A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Italy, with officials saying some buildings had collapsed.

The quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 76 km (47 miles) southeast of the city of Perugia, at the very shallow depth of 10km (six miles), the USGS said.

In Rome, some buildings shook for 20 seconds, according to La Repubblica newspaper.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.
However the USGS predicted these could be significant, based on data from previous quakes.

The prime minister's office said the government was in touch with regional heads of the civil protection agency.

The mayor of the town of Amatrice, Sergio Perozzi, told state-run RAI radio that buildings in the town centre had collapsed and the electricity had been cut.

The quake was initially reported as being magnitude 6.4. It was followed by several powerful aftershocks, La Repubblica newspaper reported.

Rome (AP) -- A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, with reports of damaged buildings and blackouts near the epicenter Rieti and residents fleeing their homes and running into the streets.

The quake struck just after 3:30 a.m. and was felt across a broad section of central Italy, including the capital Rome where people in homes in the historic center felt a long swaying followed by aftershocks.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center put the magnitude at 6.1 and said the epicenter was northeast of Rome, near Rieti. The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.2.

The mayor of Amatrice near Rieti, Sergio Perozzi, told state-run RAI radio that there were downed buildings in the city center and that the lights had gone out. He said he was unable to get in touch with emergency responders or reach the hospital.

"What can I tell you? It's a drama," he said.

In 2009, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the same region and killed more than 300 people. The earlier earthquake struck L'Aquila in central Italy, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of the latest quake.

Good morning, Avalon. I awoke to the news of this EQ... well, not really... I was awakened from my sleep around 3:50 am, as I am often to do when there are EQs involved, but I wasn't aware of its having happened nor did I think to check things out, so I went back to bed. I live about 6 hours from where this occured and did not consciously physically feel this.

An area of over 25 km is involved because of the EQ swarm, the first area, the town of Accumoli, (RI), hit with the 6.1 EQ is hard hit: buildings completely levelled, roads blocked with debris and bridges have fallen. Emergency workers are blocked in several places, people are literally walking out of the danger zones. At least 6 are already declared dead there. Many are still under debris of collapsed buildings. Many feared dead. Common people are digging through the rubble with their hands and manual means. There are helicopters in the air but not much help is getting through at this moment..

At Pescara del Tronto, there has been damage, material blocking roads there, too, and people are on foot. Edit: 5 accerted deaths now.

I haven't heard what damage was caused at Norcia where the second biggest EQ struck.

This looks as bad as the Aquilla quake.

I'll try to keep you informed.

An aerial view of the town of Amatrice, pop 2700 circa, shown on the RAI24 TV showed that about 80% of the town is just debris....

Emergency crews are only able to get there on foot because of access roads being blocked with material from the landslides and collapsed buildings.

A 6yo boy has been pulled from a fallen building. His parents and sibling are still unaccounted for.

The blood banks are calling for donors.

Most of the live streams are still showing commoners/volunteers doing most of the rescue work.

It is now being said that this EQ is worse than the one in Aquilla in 2009.

According to the INGV there have been more than 120 EQs from 2M to +4M since the 6.1 EQ early this AM (including the area of Perugia which is 140km NW). There appears not to have been any warning beforehand that this would have happened, that is, no swarming before the big one.

A convoy of rescue workers are on their way from Genova and others from Perugia and Aquila have arrived via helicopter to help.

Getting to the area is difficult. A super highway tunnel has collapsed and another tunnel has lesions and has been closed to traffic. Crews are working to get the roads free of travelers stuck along the way as well as free of debris. The injured are being transported by helicopter. Community solidarity is the greatest force for now.

Several people have been pulled from the rubble, but many are still unacounted for, many in each town.

Sismologists are warning of the possibile risk of a second strong EQ building...

....

I have to go now but I'll be back online later... as with so many other dramatic goings-ons, my thoughts are heavy yet full of hope...

Back... as expected the tolls are increasing.

RAINews is saying 63 dead, 86 injured and hundreds still unaccounted for... Many of the missing are vacationers, not perminent residents. For exmple, one small town usually has only 700 residents but in this period of summer vacations, could have had as many as 2000 extra persons on their territory.

The INVG has reported as of noon 160 aftershocks: 59 from 3-4M, 5 from 4-5M and the one at Norcia 5.4M . At 1:40pm, just as I was returning home, there was another EQ 4.9M. https://ingvterremoti.wordpress.com/2016/08/24/sequenza-sismica-tra-le-province-di-rieti-perugia-ascoli-piceno-laquila-e-teramo-aggiornamento-delle-ore-12-00/

The town of Illica has not yet been reached by Emergency Workers. A short video has been placed on FB, desperate and hurt people, others angry and some obviously traumatized, demanding/begging for someone to come help.

There are a few before and after picts of some of the towns on The Guardian:

Too much to summarize here (and it bit off-topic maybe).

I do hope your friend is ok.

RAINews24 has announced that the Italian military ( I guess all the police here is considered military, especially Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza Fiame Gialle and as far as I know, the Civil Defense is NOT considered military) has finally arrived at Illica... The folks there had already recuperated 30 deceased...

The toll keeps climbing... 3 nuns and 5 elderly are still missing (not yet recuped) at a monastery/orphanage that crumbled... luckily, the children weren't there at this time.

Yes, I can now confirm that 650 military men have been sent to the area with heavy machines and tech to help the Civil Defense search for the missing and to construct temporary housing (tents) for the thousands who are now homeless. It gets cold during the night up in the mountains.... and there are a lot of elderly there who have lost everything, still sitting outside in pjs and blankets.

About 17 additional squads of the State Police ( those who usually do traffic duty and most crime cases) are on duty in the whole region to deter robbers and thieves.

