Migraines linked to bacteria in mouth
CBC - October 19, 2016
People who suffer from migraines have long complained that certain foods trigger the severe headaches. New research suggests the culprit might be the amount of bacteria in the mouth.

Researchers found that the mouths of people who suffer from migraines harboured significantly more of the microbes that break down nitrates found in certain foods.

These bacteria play an important role in processing nitrates so they can then be converted into nitric oxide in the bloodstream, which widens blood vessels and improves circulation.

While this process is helpful for cardiovascular health, the findings suggest an abundance of these bacteria may break down nitrates more quickly, causing blood vessels in the brain and scalp to dilate, triggering migraines.

Nitrates are naturally found in a variety of leafy green vegetables, and they are added to processed meat as a preservative and to improve flavour and colour.

Doctors have been telling people who suffer from migraines to avoid processed foods for years. Dr. Michael Zitney, who leads the Headache & Pain Relief Centre in Toronto, says this research strengthens their case.

"We have long since known that these kinds of foods can trigger migraines, but we haven't really known how," he says.

Link to cardiovascular research

The process of how nitrates break down into nitric oxide is well-studied in cardiovascular health.

Nitrate-containing drugs are prescribed to treat chest pain or congestive heart failure. But roughly four out of five cardiac patients who take the drugs report severe headaches as a side-effect.

The study's authors hope these findings will help link existing cardiovascular research with migraines.

"It opens a full area of research and connects two areas of research that have not been connected before," says the study's lead author, Antonio Gonzalez, from the University of California San Diego.

Data collected from 'citizen scientists'

This study was based on data from the American Gut Project, which crowd sources oral and fecal samples from so-called "citizen scientists."

Researchers sequenced bacteria found in 172 oral samples and 1,996 fecal samples. They found that the nitrate-reducing microbes were slightly more abundant in the fecal samples of people who suffer from migraines, but significantly more abundant in their oral samples.

Chronic migraines are frequent, severe, pulsating headaches accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. They last anywhere from a few hours to several days.

It's estimated that eight per cent of Canadians have been diagnosed with migraines, although this likely underestimates their prevalence, as some people who suffer from migraines don't seek professional help.

The study's authors say they still need to determine whether the bacteria are a cause or a result of migraines, or are indirectly linked in some other way.

For now, Zitney says, the research suggests that some migraines could one day be treated by controlling the bacteria in our mouths.

"This may be just a glimmer of hope in terms of pursuing possible treatments," he says.

The study was published earlier this week in mSystems, the online journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

I guess that means that anyone suffering from migraines
can use the age-old cure for halitosis...
Try bicarbonate of soda (aka sodium bicarbonate)
use it as a mouthwash and/or as a toothpaste...
that will kill 99% of all bacteria.
(remember to brush the back of your tongue)

If your migraine is actually related to oral bacteria
then bicarbonate of soda will address it.

The other thing you could do, actually, probably a better thing,
is to wipe out the existing bacteria with friendly bacteria.

There is a product called 'Oralbiotic' by NOW foods.
These are basically lozenges that you suck, they contain
a friendly oral bacteria that wipes out hostile bacteria.
The particular bacterium these lozenges contain is:
BLIS K12 Streptococcus salivarius

There are probably other products that contain this
same bacterium.

here's a link to the relevant product on ebay:

Two words: Colloidal silver. Use it instead of mouthwash.

No, natural antibiotics alone are not a solution.
The best protection against bad germs is good germs.

The worst protection against bad germs is to create a sterile environment - because than the first new bacterias that arrive can occupy the whole area. It is much better to have good bacteria already in place so that there is no "free place" to settle.

For instance you can eat fermented vegetables or yoghurt - anything with has a lot of lactic bacteria.

Indeed. This is just part of an over arching issue, that of good vs. bad bacteria all over the body. All parts of the body should be rife with beneficial bacteria. They are in the mouth, the sinuses, everywhere, especially in the gut. By seeking to kill off bacteria and strive for a sterile environment we are harming ourselves. Good bacteria make up, in weight, a fairly large portion of the human body. We are missing out on these great little critters by over use of antibiotics (anti-life), over use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and by our poor food choices. We desperately need the bacteria usually found in soil, the ones that make real food nourishing and nutritious. Modern farming technics have eliminated these bugs. Food is barely food now.

Some say the DNA of the beneficial bugs is more important to our health than our own human DNA. The number of processes and functions of those bugs is astounding. Now we find that a dearth of them contribute to anything from autism to bi-polar disorders. Chronic depression is being cured by abundant use of good bugs and certain raw fatty acids, mainly Omega-3s.

