An interesting video about why the butterfly symbol has been used on mind control:

It is interesting to note that the christian-centric video associates the butterfly with mind control.

Though......

In Christianity, the butterfly has long been a symbol of the resurrection of Christ as well as the resurrection of believers. The caterpillar disappears into a cocoon, which is like the tomb Christ lay in after the crucifixion, appearing dead. Later, it emerges from "death," having transformed into something more beautiful and powerful than it was.

I don't think christianity adopted the butterfly symbol... I can't find "butterfly" in the bible anywhere. That comparison can be made, but I don't find it adequate, christians think that christ was god on flesh already before dead, he was (is? ;-) already beautiful and perfect... I mean, his death was never needed to make him more beautiful as the comparison suggest.

Yes but you don't have to use a specific symbol, it can be alluded to just like many things in the bible are. 'Mind control' isn't specifically written in the bible but it's alluded to.
