Cannot explain orbiting satellites or GPS. They rationalize that Satellites are a hoax and GPS only exists due to a network of radio transmitters
How does the Sun circle the Earth for night and day. They say Sun travels via zero space and instantaneously appears on the other side of the disc. When facts and science contradict, they make up nonsensical explanations. First, gravity does not exist and then it does exist to bend the sun’s rays. The meme is the ideal project for mind-control that could be devised by Tavistock institute & CIA. It is amazing how many clever, well-meaning and spiritually oriented individuals have been suckered in by this transparent pseudo-scientific sham.

About 1 year ago, conspiracy youtubers started getting flooded with flat earth video recommendations even though they had previously never watched a flat earth video in their life. Cass Sunstein, left, chief Obama administration propagandist describes this technique in his book “Nudge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_%28book%29).” The technique is to target groups whose opinion they want to shape and gently nudge in the certain directions with several techniques. These include infiltrators and internet forums or comments sections of articles as well as using connections with websites such as youtube to give people recommendations based on their data to push them where they need to go.

Up until now on youtube, this has been most notably used for pushing the reptillian story as well as other bizarre new age conspiracy angles to make people discredit themselves when talking about truth as well getting lost in labyrinths of insanity. It has also been used for other topics such as global warming, zionism, and alternative health (which Sunstein specifically mentions in his book). It is important that the nudging is gentle and incremental.

I have come across many people who just one year ago were speaking serious truths. Now all they want to talk about is the flat earth, something of no consequence compared to the murder of almost all of humanity.

I came to the Flat Earth "theory" inadvertently while researching moon landing hoaxes. about a year or so ago.

I wasn't particularly interested but it continually popped up on almost every website I visited. What then caught my attention was that some of the "expert" ( and often annoying) "Astronomers" who spend their days "debunking" everything from the Electric Universe, to Comets or Niburu started to weigh in. Oddly a few of them went to the "flat earth" side! WOW!

I expect the others that stayed firmly on the Spherical Earth side to increase their "science minded" credibility among the forums (as shills and debunkers) while their co-workers went off into the deep end to make friends with some of the more gullible and fanciful types. True "scientists" tend to weigh information thoughtfully in my experience, they do not instantly dismiss everything they come across and continually attack the inquisitive...nor are they awake 23 hours a day. ...

After dozens of hours watching good, bad and some obviously fake moon landing footage I had been pretty much through the entire gamut of forums full of opinions, facts and fantasies with the attendant misdirection, misinformation and manipulation. So the FLAT Earth nonsense seemed fairly obvious as well as the methods to play head games with well intentioned curious users. What was most alarming was how good the video and graphical presentations were. magically every week new materials and videos were released supporting flat earth...

I did entertain the notion for a few days and tried to wrap my head around "flat earth" but unfortunately my time spent looking at torsion and plasma physics, the Electric Universe models, elecrtogravitics and the like just couldn't let me accept it intuitively or physically. It's just WRONG. I eventually concluded that I could possibly accept that we and our solar system are in an ENORMOUS transparent crystal Dyson Sphere...but I couldn't convince myself of that either. It was about as likely as us all in a giant snow globe...

The only value I see with Flat Earth is tracing it back to whatever source it came from and who and how they targeted select "influencers" to achieve such a rapid uptake and dissemination of utter BS. Which also has me wondering what other planted, fabricated "new mythologies" are in play. I visit many forums but I only post here and usually sporadically...so I see "patterns" of emerging topics, that often rely on the same suspect sources to confirm or verify oddball theories.

Any agencies that can benefit from misdirection probably plants spurious information, hoping for it to go viral in some way ....unfortunately there are a few hundred of these agencies, not all allied or coordinated. If anything, they certainly complicate real truth from getting out or being taken or investigated seriously. I suppose that means they have done a good job as it is a colossal waste of time that can be better spent elsewhere investigating other things.

According to this, night should never exist because everyone on Earth would always be able to see the Sun at some angle in the sky.

They also have to come up with lots of unrelated excuses to explain things like the phases of the Moon, seasonal changes, lunar eclipses, etc. So which is more satisfying: a single model that explains all of those things instantly, in a very intuitive way, or a model that requires lots of various excuses to explain each thing individually that's wrong with it?

