View Full Version : Southern California Desalinization Plant Water Dissolving Pipes?

I wonder how many of you local Californians have been smelling strong Calcium or lime in your water since the Desalinization Plant came online and pumping water through our pipes...

I have replaced 2 fridge filters in 3 weeks, the water smells, we have never had this before.

I'm concerned we are going to have another Michigan incident right here in Southern California.

Owned by an Israeli company that handles the world's largest plants, these aren't rookies.

I was wondering what the "deal" was... (haha..)

You should send your water off to get tested.. I bet there's a local place that could do it for you.

Rocky, there's another area here in northern Michigan by one of the closed air force bases that you can't drink the water either and its all well water in that area. I was actually in a huge holding tank for water that was being constructed 15 years ago. The pipeline that fed that tank was 2 miles out in lake Huron. Tank was 40 feet high or maybe higher. Wonder if there is a supplemental filter for your house. Willaim shatner came up with the idea of a water pipeline from Canada to feed California. That is not to far out there of an idea.

I suggest send your water samples for assessment to non US laboratory.

Also before making claims, test the water from your neighbours and across the block.

Good luck.

They tried that many years ago (1991) with their northern USA neighbors and Canada, didn't get much traction. It was because of cost and environmental issues then and would be even a larger issue today. At this point it's just a pipe dream.

I live in Northern CA and Home Depot is doing free water testing. They had envelopes by the door that are postage paid and have a small plastic vile inside. I assume they are hoping your waters bad and thus they can sell you a purification system. Whatever their motives are the test is free.

I spent a short stint of my life selling portable, reverse-osmosis water purifiers in Las Vegas and southern California a number of years ago. I always carried with me a small water testing gadget that made many sales when I could show people how their water actually tested on the spot coming from their own tap. The Las Vegas water -- and a large portion of the southern California water -- comes from the Colorado River. It is pure mountain snow-melt that travels hundreds of miles tumbling over rocks, with the result that by the time that river water gets to a residential tap, the test meter read-out shows three to four thousand parts per million of "dissolved solids" ie; minerals of all types. The EPA maximum for safe drinking water was, at that time, 700 parts per million dissolved solids. A reverse-osmosis water purifier removes up to 98% of all mineral and chemical content -- certainly the best kind to install in your residence. It has certain drawbacks, however. It requires a constant, though slight, flow of water over the outer portion of the "membrane" portion of the system in order to carry away the "waste" minerals and chemicals; and the membrane has to be changed periodically -- like perhaps once or twice a year depending on use. At present I purchase 5-gallon bottles of reverse-osmosis purified water for our drinking water, and then add several teaspoons of "Concentrace" trace mineral supplement (from Health Food stores or places like Swanson Vitamins) to provide the essential trace minerals in trace quantities. So much for your drinking water.

When it comes to filtering high calcium levels from your water supply, or the smell of sulphur, and iron bacteria, you may want to call in a professional water treatment company for an analysis -- which can end up being quite expensive using their special equipment and required special supplies -- or you can just put up with the odor -- or experiment with a less expensive charcoal filter which may do the job of removing odors. Whatever you do, you're better off using R/O purified water (with trace minerals added) for your own health (and your small animals) for the water you drink.

I drink only distilled water I make from my Meaghome water distiller. This way I don't have to worry about the quality of the local water supply.

I lived in South Mission for 3 years and the water has always sucked. The best thing about SD is the Mex food and the parties. UCSD.

Doctors have told me it will leach minerals out of your body, to never drink Distilled water without reinstalling the essential minerals/ vitamins first.

I am sure water pipelines would be far more welcome out of Canada than their oil...

Michigan has an oil investment fund that all politicians are a part of. They are getting paid by other states to take fracking waste, and pump it into the ground. Seepage happened from one of the injection wells, the river carrying it down to where it was sucked up for the public, add some chemicals and goals ready to drink...

Dudes, it melted lead pipes, carrying drinking water...

Just drink distilled water, that's what your kidneys produce

you get your minerals (in bio available form) from vegetables (i.e. forget about adding minerals in inorganic form just eat/juice vegetables)

Durastill is a good brand
