Has anyone ever used sage for smudging? We burn it everyday in our home. It helps to purify the air and remove toxins.

I use it often.
Recently watched a video claiming sage is the wrong plant to use. Something about sage allowing and even opening access to spirit world.
They said cedar is the one to use. It was a George Noory, Beyond Belief episode. S3 E60?ish

I've burned sage in an old house that belonged to my wife's godmother, who passed away. After passing, the godmother's spirits remained in the house. How did we know this? Every time my wife visited the godmother's house, one bedroom lamp was always lit. My wife always make sure that the lamp was turned off when she leaves the house. Also, she and I both felt her presence every time we visited her house. I googled this issue, and found that burning sage was sure way to let the godmother's spirit leave the house. It worked. My wife had her friend, who has some special power to communicate with ghosts, burn sage for us and chanted some Buddhist scriptures, which enabled the ghost to leave the house. After that, the house remained free, and we never felt the ghost's presence again.
I was out of town when the first smudging was performed. Couple of weeks after that, I arrived in town and my wife and I burned sage again just to be sure, along with chanting some Buddhist scriptures.

I was in the house of a friend who was complaining about various "haunting" type events which were causing him a lot of anguish. I brought two women who did house clearings.
There was a most oppressive feeling in the second floor, where most of the trouble was happening. It was summer, humid and the air conditioner was not on and it felt oppressive, but I think that feeling extended beyond the temperature and humidity. One of the women, a shaman, burned some sage and wafted it over me with a feather and I felt so much relief from the oppressiveness. Not sure how much of that was the sage and how much was the rite involved.
I am also a big fan of frankincense. It really elevates the mood and puts the mind in a meditative state.

I use Bursera graveolens (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bursera_graveolens), known in Spanish as palo santo ("holy wood") from time to time... I even smudge the walls and corners with it if I feel the whim, but nothing regular or regulated.
Just burn a bit of the stick, it lets off a nice strong pleasant smell... it's got quite the shamanic history.

I burn sage and sweet grass regularly, also copal resin.
It really helps to keep the energy light.
I also have an essential oil diffuser and I diffuse sage, frankincense, lavender and rosemary oils daily.
I stopped burning incense when I realized it was giving me a chronic cough.
I have a lot of crystals and semi precious stones which I cleanse in salt water about once a month and sit outside for a few days to recharge.
It always feels much lighter when they come back inside with fresh energy.
House plants indoors help a lot too. I have an indoor jungle!
They live outside during the warm months, and stay healthy indoors with full spectrum lighting during the winter.

Now that I think of it, I think I asked on this forum (IIRC) how to cleanse & ended up doing some extreme cleansing (http://www.energy-shifter.com/epsom-salt-burn.html), but I felt the ceremony was more the peace of mind for the woman I was helping (because I'm pretty skeptical) we smudged the problem area then burned Epsom salt with rubbing alcohol in it near a chimney with a good updraft; after we took the burnt salt and disposed of it in the ocean.
She was happy with the outcome, that's all that matters really.

Absolutely. Whenever I have moved in the past, I have always smudged with sage in order for the home to be cleansed spiritually. It has seemed to always work. This practice was taught to my sister by a Hopi Elder (she received special permission from the tribe to be taught in the Hopi tradition - up to a point) and it has been a part of my tradition ever since.

Recently I have been burning dried bay leaves. Whenever I feel a tad off or the environment feels a tad off, I start burning a bay leaf (they don't stay burning well but do burn fast with a flame. I light mine from the bottom and the flame just works its way up - the oils in it cause it to burn very rapidly, but will go out if it loses it's flame). While it is burning I leave, and come back 5 minutes later and suddenly everything is completely different. Smells quite wonderful as well. Apparently, bay leaves are great for burning for all kinds of rituals and manifestations. I mostly just really like the smell and ambience it gives. It definitely clears.

Fantastic question, topic and input so far all.
I don't know about you all but I love sage. I love the frequency it offers. I am grateful for its existence as an expression and the assistance to my life it offers me. Every time i employ it. This is a state I hold within me for all i do. It is living in ceremony. I can assure you is offer a powerful place to be. I hold it in the videos i co-create also as i take responsibility of my state in offering what i do to contribute to the whole always.
As for sage (or any of the other instruments mentioned above or after) The elementals of Earth, Fire and Ether in the smoke combined too from that aspect in one experience. From my own exploration what you are all describing is called 'Energetic Hygiene' (http://www.servantoftruth.org/energy-hygiene.html). It is a aspect of the unseen realms. This for most holds enormous potential at present. When i choose to employ it I always get into a meditative state and in that set my intent of what i seek and therefore ask via feeling of what i wish to experience with it as a partner. Palo Santo too as TargeT too offers. That i love and employ as super duper defense. It kicks butt hehe. I have it as a Young Living Oil to offer extra psychic defense to my energy field also. I drop that, these words to offer further exploration and contemplation in a much more focused way to see a greater potential for what each of you who ever see these words to add with some serious focus what you are likely to already be doing in knowingness.
This video explores a method to really clear your entire house. Incense can do it for sure as described. But, Sage is really brilliant too. Hearing this is likely to aid your focus a bit to be vigilant on the Energy Hygiene of your room, house, work space etc:

The link above relative to Energy Hygiene offers also employing it to smudge your cars if you have them. Alot on the emotional and energetic aspects occur there which most haven't contemplated before. Here is a quick vid on it also as to the potentials. As, you think and observe...how many have cars but how many truly really clear them being a part of the massive road networks affecting so many around the world? Not many at present. This thus offers enormous potential if a few master their spaces amongst the masses also:

I am very fond of palo santo also. I was taught that it is the oldest incense in the world, used by shaman for many thousands of years. It is harvested from trees that have been dead for a minimum of seven years traditionally. The tree grows primarily in Ecuador. It has a heavenly scent.

I use it most days along with cedar and sweet grass. Light it, put a little sacred tobacco in after smudging myself and say prayers. These are the four directions medicine.
Sage is also good in a steam for sinus infection or in tea for cold symptoms.

I burned a bit of my stick last night, this thread reminded me of it... i like to just pick it up and smell it.. haha such a good odor, I've been told by local Obea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obeah)practitioners not to mess around with it (the guy lives in a place that's literally called the "voodoo shack" in the bush down here haha) so just in case I'm respectful and mindful when using it.

We smudge all the time, really just burn it in one of our rooms but it totally carries throughout the entire house.

Yup. Like others said palo santo, sage and cedar. Intention and open windows. The wind will help you and it will roar to take out stubborn energies.