It's like if you say the neighbor's cow is fake, and just a mannequin of a cow. Then how does it eat grass? Because there's robotics inside of it. And how does it poop? It's conveyed to the butthole by the robotics. But where does the poop come from? It puts the grass mechanically collected into its mouth through a series of chemical reactions within the inside of the robotic mannequin. Why does it look at me sometimes? There's a camera in its head that's remote controlled by an operator somewhere else who's watching you, etc. etc. Why go to such lengths to come up with all of these lame ass excuses when the explanation that the cow is just a real cow explains everything all at once?

I recently got to know a nice guy who is a believer in this flat earth movement. He sent me a video that I slogged through. There are so many suppositions that don't hold water on their 200 reasons the earth is flat. I can only assume they have never been in a jet flying at 35000 ft. (it is an observable curve that is viewed, at least I see it)

It makes good sense it is a psy op to make people spinny on shaking there solid ground certainties. It is kind of funny how nasty they get when you argue on some of their suppositions.

The history of flat earth goes quite a ways back. Islam is a big proponent on this since Mohammad believed in a flat earth and he could say no wrong.

I think it comes from a ancient mid east idea of the earth is flat, and someone asked what is it on? and the answer is it is on the back of the great turtle, and what is the turtle on? - in the Northern Hemisphere, celestial objects (stars, galaxies, nebulas, etc.) rotate around the North Celestial Pole.
very near to Polaris, the "North Star"

Just incredible. But how are these flat earthers thinking? The answer seems to be they don't think to the end. Because it is one thing to claim the earth is flat, it is a totally different thing explaining the implications of a flat earth. If earth is flat, the implication is that either the earth is infinite in all directions or it is finite and people can fall off the cliff so to speak. Has anyone ever heard they walked on earth in one direction into infinity? Or they walked, suddenly came to the great cliff...

I know the idea of a flat Earth sounds ridiculous but I actually took the time to understand what actual arguments these people are making. It's a little more nuanced than they often get credit for (the above mischaracterization being one example of this) but I think it's still a very stupid theory. I would rank its stupidity level around the same as Marxism. It's really stupid if you think about it, but yet it's just convincing enough that some uneducated people actually fall hard for it. I think the mocking and mischaracterization of their arguments is part of what emboldens them to continue arguing, because most people probably aren't actually even listening to them in the first place. This is why getting a real education is important, no matter where people get it from.

Here is an interesting hypothesis ...

Perhaps the fact that most people do not travel great distances by a means that allows ones own senses and judgements give us a fully accurate view of exactly how much distance we are actually covering - which in turn would give one a sense of roughly how large the Earth actually is. Most people, especially perhaps slightly less educated ones do not travel long distances by walking or even driving then relate that to a distance covered on a map of the earth.

How this relates: If one believes that the earth is only a few hundred miles, or perhaps a couple thousand miles across, or really has no actual concept of the size of the planet at all, then the logic so often presented for the flat earth story would actually be correct. If the distance around the earth was say 2000 miles, then for sure we would notice the curvature, that flat earth supporters say do not exist because we don't observe them. But the earth is 25,000 miles around - and so as explained and calculated in the vid Exomatrix posted above, we shouldn't be able to see these curvatures, especially when the Fresnel effect bends the light around the surface.

Many of the flat earth "logic" would be much more correct if the earth was far smaller than we know it to be.

Born and raised in rural Canada and moving to a neighboring province, I am fully aware that for me to drive 10 hours to visit my family in BC (just the next province over - very close by Canadian standards ;)) is like a teeny tiny distance on a globe or map of the earth. I have an "awareness" of how large the earth is. Maybe not having this awareness enables a person to be able to "understand" and side with some of this flat earth "logic". Rather than their brain thinking and saying ... no, that's probably not right because of scale and perspective, the might think, "Yeah, I can see how that video showed my 20 miles up and there's no curve" - nothing in their head that says "the earth is huge, let's think about the perspective first before buying that". All because (in addition to possibly just not knowing how anything actually works) they had a lack of awareness of the actual size of the earth ... a potential enabler.

