Does anyone know why so many quakes are at 10 k ?

It's like an 'initial default setting'. As I call it. Unless the equipment is right over the top of it you have to look at readings from several locations. So they put it as at 10 km to indicate a shallow depth. They will usually have more accurate depth listed later. Corrections get made with deep quakes too but there you have more like 'ballpark figures'. I think there was a more detailed explanation put here before several times but can't find them. Hope this helps explain it a little.
