Considering the distance, that was a bit too close for comfort!
I'm here - miles away! (red circle) - Gawd knows what it felt like there - checking the News stations now...

Yah it's popping up on SKY News but it's very early in the morning here; 05:14 am. Most Kiwi's tucked in bed. :)
It was reasonably deep - we had a 5.7M about 19 hrs ago in the same place - always a bit worrying when they get bigger tho! ;)

Another 6.2M, 2 mins ago but much shallower @ 20km deep

Magnitude 7.1 earthquake off East Coast shakes North Island

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11702954

(more at link)

Civil Defence officials are reviewing a tsunami warning following a 7.1 quake that shook North Island this morning.

The quake hit at 4.37am, around 100km northeast of the East Cape settlement of Te Araroa, at a depth of 55km.

Civil Defence tweeted that scientific advisors were currently meeting.

But the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says there's no tsunami threat, although a 21-centimetre high wave was measured...

(Gawd, according to this, they even felt it in Auckland & Wellington!)

Update before I sign off;

Civil Defence are taking it seriously and warning people that the danger is not over due to continuing (and quite strong) aftershocks - situation considered "unstable"

Warning in place for the next 12 hours+ for the whole East coast of the Nth Island and top of the South Island.

30 cm waves have hit East cape & as far as Gt Barrier Island
Some houses near the affected area coast are being evacuated
Stay of East coast Beaches (and no Tsunami sightseeing!)
Stay tuned for update alerts
High probability of more quakes
