational behavior and has such impact as it does on the whole planet, then the whole planet has a problem.
Yet I never said that this same pattern is not found elsewhere on Earth. If asked, I would say based on my experience that it is a global epidemic. But I live here in a nation that is about to elect as their leader a human being who has proven over and over and over they lie, lie constantly, lie pathologically. And my opinion is that this is pathetic.
Perhaps equally pathetic is that I think my posts about it might actually make a tiny (positive) difference.
2. This athlete did not want to harm his own reputation and lied. Brazil does not want to have its reputation harmed and arrest him. Tell me, where is the difference? I fail to see it.
Reading this one has me wondering if, then, you think its no worse to lie and harm an already beleaguered nation's reputation (knowing Brazil is also part of BRICS - in fact a founding nation along with the other four countries) than it was for Brazil to do what it could under their laws and based on the facts and testimonies (one being one of the swimmers who finally listened to his conscience) for damage control?
I do see a difference... and that difference is that the former lied and the latter was honest. That is the point of the thread - lying... especially when it is endemic, pathological, accepted as the norm by a society.
As for the third comment, I cannot say I have great experience with most of the rest of the world yet I have lived in several other countries and visited a few dozen countries and my experience is that folks from the US are far less respectful than any other national culture I have encountered that is visiting a foreign country. I also have concluded some pretty sound reasons why too... reasons I have shared with both folks from the US as well as those from other lands who agreed and in fact helped me "see the light." Still, I am not US bashing... I am US exposing and hopefully folks that are from the US and who travel to other lands get a clue. Ohhh and I am no perfect angel either. I still have not developed the degree of patience I wish I had when it comes to dealing with some of the government paperwork institutions and when I go to a restaurant where they completely forget about you... as a few examples.
And indeed there are many wonderful folks from the US... folks who do have a clue that other cultures have their own protocols and that when someone is in someone else's land, it might be good to honor those protocols. Let me give you one example - when I visited Thailand, my friend there, pretty much a Thai CIA/mobster type taught me many of these protocols and one of them was that if ever I was seated and had my legs crossed, make sure I didn't have my foot pointed at anyone. Based on the folks I was visiting, that was some advice I took seriously (among the many other things he taught me).

I do not understand why you made this statement... the post is about electing as a leader a proven pathological liar...
my comment was just that different countries have different laws and ways of doing, that do not necessarily correspond to the American ways - ex: the value of saving face would be one, like Chinese have and respect and behave accordingly - or the religious values of not touching a goy for orthodox jews - or ..... you see what I mean. No more, no less. No judgment values on different values. Just a demand for openess when it comes for different countries laws and its people behavior. Frankly, this comment was quite superficial and intended to be.
But when i think of it, it may have to do with me being tired of being told how the world should be and how democracy is and what our values should be by the dominant nations, namely here USA. But truly, nothing more. Mostly when I see the blatant corruption of its government and the lies, as you say. And for me, Clinton is a huge lier and psycho, which should not ever be on a stage, less a world stage, but for me, Trump is not better, he is a pathological lier as well and definitely an huge inflated ego. When I see this, it is sooooo pathetic that I wonder why Americans are not waking up altogether and throwing that whole crap out the door.
Yet I never said that this same pattern is not found elsewhere on Earth. If asked, I would say based on my experience that it is a global epidemic. Exactly. Hence me equating the lies of the athlete to the saving face and arrest made by Brazil, they are both pathetic and based on fundamental "screwing" systems

I'm disgusted by the way they acted, just like the people of Brazil.... It's a disgrace to the USA.
I hope they do serve time in jail, teach those brats a lesson.

The sad part is that the rest of the world is ready to accept everything a young, american, white, talented olympian athlete says, especially when it's against a country like Brazilia Stereotypes rule. http://fusion.net/story/338121/ryan-lochte-lied-about-robbery-racist/?utm_campaign=ThisIsFusion&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=social

Actually, here in the US, at least on the news channel FOX NEWS as well as many websites that are US based, all that was initially reported was what Lochte told his mother. This was good because it made the claim public. So the Brazilian authorities began to investigate and as information was released from the Brazilian authorities, at least (again) FOX NEWS immediately reported the discrepancies in the stories as well as the commentators began to raise concerns the about the validity of the primary version that came from Lochte.
Soon after, videos started appearing (again on FOX NEWS along with several US based websites) which would lead viewers to the conclusion that the original story (and all related versions which still gave the impression these guys were somehow victims) were false.
As for the rest of the world and their media as well as the known heavily corrupted media in the US (besides FOX NEWS which seems far more honest, yet still "edited"), I don't know what they projected as I do not expose myself to these other media sources.