One of the biggest problems that they are mentioning now is the lack of food and electricity and natural gas leaks (thanks to Berlů, almost all of Italy has been "upgraded" to using the gas lines).

Good Morning, Avalon. Here's an update from an Italian Civil Protection briefing via RAINEws24 as of this morning 7am:

Search for victims of the EQ continued during the night, especially trying to capture sounds or crys for help from the rubble of collapsed buildings. Three more people were extracted alive and several presences, presumably deceased, have been signaled by the search dogs.

There are 30 Canine Search and Rescue squads present on the territory. 1000 police, 400 military, 880 firemen rescue personnel, 3000 volunteers who operate in rescue operations (Italian Red Cross, Esercito Alpini, radio communications, etc.) and accogliance (Caritas, social servies, medical services, food services, transport, telecommunications et al).

460 persons are recovered in hospital, innumerable injured have been treated and released, 247 is the official number of deceased so far. Unfortunately, many of the people rescued have died afterwards. 100s are still missing. Numerous dogs have been rescued from the rubble, too.

The search continues... as well as the quakes: there have been over 460 registered since the first. The strongest EQ in the last few hours was a 4.5M around 5am this morning. Additional buildings have fallen or damaged structures have deteriorated further because of the continuing tremors.

Italy earthquake: Death toll passes 240 as rescue efforts continue

The death toll in the Italian earthquake stands at 241 as rescuers continue efforts
to find survivors. Dozens of people are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice,
Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy.

There have been hundreds of aftershocks since the quake struck, hampering relief
efforts and damaging already unstable buildings.More than 4,300 rescuers are
using heavy machinery and their bare hands.Rescuers have advised journalists and
bystanders to leave Amatrice urgently, as "the town is crumbling", the BBC's Jenny
Hill says.Another powerful aftershock struck the town on Thursday afternoon,
sending a huge dust cloud into the air.

Situation Update via RAINews24 Civil Protection announcement as of 6pm this evening:

245 persons have been extracted alive.
250 persons deceased confirmed.
365 injured and hospitalized.

32 persons were registered patrons at the Roma Hotel which has finally been reached and is being searched. 20 persons were able to escape the collapse, 6 have been found dead in the rubble, 6 are still missing.

It is still unsure how many people were originally in the area at the time of the quake being that these towns' population generally increases 100% during the summer months with vacationers. There are still about 100 persons registered as unaccounted for.

During the quake this afternoon at 2:44pm many damaged buildings contined to deconstruct, ufortunately adding more rubble to yet unchesked areas.

Good afternoon, Avalon.

Another update:

Another quake this mornng at 4:26 am, 4.8 Mag struck causing the partial collapse of a damaged bridge along the main road into Amatrice. Now the entrance and exit is limited being that there is a secondary via extra-urban through rough and uncultured terrain but it is very long and winding through hills and gullies making the going difficult for the rescue vehicles. Military Engineers are working on temporarily securing what remains of the bridge. Maybe it will be operable in the next few days. This unwanted inconvienience has also isolated the hundreds of persons in the temporary tent-housing camp and as well as the volunteers and rescuers who were staying there, too.

The Civil Defence is asking to halt all speditions of donations of food and clothing as they now have more than they actually need. Instead they are asking for bedding, blankets, jackets and sleeping bags.

New totals: 268 deceased, 238 extracted alive, (the first two numbers vary from report to report because some of the victims extracted alive have since then died), 387 injured and hospitalized, 15 known missing.

According to geologists and Satelite, the land mass at Accumoli, RI, one of the towns devastated by the EQ is now lower by 20cm.

The quake in Aquila in 2009, land mass had sunk an average of 50cm.

At last, as much has been gossiped about on the news but nothing had been confirmed, the data on non-italian citizens is finally coming out:

3 UK citizens lost their lives in the EQ.

Italy earthquake: Boy, 14, among three UK deaths

From the section UK

A 14-year-old boy from London was among three Britons killed in Wednesday's earthquake in central Italy.

Marcos Burnett was on holiday with his parents and sister when the quake hit.

Will Henniker-Gotley, 55, and his wife Maria, 51, from Stockwell in London, also died.

It is understood both families were staying in the same property in the town of Amatrice, where emergency teams are continuing to search for survivors. At least 268 people lost their lives.

Marcos Burnett's parents suffered from minor injuries and are being treated in hospital in Italy.

A statement from the Foreign Office said: "It is with sadness that we can confirm the deaths of Maria, 51, and Will, 55, Henniker-Gotley and Marcos Burnett, 14, in the earthquake in Amatrice, Italy on 24 August.

"The families have paid tribute to the tireless work of the Italian rescue workers and hospital staff and expressed their gratitude for the love and support they have received from the Italian people."

Just to top off this thread, since I kind of left things dangling, here are the latest, and maybe final, numbers for this sad human drama:

From the 24th of August EQ, there have been over 3900 tremors recorded. Most of the once recorded in the past 48 hours have not been greater than 3 mag Richter.

A total of 293 have died. More bodies may still be located in the rubble as clean-up proceeds.

Six persons are still missing.

Over 2900 are presently living in the 3 tent towns provided by the Red Cross-Italian military et al. Much discussion is going on about what to do for the now homeless people, as autumn is upon us and temperatures are cooling, and soon these people will need a better choice of long-term temporary dwellings.

Although the news channels are still primarily focused on this sad disaster and all of the "what now?" and "who's fault is it" discussion, it has already pretty much passed into the "to forget" archives for most folks not directly involved.... tipically... and sadly so.

Unless something new evolves... I guess that's about it.