One of its organs of mischief is known as the Flat Earth Society (FES) and its explicit purpose is to take down every single truth-oriented website, blog and/or organization which permits an open comment section at the bottom of their posts and articles.
Here’s how they work:
Agents of the FES often begin by posting rather benign yet factual comments about NASA, which everyone now knows is a rogue agency which can rarely be trusted to tell the truth about particular scientific endeavors and galactic missions. That’s a no-brainer that everyone agrees with—NASA holds onto most of the truth and parcels out only the absolute minimum to the taxpayers who fund their space missions and other assorted projects.
The Flat Earthers then take advantage of this universal hatred of NASA for their spewing so much deception over so many years, and they use it to subtly garner support for their nonsensical Flat Earth Theory (FET). When the time is right, the Flat Earthers will then start introducing utterly absurd notions about the Solar System and patently false concepts about the Earth’s relationship to the Sun.
They justify their preposterous sophistry and wacky ideas by routinely outing NASA as a serially prevaricating government agency, which they are — and then using their well-known deception as a justification to overturn the entire paradigm of modern astrophysics. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water. There is no astronomical scientific truth that the Flat Earthers have left unassailed. You name it — gravity, a spherical Earth and other planetary orbs, rotational movement of the planets. planetary revolutions around the Sun — they throw it all out and label it as “NASA lies”.
Once they do that in a very public Internet forum or chat room, website or blog comment section, they begin to stir up a LOT of trouble. They pre-position sock-puppets in the same forums, blogs, etc, who will, with apparent spontaneity, support their silly and stupid comments about the Flat Earth Theory (FET). The longer the comment thread, the more opportunity to draw in the unsuspecting into their outlandish web of deceit and deception.
They do this by presenting some entirely new and quite valid hypotheses which do introduce such concepts that are related to the Electric Universe; or that propose that the Solar System is also moving though space in a manner which defies the conventional scientific wisdom. There are many instances where the current scientific paradigm does completely fall down, by the way, and the FEs use these obvious flaws to take down the whole system of modern thought.
By so aggressively assaulting the conventional wisdom which is accepted by the vast majority of people on the planet, they then tar the reputation of the truth movement groups whose websites they have deliberately polluted with their obvious foolishness concerning their FLAT EARTH fantasies.

Pedagogic way to explain the red flags of pseudoscience

In many ways, Flat Earth pseudoscience is a “safe” topic to discuss on the Internet. Most people will not have an ideological aversion to critical information. It does not really matter that much if the viewer is a democrat or republican, religious believer or secular atheist, environmentalist or capitalist and so on. Thus, there is very little emotional resistance from any of these groups to understand that Flat Earth claims are pseudoscientific in nature.

Thus, debunking Flat Earth nonsense can be an excellent case study to highlight the many typical features or red flags of pseudoscience (https://debunkingdenialism.com/2011/11/10/common-denialist-tactics-defined-and-destroyed/). This includes quoting scientists out of context, misusing basic science, confusing mechanism with fact, creating fake controversies, false balance, conspiracy theories, fake experts and so on. If people can understand these red flags in a relatively emotionally neutral context, they could perhaps have a better chance at recognizing these red flags in other contexts, where it might be much more difficult to discuss or make progress.
Flat Earth pseudoscience is a symptoms of anti-intellectualism

In the 1990s and early 2000s, a lot of the online presence of Flat Earth societies on various websites and forums was probably based on satire. With the advent of YouTube and the growing conspiracy movements, more and more people have seriously claimed that the earth is flat. Before, many cranks were often socially isolated and rarely encountered thousands of other people who shared their viewpoints.
With the Internet, it has become possible to connect with people who share your own worldview and experience enormous reinforcement. It is also very easy to become ideologically isolated online with search engines silently adapting to your search behavior and showing you material that the search engine algorithm has predicted that you want to see. This is ultimately done to monetize the preferences of individuals, but has the disturbing side effect of reducing the amount of divergent information that a person will see. It is like a form of technological confirmation bias. On social media, you also get to decide who you follow and who to block, further strengthening ideological isolation. Ultimately, the Flat Earth movement is a symptom of anti-intellectualism. It is an extreme distrust of modernity and science on the base of a conspiracy theory that does not even remotely make sense even by the low standards of conspiracy theories. For some reason, all the governments of 200+ countries of the world have decided to fool people into thinking that the Earth is really shaped like a sphere. On the Flat Earth model, Antarctica is at the ends of the flat disc, and protected by the military. Why all the governments of the world are conspiring together and why they are trying to hide the supposed fact that the Earth is flat is exceptionally difficult for Flat Earth activists to understand.
Debunking Flat Earth conspiracy theories is thus one aspect of combating anti-intellectualism.
Good way to illustrate how people can fall for misinformation

