First tsunami waves arrive
NZ civil defence says the first waves have arrived “but may not be the largest”. It says the threat – and the waves – could continue for some hours.
It has warned that coastlines closest to the epicentre can expect waves up to 3-5m higher than normal. This covers Blenheim to the Banks peninsula, as well as the Chatham Islands, the dark blue areas shown on the map.
It warns that the rest of the east coast can also expect increased waves of 1-3m higher than usual.
People in all coastal areas are warned to stay away from beaches and out of the water.

I live in Christchurch. It was a big, lasted about 1 minute, but it wasnt very violent, more like being on a ship, nothing like the big one from 2011.
People think it something to do with the Moon?

Yes, it is a full moon over NZ at the time of the quake and a once-in-a-seventy-year event, officially a Super Moon as of now. According to myth(?), full Moons have long been blamed for increased Earthquake activity, - amongst other things - altho I don't think there is any scientific explanation for it - I'm sure Hervé would know more about that! ;))
Glad you're OK Timewaster; - I'm in Tauranga and we felt it here, 700 km away!

... earth is being drawn and quartered between sun and moon in opposition/conjunction... which generates some internal adjustments. However, many attempts to correlate full and new moons with earthquakes have yielded only weak results... as they say in scientific milieux: needs more studies :)

I can feel the energetic waves again... Something is still moving. Could be aftershocks somewhere.

I'm in Taranaki, it was a real big quake the biggest I've encountered! My wife jumped out of bed screaming earthquake! I lay back and said don't panic! Then the lights fell out of the roof and landed on my nose! I'm sporting a large cut!

I have a question, does anyone know why the sky lights up like lightening when there is a earthquake?

Hey buddy. A few scientific minded people have come with things over the years but within this article probably describes it the best way. And it could tie into the electric universe theory too. I mean everything has has some form of electron moving within it.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/01/140106-earthquake-lights-earthquake-prediction-geology-science/
the lights are caused by electrical properties of certain rocks in specific settings, report scientists in a new paper.
Sometimes called earthquake lightning, the lights can take "many different shapes, forms, and colors," says study coauthor Friedemann Freund, an adjunct professor of physics at San Jose State University and a senior researcher at NASA's Ames Research Center.
Freund says common forms of earthquake lights include bluish flames that appear to come out of the ground at ankle height; orbs of light called ball lightning that float in the air for tens of seconds or even minutes; and quick flashes of bright light that resemble regular lightning strikes, except they come out of the ground instead of the sky and can stretch up to 650 feet (200 meters).

That goes with how I explain how Solar blast from flares charge the plates like a large capacitor until it pops.
Northern lights are created from an intense amount of energy passing through the atmosphere.
Quake lightning seems to create the same affect.
