Hello Everyone:
Star Trek made better representations of a warp drive motor than Nasa! This motor looks phony! Of course I don't know that but just look at it? A 5 year old said it looked "not real"!
I have to go with the 5 year olds thoughts on this one.....

NASA’s mysterious ‘Warp Drive’ engine is working in tests leaked paper shows

NASA’s much-hyped EM Drive – often described as a ‘Warp Drive’ – is actually working in tests at the space agency, according to a leaked paper.

The engine works by bouncing microwaves around inside an enclosed container – and seems to defy the laws of physics.

But if it works, it could revolutionise space travel – allowing spaceships to reach Mars in weeks.

The engine has no exhaust, and would outperform any current booster used in space.

A NASA team led by Harold White said, ‘The test campaign included a null thrust test effort to identify any mundane sources of impulsive thrust, however none were identified.

‘Thrust data from forward, reverse, and null suggests that the system is consistently performing with a thrust to power ratio of 1.2 ± 0.1 millinewtons per kilowatt.’

The concept of the EM Drive was considered implausible – and scientists suggested that it broke the laws of physics.

If true, it could revolutionise space travel.

The proposed engine works by bouncing microwaves around inside an enclosed container, and the idea was first mooted by British researcher Roger Shawyer.

But many researchers said it was impossible.

Steven Thomson of the University of St Andrews wrote, ‘The EMDrive is designed to be a closed system that doesn’t emit any particles or radiation. It cannot possibly generate any thrust without breaking some seriously fundamental laws of physics. To put it bluntly, it’s like trying to pull yourself up by your shoelaces and hoping you’ll levitate.’

It's not phoney.

It uses the shape of the container to develop an asymmetrical thrust vector. Micro waves within the container bounce off the walls , but because of the shape of the container more of them bounce off the short end. These more numerous impacts in one direction develops a non-impulse thrust - a thrust without an exhaust or propellant.

There have been numerous threads about this. I think Paul Laviolette is working on one too.

That is an old picture for a Chinese model EM drive, why are they using it for a NASA photo?

It does seem to be a real NASA photo... it's the same one as on this page:

Okay, well it was used in this article a few years ago as well is why I say it is an old photo..

Anybody do the math to see how much power is required to generate even one horsepower of thrust out of the microwave engine?

One could then compare lifting off a typical Apollo sized spacecraft using the microwave engine, how much power it would need.

Apollo 11
It used a cluster of five 12.2-foot (3.7-meter) wide F-1 engines as its foundation, with each 18.5-foot (5.6-meter) tall engine capable of each generating 1.5 million pounds of thrust — about 32 million horsepower — as it burned about 6,000 pounds of rocket fuel every second.

Technician 1 "ok ready for the test on the warp drive in 5,4,3,2,1"
flicks switch
Technician 2 "Where did it go?"
Phone rings
Technician 1 "hello?"
phone caller "is this Nasa?"
Technician 1 "yes it is, who is speaking?"
phone caller "no one of importance, but I am in NZ and I have had a strange device fall through my roof and on it was a sticker that said call this number if found"
Technician 1 "OMG it worked!"

Paramount/STAR TREK will have to revise its technical drawings of the USS Enterprise (oh,... I forgot, they used a beer factory!) :)

Sorry about this in advance, cannot resist:

The impulse drive has been at works for a century - works on alcohol - and the impulse to drive will soon follow!

Old fashioned NASA Rockets operate in linear concepts of space time. Our space-time is actually an electromagnetic curving, ever spiraling form from which our space-time appears as matter. An ever changing vector of energy is what will move us through what we perceive as space.

Maybe it's just me and my suspicious nature when it comes to anything the government says . . . but why would such a revolutionary technology be shown and shared with the public -- including another country which could develop it first and militarize space?

That aside, I hope it's true. Very exciting, if so!

Amor, can you elaborate or maybe share a good link where I can educate myself?

I've never heard of a spiral space-time model. Just that space can be "bent" and thereby traveled through much faster.

That was needed to lift the vehicle, fuel and payload to achieve escape velocity from the earth.

Gonna reiterate.. the MATH needs to be done to see WHY this "engine design" is just 'let out in the open'...

Let's try the math based on some assumptions, with a little bit of number juggling..

from the OP (and this value claimed for thrust from the microwave device is considered HIGH, other reports have this 'thrust' reduced by a factor of 10 LESS thrust) :

Thrust data from forward, reverse, and null suggests that the system is consistently performing with a thrust to power ratio of 1.2 ± 0.1 millinewtons per kilowatt.’

One kilowatt is 1000 watts, or the amount of energy being consumed continually of 10-each 100 watt light-bulbs running continuously. Anyone ever put their HAND near a 100 watt bulb? HEAT lots of it.. HEAT is radiation, infra-red radiation being dissipated in the device. Your laptop may generate 25 watts heat. Does it burn your leg? How about something 4 times the heat coming from your laptop, now have 10X more laptops generating that heat..

Now 1.2 milli-newtons thrust is what is claimed that this device will product. That is 0.0012 newtons thrust.. we need to convert this into grams of thrust since we are going to figure out how to "float a human" using this "microwave engine"..

Let's convert that "newton value" into what it would be in grams force of thrust.

0.122 grams of thrust then would be being generated for 1000 watts input.. this webpage is the calculator: http://www.convertunits.com/from/mN/to/gram-force

A human for instance weighs 54,000 grams on average for a small south Korean teenager. Larger humans will weigh 62,500 grams average body weight (Europeans). Let's use the smallest weight.

To neutralize the weight of one human then one needs to have a reaction force equal to that amount of weight for the human in the opposite direction (reaction engine).
54,000 grams thrust in the opposite direction than gravity is needed.

Whats the mathematics then is that to just neutralize the weight of the human?

54,000 (grams weight) / .122 (grams thrust) gives us a value of 442,622.95 is needed.

Multiply that times 1000 watts to know how many watts are needed then to get that amount of thrust to neutralize the weight of a small human.

442622.95 x 1000 = 442,622,950 442.6 MILLION WATTS.....is needed to float a human. Continually...

Maybe that is why it is so freely talked about as being impractical?

Payloads are many hundreds if not 1000's of times heavier than a human.

Chemical rocket engines easily generate that type of "neutralizing force".. like hook the human up to a water-jet, a chemical rocket.. any of those use way less power than this 'microwave engine would'...

Maybe one can see why a Saturn V rocket was needed to launch, and achieve escape velocity? And why a microwave engine is a ludicrous concept.

Nobody talked about that amount of HEAT being generated, which WOULD radiate out into space. Considering an efficiency of maybe 80% at best, there would be even more power needed to move a device as small as the weight of a human... Trying to move a starship with this type of stuff is impossible...

Just a FYI - T. Townsend Brown using capacitors (as the dielectric) being rapidly spike charged with a high voltage and sharp rise-time current pulse appears to have generated a LOT more thrust than the "microwave engine" would following the data reported. The amount of reactionary force within the microwave cavity (using "air" or vacuum as the medium) is a whole lot less, than the force within the dielectric of the capacitor(s)..

There is no 'warp' produced by the microwave engine. (despite others pushing TT Brown's stuff, there is no 'warp' produced there either). These are "reactionary engines" moving charges within different "closed" media. The particle mass moved is minuscule based on the amount of energy consumed.

A video released by Chinese state media earlier this month shows scientists from China's space agency with a working EM Drive. While that seems promising, there's yet conclusive evidence that shows how an EM Drive can work.
