ASGARDIA: THE FIRST SPACE NATION

The first SPACE NATION is revealed: 'Asgardia' will defend the Earth against deadly
attacks from asteroids - and now you can sign up to be a citizen. It might seem like an
idea taken straight out of science fiction, but a 'space nation' could soon become a
reality. At least, that is if plans developed by an international group of scientists,
announced today, go ahead. The team has announced it will kick-start the independent
nation, which it has dubbed Asgardia, by launching a satellite next year.

Scientists plan to create 'Asgardia' nation state in space

Asgardia would be a new nation state in space
A group of scientists is launching what they say will be a new pacifist nation-state in
space.Asgardia "will become a place in orbit which is truly 'no man's land'," its website
says. The new "nation" aims to launch its first satellite late next year and hopes to one
day be recognised by the UN.But some experts have cast doubt on the viability of the
plan, given international law prohibits national sovereignty claims in outer space.
"Citizens" of Asgardia, who will be scrutinised before admission, will eventually obtain
passports, says Lena de Winne, a senior member of the project team who worked for
the European Space Agency for 15 years.
http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/1442F/production/_91919928_space2.png
Thousands of people have already signed up to 'join' the state
"Clearly it's difficult to wrap your head around the concept [of] how can you be a citizen
of something you cannot put your foot on," she told the BBC."But I'm a citizen of the
Netherlands and I'm now in Paris… There is nothing unusual about it if you are a citizen
of a land where you don't live and where you don't go."The project is being directed by
the Vienna-based Aerospace International Research Center, a private company founded
by Russian scientist and businessman Dr Igor Ashurbeiyli.
He joked to reporters in Paris at an event announcing the project that he would not be
surprised if the media labelled him a "crazy Russian rocket scientist" talking "utter
nonsense".Its website says the new nation, the name of which derives from a city in the
sky in Norse mythology, "will offer an independent platform free from the constraint of a
land-based country's laws".The group says it will open up new opportunities in space for
commerce, science and "peoples of all countries on earth".
Crowdfunded space state
Competitions are being held to decide a national anthem and flag design.
Professor Sa'id Mosteshar, director of the London Institute of Space Policy and Law, cast
doubt on the idea that Asgardia would be recognised under international law."The Outer
Space Treaty… accepted by everybody says very clearly that no part of outer space can
be appropriated by any state," he said.Given Asgardia will not be associated with a self-
governing territory, with its 'citizens' remaining on earth, its prospects for recognition
are slim, he added. The project is being funded personally by Dr Ashurbeiyli at present,
but the group have announced they will seek crowdfunding.
Already more than 50,000 people have applied to 'join' the state online.
This crowdfunding aspect suggests the group's founders "don't have any real credible
business plan", Professor Mosteshar said.On the legal aspects, Dr Ashurbeiyli says he
wants to create a "new judicial reality in space".
"The project is creating a new framework for ownership and nationhood in space, which
will adapt current outer space laws governing responsibility, private ownership and
enterprise so they are fit for purpose in the new era of space exploration," a statement said.

US to work with private firms on Mars plan

Artist's impression: When will the first astronaut set foot on Mars?
President Barack Obama says the US will work with private companies on its plan to
send humans to Mars in the 2030s.President Obama announced his proposals for a
crewed mission to the Red Planet in 2010.But Nasa's plan to realise this presidential
vision has been broadly criticised, particularly by Congress. In an article, President
Obama pledged to work with private companies to "to build new habitats that can
sustain and transport astronauts".
"We have set a clear goal vital to the next chapter of America's story in space: sending
humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth, with the ultimate ambition
to one day remain there for an extended time," Obama said in an opinion piece for CNN.
Uncertainty ahead for US 'Mars ship'
The comments are not entirely surprising: Nasa is already working closely with the private
sector to resupply the International Space Station. And many private space firms - particularly
SpaceX, whose Dragon capsule delivers cargo to the ISS - have made no secret of their
ambitions to explore Mars.Last month, Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX, outlined his proposal
for a permanent base on Earth's smaller, colder neighbour.Reaction to this plan was mixed:
some space experts criticised the plan as unrealistic, while others praised Mr Musk for outlining
a detailed - and audacious - architecture for getting to Mars.

Media captionEntrepreneur Elon Musk has outlined his vision for getting to Mars.
The absence of detail is something that has cropped up as a recurrent criticism of Nasa's own
initiative, named "Journey to Mars" - a response to the Red Planet vision announced by President
Obama six years ago.Earlier this year, members of Congress and expert witnesses claimed the
US space agency lacked a clear road map for Mars and that the plan needed achievable milestones
to succeed. However, this has apparently not dented President Obama's enthusiasm for expeditions
to the Red Planet. In his opinion piece, he said: "We have set a clear goal vital to the next chapter
of America's story in space: sending humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth,
with the ultimate ambition to one day remain there for an extended time.
"Getting to Mars will require continued cooperation between government and private innovators, and
we're already well on our way."He said that he would be convening leading scientists, engineers and
innovators in Pittsburgh this week to "dream up ways to build on our progress and find the next frontiers".

