Not sure if it has anything to do with Julian Assanges statement....

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange also said last year that he would
surrender to US authorities if Mr Obama pardoned Ms Manning.

Obama commutes Chelsea Manning sentence

From the section US & Canada

Manning declared her new identity the day after sentencing

President Barack Obama has commuted Chelsea Manning's sentence for leaking
documents to Wikileaks in 2010. The 29-year-old transgender US Army private,
born Bradley Manning, will be freed on 17 May instead of her scheduled 2045
release. She was sentenced to 35 years in 2013 for her role in leaking diplomatic
cables to the anti-secrecy group. The leak was one of the largest breaches of
classified material in US history.

The Obama administration has been under pressure to release Ms Manning, who
twice attempted suicide last year at the male military prison where she is being
held at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She also went on a hunger strike last year, which
ended after the military agreed to provide her with gender dysphoria treatment.

The White House has suggested it was open to commuting Ms Manning's sentence
in recent days, contrasting her situation with Edward Snowden, the former National
Security Agency contractor who leaked surveillance documents and is living as a
fugitive in Russia.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange also said last year that he would surrender to US
authorities if Mr Obama pardoned Ms Manning.

On Tuesday, President Obama granted commutation of sentence to 209 individuals
and pardons to 64 others.

5th April 2010 10:44 EST WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff.

Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-sight, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

What greatly concerns me here is that a few days ago Wikileaks twitted that if Manning was pardoned, Julian Assange would agree to be extradited to the U. S.

Could this be the reason behind this seemingly great act of clemency?

I hope not!!!

The President who promised "Hope and Change" to his people, but did so much to expand the surveillance state, to take away civil rights from Americans, the President who promised sunshine but instead implemented more secrecy, has finally done something positive on this front. I will remember Chelsea Manning's commutation as a spot of sunshine in what otherwise was an 8 year long dark cloud.

Chelsea Manning Will Be Free

President Obama has commuted Chelsea Manning’s sentence and she will be released this May. In September 2016, WikiLeaks publisher, Julian Assange offered to turn himself in to US authorities if President Obama were to pardon Manning. It will be interesting to see if Assange makes good on his offer.

Chelsea was born Bradley Manning and was serving in the Iraq War as an Army intelligence analyst in 2009 when he saw footage from an Apache helicopter of 11 innocent Iraqi civilians viciously murdered as the two-man crew exhibited appalling bloodlust. He also reviewed thousands of US diplomatic cables, describing much of the realpolitik that he observed in these to be “…crazy, almost criminal political backdealings”.

Manning attempted to pass the information to the Washington Post and to the New York Times but neither were interested. He then approached WikiLeaks, which published the footage in early 2010 with the headline, “Collateral Murder”. This story plus the hundreds of thousands of embarrassing US diplomatic cables supplied by Manning, which came to be known as “Cablegate” put WikiLeaks on the map.

Manning was arrested in late May of 2010 and has remained in custody ever since. I had the occasion to attend one day at his pre-trial hearings at Fort Meade. Manning’s lawyer, David Coombs, who is interviewed in this clip from the Today Show filmed a few days before Manning’s commutation was announced tears up twice, about the harshness of Chelsea’s 35-year sentence saying, “I’ve represented murderers, I’ve represented rapists, I’v represented child molesters and none of them received 35 years, none of them.”

Coombs also confirms that nobody’s life was endangered by Manning’s leaks. Only a few diplomats “feelings were hurt.” He also says that, he “would be the happiest person alive – next to maybe Chelsea – if the President does, in fact commute her sentence.”

Why would Obama do this? It speaks to the transgender issue being pushed hard by whomever it is that pushes their agendas down our throats! Transgenders are .004% of the population. Can you name any other group that gets this much traction, with such low numbers? Why are 'they' pushing this on us? Aren't there 10,000 other more important issues facing this country than which bathroom someone takes a leak in?!?!

..."

Yo! Her release of material to WikiLeaks is the reason Chelsea Manning (previously Bradley Manning) is relevant I'd say. Transgender issue being secondary imo. Useful combination for Obama to elevate himself in the eyes of liberals. I know I like this move! even though I don't trust Obama on the whole and see this as shallow politics play. Still very happy about this though

More distraction from more important issues the elite don't want us focusing on, I would say. That seems pretty obvious.

I believe we needpeople like Chelsea manning. We need more whistleblowers and more souls who aren't afraid to go public with ugly truths. I don't see this as anything but good. Her transition as zero to do with her conviction to me. People won't blow the whistle if they think they'll be thrown in a cell for 50 years!

The only thing I'm proud of Obama for.

I agree, though I think the whole transgender thing (aside from Manning's very important role as a military whistleblower) has been more about creating distractions, the kind the Progressives like to think are changing things for everyone, when in fact, they are serving more just as a distraction/coverup to outrageously important things like Pizzagate, etc.

This is one of the few things Obama has done that I can fully agree with. Despite Obama basically increasing the surveillance state several fold on his watch he did the right thing for a change. Wonder why? Was it for liberty for the people or for transgenderism.
Here is a great link from Snowden re the surveillance state that is a good one.
