This is attached to the ceiling in a NY subway, a floor above where the trains come into and out of the station. Anyone know what this is or might be?
I haven't seen any light come out of it as many times as I walked past it, so my guess is it is emitting some kind of a signal/frequency.

The "Do not paint" seems to indicate some kind of smoke or particle detectors?

Interesting.

Could be some sort of detector Herve, but they usually have grills in them, or cut-slots in the main body. The look of it very much reminds me of marine radar...... Or a microwave transmitter, but it is impossible to tell from looks alone. Your thoughts, AwakenedWarrior, about it being some sort of transmitter may hold value.

... In case the paint has lead or other metals - it could block the signal