Yes it's just the Eye of Horus, nothing to see here. And what does it say about these first 100,000 sign-ups if they're willing to run away from a fractured planet? Thanks guys, cu later.
Maybe they crave healing. OK, no problem. Then release the healing technology on Earth now, so everyone can benefit. If they don't have healing tech up there, then these 100,000 star warriors can add osteoporosis and bone disease to their list of ailments. Who'd want to be stuck on a rotating disc with 100,000 flatulent cowards?

Nano alloy powders in specific sizes of particles and much more (which I'm not currently willing to 'splain, gotta keep something of it for myself), created at the raw cost of the metals themselves. which drops the manufacturing costs of such required alloys by a 20:1 to 100:1 price/cost of what is currently considered to be possible. to create alloys with properties that no-one even knows are yet possible. For that, what is required ....is an open ended unknown in the world of structural materials, one built out of pure potential and imagining. And that is what the nano-alloy creation technique brings to the table.
I brought a minimum 2 magnitude change to the scientific and manufacturing area that is required ----for this sort of 'movement off the planet' to go forward. The structural advantages are probably more useful on/in the known habitat, when attention is turned back to the earth.

I am very saddened to read this post....it is in my world an end to a belief of a greater purpose which I have held dear to my being for some time.
I feel you lake - it reminds me of what a friend told me on the phone the other day - that we humans will eventually be replaced by a superior cyborg race that is currently being created. He sounded excited about it, saying that they would be far superior to us humans, and that they would be more enlightened in some way. I was totally shocked. I felt like I had just entered the twilight zone. I said, well sorry but I just can't believe that. And he said well you'll believe it when you see it. So I had to say - oh and how can you be so sure it is going to happen? I just could not understand why he considered this development a good thing!
And I can relate to this feeling of sadness - like, wait a second. The earth is my home. There is a lot of pain and suffering that has taken place here, which I do not consider to be from this planet, and I do not think it necessary or desirable to leave one trashed place to go and trash another. I want to stand ground and learn how to heal myself and others, to heal the planet. I love my mother earth. I am, after all, part nature spirit. In my opinion, the fae are the original indigenous peoples of this planet - all humans are aliens to the earth (missing link anybody?)
I feel like I am dawning on a realization here. And it seems to me that, as creations from a source that some of us have grown to consider pure love, we are perfect creations. How do perfect creations create pain and suffering? This question has been bothering me for some time now, and the explanations I have heard are either too esoteric and vague, or sound just plain wrong to me. I have just recently discovered a new line of theory that is beginning to make more sense to me. Perhaps the pain and suffering in this world, (albeit something that has been taught to us and put upon us by races that wish to control and manipulate us) come from a source that was NOT created by the source of pure love that we were? I suspect that this source is like a cyborg race or collective (HEY THE BORG - ALA Star Trek). I was thinking, if the race that created these cyborg were not ready to advance to the creation level of intelligent design, that their creations ran amok and ended up taking over. Without the same connection to source as their creators (being somehow missing the magic ingredient that a creator with the capacity for designing perfect beings alone can bestow), they began killing and exercising their wills with cold efficiency. And it is this cold efficiency that we consider "evil" - and which has led to all kinds of manipulations of our psyche via mind control technologies and thought programming passed down culturally.
But then of course my next question to myself would be - how would perfect creations create something that gets to be so horribly out of control? How would they be ALLOWED to create something that can run amok - taking over civilizations on countless worlds - infecting them, decimating them, enslaving them? Unless it is possible that there are multiple sources of creation - and that some sources are "evil" while others operate on the level of "pure love." If there is one source from which all of these other sources come from, I suspect that source would be neutral, as opposed to being something of pure love or pure evil. I do think the idea of multiple sources of creation makes a lot of sense to me - since we all as individuals are ALSO sources of creation - we all create every day.
So where does that duality come from? Not sure.
This is just my latest philosophical ramblings, for whatever it's worth.
BTW lake - I think your avatar is hilarious!

"Scientists have launched the first new space nation. And anyone can become a citizen of it.
The new space nation of Asgardia hopes to save the human race twice over. First, it will
look to protect it from warfare in space; and second it will try and keep humanity safe
from the dangers coming from outside of atmosphere, protecting us from threats like space
debris and asteroid collisions. Those behind Asgardia hope that creating the country is the
first step of a new era in the space age. And they intend to start that by sending rockets
into the sky.The country will send its first satellite into space in 2017. From there, Agardia
hopes to “open up access to space for commerce, science and peoples of all countries on earth”.”*