Many people have a hard time to imagine how “people could be that dumb” to believe that the Earth is flat. It is often challenging to fathom how people can come to believe the most radically absurd claims about the world that we know are false. However, it is a simplification to blame it all on personal factors like a supposed lack of intelligence. This is because it not only underestimates situational factors, but also fails to explain why many, very intelligent people also accept pseudoscience and quackery.
Flat Earth pseudoscience, due to its patently absurd content, offers a stark reality of the power of misinformation. Misinformation can contribute to people starting to buy into claim that are so strongly incompatible with everything we know about basic physics. The realization that there are people who think the Earth is flat can in many ways be sobering and make it easier to understand how and why people can be ignorant and misinformed enough to be against vaccines or reject climate science.
Although Flat Earth conspiracy theories do not have anywhere near the level of danger that the anti-vaccine and climate denial have, it stands out because we have known that the Earth is not flat since the ancient Greeks like Aristotle and Eratosthenes. There is very little, if any, opposition among major political ideologies to labelling Flat Earth beliefs as pseudoscience, so it is in some ways a set of claims that almost everyone, except Flat Earth believers, can agree on is pseudoscience. It also opens up for conversations like “well if there are people who are misinformed enough to think the Earth is flat, maybe they could be misinformed on other issues as well?”
Boosting the signal of science and reason against the noise of misinformation

Flat Earth conspiracy theories are pseudoscience and all scientifically accurate refutations of pseudoscience is a good thing. Looking at these issues from a much larger perspective can be equally sobering. There is so much misinformation, pseudoscience and quackery out there on the Internet and offline. Regardless of the specific details around Flat Earth conspiracy theories, it can often be beneficial to boost the signal of science and reason against the background noise of vapid nonsense.
You will probably not convince that many Flat Earth activists, but bringing attention to the larger issues of scientific rationality versus pseudoscientific conspiracy theories might very well make it worth debunking Flat Earth pseudoscience. In a growing misinformation war, scientific information that refutes pseudoscience is sorely needed.
Conclusion

Flat Earth pseudoscience pales in comparison with many other forms of pseudoscience, both in deceptive content and societal consequences. So why bother debunking it? Why even care? It turns out that there are some arguments for why it might be of value to debunk Flat Earth nonsense: debunking pseudoscience and anti-intellectualism wherever it can be found is often a good thing regardless of the topic, it helps to boost the signal of science and critical thinking, it is a pedagogic case study on identifying the many red flags of pseudoscience because the issue does not have that much ideological and emotional baggage for most bystanders who come across the subject and it is perhaps one of the most explicit ways of illustrating that people really can and do believe extreme nonsense.
Finally, there are several celebrities with large number of followers that actively promote Flat Earth pseudoscience. Although they will probably not convince that many people that the Earth is flat, they will probably be effective at spreading their general distrust of science and society.

Can it be done?

The heavy lift of this project is getting on that flight. But I've got over 14k subscribers and I think we can do this! Once the ticket is secured, the rest is what I've been doing for years. Collecting the information and putting it together in a format that is clear and compelling.
Where is this flight going?

The flight from New York has four stops: Rio Gallegos, Argentina, Perth, Australia, Beijing, and back to New York. The info can be found here (https://www.overthepoles2018.com).

During the stopovers (at minimum), I'll be broadcasting live on social media and relaying any data that was unable to be sent from in the air. Prior to the journey, I'll be setting up a website that will plot my location as I check in through the in-flight internet and setting up communications with outside supporters to relay data to them in real time.
Why $16K?

The cost of the coach ticket is $11900. Given that amount plus tax and the cost I estimate of supplying the perks and purchasing additional camera equipment, I then add a little room for the near 10% that Kickstarter will take off the top and that brings it to that value. I own all the editing equipment I would need. The only additional equipment I would need to purpose is a more compact camera and extended power sources, as my current camera equipment is too cumbersome for use in a small space like aircraft seating.
And who knows, if we raise enough, maybe I can entice a big Flat-Earther to come with me? LOL. Okay, that's not going to happen. They are already trying their best to discredit the whole trip. But maybe if we raise enough, I can upgrade to business class and stick my big frame in a better seat for the long trip.

Risks and challenges

With a project like this, there is always the possibility of something going wrong. The internet connection on the plane doesn't work. Poor weather during the flight makes exterior footage unusable. The plane crashes. There's nothing I can do to prevent those things from happening, but short of crashing, there is always data that can be gathered during the journey. The flight itself provides information as to it's location and velocity, which I will be monitoring whenever possible. I'm currently exploring other means of information gathering for the trip in order to have a variety of options

How to reason with flat earthers (it may not help though).