Magnesium serves over 400 different processes in the body. A critical mineral that many of us are deficient in. Again, it goes back to the poor soil. Without the critical microbes the plants can't draw up the necessary minerals.............if they were in the soil. :( Once more we have industrial farming to thank for the dearth of minerals in the dirt.

Very interesting thread. My wife suffers from migraines. We will order the NOW lozenges. I believe Subway meat is processed. Most fast food meats are processed.

Anyone remember the tape from the 70s "Dead Doctors Don't Lie"? The big takeaway from that for me was the knowledge that as we age our bodies digest fewer and fewer vitamins that we pop into our mouths. It said this can be countered by taking colloidal minerals with the vitamins. So for many years now I have taken NOW colloidal minerals. I try to get my wife to take them but she is a bit irregular in that. If you are over 40 and take good quality vitamins (with your biggest meal of the day), watch the color of your urine. If your urine is yellow your vitamins are not digesting well. Add NOW colloidal minerals (or another high quality brand) to that and watch what happens. Your urine will clear up meaning the vitamins are being absorbed much better. That is how I get magnesium and better vitamin intake. I cannot recommend them enough. I have also found that a good couple of slugs of orange juice helps too. So my routine is vitamin E, alpha lipoic acid, a NOW Adam multiple vitamin, NOW colloidal minerals, and orange juice with the biggest meal of the day - 3 times a week. No co Q 10 for me. That is supposed to help mental acuity. I do Dzogchen so no more mental acuity is needed.

So the point is to kill the bad bacteria in the mouth, we can prevent the risk of migraines. Ahh :D
Thanks for the post.
Luckily I usually gargle warm salt water every night and every morning.
Salt is considered one of the top home remedies for oral thrush as it helps destroying the habitat of the fungus. Also, in case of infection, salt can reduce the symptoms and be a quick cure. Bacteria require a water-rich environment to survive. Salt dehydrates cells, which can prevent them from reproducing and can even kill them. A concentration of 20 percent salt is usually sufficient to kill bacteria. Staphylococcus is one exception to this rule, however. High enough concentrations of salt still kill it, but it can survive at much higher concentrations than other strains of bacteria. Some other types of bacteria, including cyanobacteria, are also unusually tolerant of salt.
About the halitosis which I usually call the stinky breath, it can be removed by only natural ingredients. That's what I found here https://authorityremedies.com/how-to-get-rid-of-onion-breath/
They have many methods but I just notice these easiest ways to get rid of stinky breath:
Start with Apples: I always eat 1 to 2 apples after any meal to control the smell of my mouth. This is my most favorite method, not only delicious but also take stinky breath away quickly.
Next is the lemon: The citric of lemon can kill the causes of bad bacteria which makes the breath smell bad. Drinking lemonade every day is also effective as consuming apples, it helps you to get into shape as well.
Or you can follow this tip:
1. Mix a cup of water with lemon juice (1 tablespoon)
2. Rinse your mouth with that mixture 2 or 3 times daily until the bad breath is gone
3. Drink fresh lemonade (1 or 2 glasses)
Lemons can be considered the most frequent used fruit: not only helping you understand how to get rid of onion breath but also can cure some other common problems(like dehydration).
- Green tea: It can easily destroy the sulfur content because it has polyphenols and anti-oxidants that are very powerful. Thus, it will make onion breath disappear right away and improve your health.
Sometimes I just chew some mint leaves grabbed from my grandma's pot haha :D

I have a friend who suffered migraines. She takes feverfew herb everyday and noticed a big difference. The issue to note is that one has to be consistent and everyday with feverfew, it takes a few days for this herb to kick into the body, then migraines are more rare as a result. Keeping good oral hygiene is great to prevent a lot of diseases of course. I use colloidal silver for viruses, but it is good for many issues. Baking soda is also great for so many things...

I've noticed if a gum infection or irritation happens in the area between the incisors (the eye tooth), and canines, it at least for me can trigger a classic optical migraine full blown with all the geometry and motion and optical deficiency while the inflammation is in effect. The only solution has been to water pik that area clean from any food or spice which may cause irritation of the nerves in that location. Point being those nerves by the teeth can trigger the migraine symptoms.. Infection or irritation (such as trapped spice) can trigger it.. Good gum and tooth health then is important when having migraines..

I cleared up my migraines by cleaning up my diet. No artificial sweeteners, flavorings, preservatives etc. Even went organic with none of the standard chemicals used in regular big ag practices these days. The only thing left that triggers an onset in the last 14 years is severe stress. As long as I live an uneventful life I live a migraine free life!!! Thanks to the knowledge I gleaned from Kevin Trudeau, who unfortunately is sitting in jail for revealing natural cures to the world. I bless him for that.
