Hi All,
I wanted to bring up this video as I'm not sure it has been shown here yet. This is an elderly man who lives on his property which is paid off completely without utilities and the government's going to take his land because he is living in what they call "unsanitary" conditions.

Now, I don't know how much truth there is in their claim, but I submit that it is mostly irrelevant unless they can demonstrate that he is going to cause a health epidemic.
Here are some of the issues/trends I see here:
- If he is causing a health nuisance for himself, who are they to say how he choose to live on his own property in the middle of nowhere?
- He obviously pays no utility bills and thus no taxes for the utility bills.
- He is also a non-conformist and it appears they are targeting him for this reason.
My thoughts are that anyone who can live a happy life in harmony with the land and off the grid ought to get a good deal of respect as he is not polluting, barely using any energy resources at all, is not dependent on the government for a handout, and has found a peaceful way to escape the system.
Further, city and state governments have gone crazy lately with less tax revenue, and many are looking for unique new ways to collect revenue. Where I live, land is available for sale, but nobody can get approved for building permits due to a water moratorium. Of course, they don't leave you alone if you dig your own well, they still won't let you build. They also won't let you go off-grid here. If you want to be off the grid on your house, you still need to pay for the gas and electric hookup and the associated taxes on your bill (never mind that you won't be using any of their energy). And, if you want to run solar panels, you need to have a permit and pay taxes on the energy you are generating by yourself.
This whole double-talk of going green and then punishing people who really do it needs to stop. This needs to be recognized for what it is: a ploy by the system to take and use more of our money and energy in order to prop up the system's needs over our own.