I just ran up on this... thought I'd add it on to the discussion:
Asgardia: The (Russian) Space Nation
By
transients.info -
31 October, 2016
Written by Kim Peart. First published on The Tasmanian Times.
If I were to tell you that a Russian citizen, who was until 2011 the chief designer of some of Russia’s most powerful weapons, is now leading the charge to create a space nation, what would you wonder? [1]
Then, what if I were to tell you that in 2014 Dr Ashurbeyli was quoted in a Russian publication as saying, “We stand idle, bound by international treaties about a ‘peaceful space’ which no one observes, except for us. The militarization of space is inevitable. What’s more, it is vitally needed.” [2]
So who is the “we” and the “us” in that statement, for a citizen of the Russian Federation?
Dr Ashurbeyli is described as, “one of Russia’s foremost aerospace defence entrepreneurs and philanthropists,” who recently set up a “Maltese base for his Russian holding company Socium, which has on its payroll over 10,000 employees worldwide.” [3]
Socium was founded in 1988, and Dr Ashurbeyli moved to Moscow in 1990, where he became the CEO of SPA Almaz, until resigning in 2011, which designed and is producing the S-500 missile system. [4]
Has Dr Ashurbeyli transformed into a global citizen and peace worker, or does he remain a loyal Russian, and is he on a mission from the Kremlin?
IS SPACE TERRA NULLIUS?
When the United States won the Moon Race in 1969, they claimed the high ground in the Cold War, but after 1972 and with no Russian competition, US human space activity became limited to low Earth orbit.
When the Princeton physics professor, Gerard K O’Neill [5], proposed a plan for space settlement in the early 1970s, 15,000 would-be space settlers responded, but the US had no further interest in serious space development, and that which could have happened, did not.
In the years that followed, talk of colonising Mars raised global interest and action, as with the plans of Elon Musk to launch flights to the red planet for would-be Martians. [6]
Colonists will pay to go to Mars and survive there, and survive they must, or fail in the harsh environment, where no rescue can be expected from Earth.
ike the Viking Greenland colony, they will learn to adapt, or they will perish, which is what happened to the Vikings in Greenland when conditions became too harsh.
It would be a far safer path to launch space settlement closer to Earth and make it work near home, before going to Mars.
ASGARDIA
On October 12th the successful Russian business man, with global connections and 10,000 employees, who had led the work on Russian missile systems, declared a peaceful future for space with the launch of Asgardia and invited anyone on Earth who would like to, to declare their interest in becoming a citizen of the new space nation. [7]
The level of frustration on Earth in the lack of a space settlement option must be pretty high, as over 514,000 would-be Asgardians have declared an interest, and the number keeps going up.
Right now the Asgardia space nation exists mainly as a number of FaceBook pages, where there is chatter about establishing a land base on Earth, or building a floating island in the ocean.
Would Australia have any islands for sale, south of Melbourne?
HOW FAR EAST IS IT?
That a citizen of Russia with significant connections and background in Russia should launch the founding of a space nation, with clearly many Russian friends involved, should we wonder about what is going on?
In an earlier article I raised the question of what will Russia do next, following the taking of Crimea and the civil war in Ukraine. [8]
Left weakened after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia has been reasserting itself and growing in strength.
At the same time we have watched China’s bold expansion into the South China Sea, and apparently, completely successfully.
If the East can create a global movement for settlement in orbital habitats, as with Asgardia, they will control who gets to go there.
And once established in space, built on global good will for new opportunities, the new lands in space may be declared as part of the Russian Federation.
New tricks are being invented in the bag and pulled out by the crafty Russians, as with Crimea, and the tragedy west of Moscow, and in Syria, which is far from over.
Anyone looking at the Asgardia website can see that the citizens of 244 nations have expressed an interest in being part of Asgardia, including 9,091 Australians.
The highest number wishing to leave Earth come from China, with 127,575 citizens seeking access to space, with the next highest being the US at 54,297.
If Asgardia falls over, China may decide that this is a really good idea, or is that the plan, for Russia, China and associates to build lands for the East in space?
If that is the secret plan and it works, human survival may be improved in the Universe, but history will wonder how and why the World’s leading superpower fell asleep.
In this new shift across land and sea, West of Moscow and south of Beijing, and now maybe taking the high ground above Earth, we may wonder if we are on the right side of history.
I raised the problem of the West dozing off on piles of wealth, and letting the East get the jump on us, with an article in August. [9]
So we can doze on and let the future roll over us, and get away from us, or we can wake up and act.
Many problems could be solved on Earth, if all the leading nations worked together to build a future for all Earth’s children in space.
Or we can allow a Russian missile maker to grasp the initiative and take the high frontier, and we will be left in the dust on Earth, wondering what happened.
FIRST SPACE NATION?
Dr Ashurbeyli claims on the web page for Asgardia, “For the first time in history a new nation has been created – not on Earth but in the heavens above.” [7]
An investigation reveals that Asgardia is not the first space nation.
On the 1st of January 1949 a citizen of the United States, James Mangan, launched a space nation called the Nation of Celestial Space, which grew to over 19,000 members. [10]
Celestial Space faded, but the dream of space lives on.
STAR WARS
Working together, the nations could build a peaceful future in space, but if old ways of war roll on, we may be cursed with war from space.
In his 1966 SF novel, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Robert Heinlein described a war between Moon colonists and Earth, fought by dropping rocks on Earth.
A Russian city was nearly taken out a couple of years ago, when a small asteroid exploded in the sky above. [11]
Tasmanians once lived in fear of a Russian invasion, and built coastal defences with great guns, which can still be seen at the Kangaroo Bluff Battery in Bellerive.
There would be no defence from a rock dropped from space.
We really do need to figure out how to build peace.
