I went to a private boarding high school in the 1970s, and one of my classmates built and exploded a pipe bomb late at night. Most of us slept through it and when we heard about it the next day, we spent about 10 minutes discussing the incident and the student who was expelled. We quickly forgot about him and the bomb. I doubt that many of us remembered to tell our parents and anyone outside of the campus. I don't even think the local police knew. I guess it was under a thousand people who heard about it.

Today a pipe bomb goes off and it makes the news for hundreds of millions around the earth. The world must hear about this and react with paranoia, clamor for increased surveillance and make military preparations for Armageddon.

On Saturday September 17th – three separate attacks rocked the United States of America.

New Jersey: An explosion from a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in a garbage can sparked the cancellation of the Seaside Semper Five 5k Marine Corps charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey on Saturday morning. Three additional pipe-bomb type devices were also found near the boardwalk.

Minnesota: Eight people were injured at a St Cloud, Minnesota shopping mall during a stabbing spree by a man armed with a knife and dressed in a private security uniform.

This is the part that gets me with the media report of: The response of candidates is get tougher or make sure it's a terrorist attack or "we want to know the why of it." To avoid full on detection one would want to use the least force that is necessary to get the job done. The bigger the events the more likely the position of the enemy is revealed. Example: The footprint of cannon fire or a missile launch is much bigger then that from a rifle or pipe bomb.