They are indicted for lying to the police.
No, they are indicted for (falsely) causing damage to what's left of the reputation of Rio and Brasil in general. ;)
Actually, the system in Brazil is a bit different. But the charge that was sent to the judge was essentially "filing a false police report." A judge then had to approve the charge for their process to continue. Instead an agreement was reached whereby the last swimmer still in Brazil at the time agreed to "donate" something close to $10,000 to a yet to be named charity in Brazil.

To file a false police report is "to lie."
This was the point of my thread. Lying.

Also I would like to mention that it would not be unreasonable speculation to point out that all the Brazil bashing done over the last several months might also be related to Brazil's participation in BRICS which would clearly be viewed negatively by the folks behind the "western world private banking system." These same folks have significant influence upon pretty much the entire western world mainstream media organizations and also have significant influence upon other western world "resources" - some of which may have played a role in the recent political misfortunes endured by Brazil.

Rio 2016: Speedo USA ends Ryan Lochte sponsorship
Reuters
By Subrat Patnaik
(Reuters) - Swimwear maker Speedo and luxury retailer Ralph Lauren Corp ended their sponsorship contracts with Ryan Lochte, days after the U.S. swimmer admitted to exaggerating his story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio during the Olympics.
The incident embarrassed the host city, angered the local police and government and dominated news coverage of South America's first Olympics, leading the U.S. Olympic Committee to issue an apology.
Lochte, a 12-time Olympic medallist, apologised on Saturday in an interview to Brazil's largest broadcaster, Globo TV. "I wasn't lying to a certain extent," he said. "I over-exaggerated what was happening to me."

Within hours of the Games coming to a close, Speedo USA issued a statement saying it would drop Lochte as one of its endorsers, while Ralph Lauren said it would not be renewing its contract with the swimmer.
Hair removal company Syneron Candela also ended its partnership with Lochte, four months after naming him its global brand ambassador for one of its products.
Nottingham, UK-based Speedo's U.S. unit said on Monday it would donate $50,000 of Lochte's fee to Save The Children, a global charity partner of Speedo.
Lochte said in an email that he respected Speedo's decision.
"I was immature and I made a stupid mistake. I'm human. I made a mistake and I definitely learned from this," Lochte said in an interview on the Today show.
"They (the people of Rio) put on a great Games ... And my immature, intoxicated behaviour tarnished that a little," Lochte said.
Another sponsor, Japanese mattress maker Airweave, had said on Friday that it would continue to monitor the investigation.
"As long as he is a respectable athlete, he will remain a US ambassador for Airweave as long as our partnership agreement remains effective," Motokuni Takaoka, CEO of Airweave, had said in an email. Airweave could not be reached for comment on Monday.
Ralph Lauren said its endorsement agreement with Lochte was specifically for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The company had taken down references to the gold medallist from its website last week.
Lochte, 32, won one gold medal at the Rio Olympics. He was the breakout star of the 2012 London Olympics, landing a short-lived reality TV series called "What Would Ryan Lochte Do?" and appearing, as himself, on top shows like "30 Rock" and "90210".

Uncle Sam to collect $800,000 by taxing Team USA medals

Now that the Olympics are over, Uncle Sam stands to collect $X in taxes from our
athletes who won medals. Most other countries waive any fees or taxes on Olympic
medals worn in patriotism, but the US considers all medal winnings - and the metal
they're even made of - to be 'regular income.' The Resident breaks it down. Like

EDIT: added 2016-08-20
This thread and my several first posts was "sarcasm." I am making sure folks who read this "get this" as I have noticed a few responses that appear "not to be getting it."
maybe there is after all... we shall see.
