The founder of whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been granted bail in London on conditions including cash guarantees of £240,000.
But he will remain in prison pending an appeal against the bail decision, which has been lodged by Swedish prosecutors.
His lawyer Mark Stephens said the case was turning into a "show trial".
Mr Assange is fighting extradition to Sweden, accused of sexually assaulting two women. He denies the charges, and says they are politically motivated.
A large crowd including demonstrators, reporters and a number of Mr Assange's high-profile supporters gathered outside City of Westminster Magistrates' Court for the bail hearing on Tuesday.

Sweden To Appeal WikiLeaks Founder's Bail
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been granted bail but is facing another 48 hours in jail as Swedish authorities have appealed the decision.
Assange appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court for a fresh bail appeal against an extradition bid by Sweden over rape allegations, which he denied.
But after being granted bail Assange must now stay in custody for another two days during the Swedish appeal.
"They want to put Mr Assange through more hurdles and expense," Assange's lawyer, Mark Stephens told reporters outside court.
"This is really turning into a show trial and we will be in court again with the next 48 hours," Mr Stephens said.

Doesn't this spectacle ring a bell? Remember a few years ago when the mainstream babble box was so desparate for a distracting story that they revived the Jon Benet Ramsey Murder case? Then for those of a bent mind and morbid curiosity (including me I will admit) we were treated to the ridiculous spectacle of the District Attorney of Boulder Colorado being transformed overnight into a media darling, her frumpy hairdo suddenly replaced with something out of Vogue..............as she created an arrest warrant and worked with the Federal Govt. to extradite a mixed up kook from Indonesia who was VAGUELY SUSPECTED of having something to do with the Ramsey murder based on very thin "evidence"...............then we watched the kook being escourted, presumably by Federal Marshalls and who knows who (secret agents?) from Indonesia back to the US to face...............face what???? Interesting how the DA of Boulder County and Indonesian Officials bent over backwards to accommodate a US-orchestrated propaganda exercise not based on any pursuit of justice in the still unsolved Ramsey case at all, but rather to create a media extravaganza to distract the population from real issues going on at the time. Similarly Swedish authorities are bending over backwards to accommodate the US government in pursuing these ridiculous sex crime charges, with the collaboration of the British Government.
This, in combination with the highly suspicious timing of the "terror attack" in Sweden, designed to remind us that the enemies of liberty are everywhere, in particular that the greatest enemies of liberty are THOSE WHO ATTEMPT TO BRING THE TRUTH FORWARD.
George Orwell would be astonished!

quote from the guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/libertycentral/2010/dec/14/julian-assange-european-arrest-warrant
>This month I watched proceedings in Westminster magistrates' court as Jacek Jaskolski, a disabled 58-year-old science teacher, fought an EAW issued against him by his native Poland. Jaskolski – also the primary carer for his disabled wife – has been in the UK since 2004. His crime? Ten years ago, when he still lived in Poland, Jaskolski went over his bank overdraft limit.<
Great times indeed.
Also 'interesting' in this regard:
The "EEW" - go here and just read the first sentence of the 'summary' (that should suffice): http://europa.eu/legislation_summaries/justice_freedom_security/judicial_cooperation_in_criminal_matters/jl0015_en.htm

"JULIA Gillard is confronting a growing backlash within her own party, with more Labor MPs yesterday attacking the Prime Minister's language and declaring their support for WikiLeaks's founder Julian Assange and free speech.
Ms Gillard said the latest WikiLeaks information dump was based on an illegal act, but Canberra has since insisted that was a reference to the original theft of the material by a junior US serviceman rather than any action by Mr Assange.
However, Labor Left MP Maria Vamvakinou from Melbourne yesterday told The Australian the government had read the public mood wrongly on the issue and said she supported the release of the classified material.

i think this is refered to as getting a taste of her own medicine after what was done to Rudd not that long ago
"Mr Rudd has consistently taken a different line to Ms Gillard and Mr McClelland.

Why I'm Posting Bail for Julian Assange: A Letter from Michael Moore
http://htmlimg3.scribdassets.com/8lr16rqi2osjh34/images/1-54043df03d.png
Friends,
Yesterday, in the Westminster Magistrates Court in London, the lawyers for WikiLeaksco-founder Julian Assange presented to the judge a document from me stating that I haveput up $20,000 of my own money to help bail Mr. Assange out of jail.
Furthermore, I am publicly offering the assistance of my website, my servers, my domainnames and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues itswork to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name andwith our tax dollars.
We were taken to war in Iraq on a lie. Hundreds of thousands are now dead. Just imagineif the men who planned this war crime back in 2002 had had a WikiLeaks to deal with. They might not have been able to pull it off. The only reason they thought they could getaway with it was because they had a guaranteed cloak of secrecy. That guarantee has now been ripped from them, and I hope they are never able to operate in secret again.

No surprise any government agency lying........................pressure being put on Merrie Olde England by the usual suspects. Now if a normal citizen lied it could be construed as perjury or worse..............................

Sending positive energy Julian's way. I hate that he's become the "face" of wikileaks but I believe that he's a highly intelligent man in the mold of Gary McKinnon and like Gary, Julian must be protected at all costs.

Yes , Julians person mut be protected, as well as his integrity, his honor, hid spirit.
Jail is not easy in any situation..
And i feel the "attacks" on what he says/does or did...will only increase.
Staying strong and focused will be his biggest challenges.
My heart to his, may the emptiness around him be filled with light.