Thinking that the earth might be flat appears to have grown in popularity in recent years. Indeed, flat earthers are gathering for their annual conference this year in Birmingham, just two miles from a major university.

But the earth isn’t flat. Unsurprisingly, this isn’t hard to prove. But as scads of YouTube videos demonstrate, these proofs fail to convince everyone. A glance at the comments show there’s still vitriolic disagreement in some quarters.

Philosophy can explain why. Consider one, standard, flat earth line: “Can you prove the world is round?” Maybe you point to the (often artificially assembled) photos of Earth from space. Or possibly you rely on the testimony of astronauts. The flat earther knocks it all back. The standard of proof is higher, they say. You haven’t been to space. You haven’t seen the round earth.
Perhaps you then start to appeal to science. But unless you’re unusual, you probably don’t know all of the details of the scientific proofs – is it something to do with ships and horizons? Or eclipses? And even if you know the details, unless you’ve indulged existing flat earth literature you are unlikely – right here, right now – to be able to cogently, concisely and comprehensively respond to the lengthy rebuttals flat earthers will give to each and every scientific proof.

You could double down. Getting knee deep in the vloggersphere, you might learn the details of the scientific proofs as well as painstakingly spelling out each error in every flat earther’s rebuttal.
I recommend against doing that. I recommend letting philosophy do the work. I recommend “epistemic contextualism”. To understand what this is, we first must understand a familiar idea: context shift. Consider the sentence “I’m tall”. Surrounded by five year olds at a rollercoaster park, the sentence is true – after all, I can get on all the rides and they can’t. But at the try-outs for the Harlem Globetrotters, my measly 5’11" won’t cut it. So in that context, the sentence is false. Tallness is contextually sensitive. And it makes no sense to further ask whether I’m really tall or not. It only makes sense given a particular context.

Epistemic contextualists say that knowledge is the same. Imagine you’re transferring £10 to your daughter. You know her bank details. You tap them in. You send the money. But now imagine you’re transferring £50,000. Doubt sets in. Do you really know her bank details? Are you sure? Sensibly, you phone her to double check. The contextualist says that in the first case, you know her bank details. In the second case, even though nothing about you has changed, the context has. And in that case, you don’t know the details.
Moving the goalposts

That said, I claim the flat earther is doing a “Phoebe”. In one episode from Friends, Phoebe and Ross argue about evolution. Ross piles on the evidence thick and fast. Finally, Phoebe loses her temper. Can he be so unbelievably arrogant, she asks, that he can’t admit the slightest chance that he might be wrong? Sheepishly, Ross agrees that there might be a chance. Suddenly, Phoebe has him – Ross’s admission destroys his worldview. He’s a palaeontologist and, having admitted he can’t be sure about evolution, how can he “face the other science guys”?

Phoebe has (humorously) shifted context. Ross’s proof starts off relying on fossils in museums, books and articles on evolutionary biology, and so on. But Phoebe moves him to a “sceptical context” in which if there’s a hint of doubt about something – any possibility that you might be wrong – then you don’t know it at all.

Philosophers are well acquainted with these sceptical contexts. For instance, you could be plugged into the Matrix and, if you were, then every belief you had would be false. By bringing your attention to that, I put us in a sceptical context within which we don’t know much of anything. Most people, though, ignore this possibility – most people assume themselves not to be in a sceptical context.
It’s now easy to see how Ross can face the other science guys. He doesknow evolution is true in most everyday contexts. It is only in Phoebe’s weird context that Ross does not know evolution is true.

Where Flat Earthers Go Wrong

Flat earthers are pulling the same trick. They’re right that you don’t knowthe earth is round. But they’re only right in a context where testimonies of hundreds are disregarded, where widely accepted facts among the scientific community don’t count, where photographic evidence is inadmissible, and so on.

The flat earther’s argument is framed in a context where you can’t set aside the possibility that there’s a pervading global conspiracy – albeit one which somehow intermittently leaves glaring errors which give them away. In that context, you don’t know the earth is round. But in that context, nobody knows much at all and so this conclusion is simply unsurprising.
In the more everyday contexts that we care about, we can rely on testimony. We can rely on the fact that every educated physicist, cartographer and geographer never pauses to think the earth might be flat. And we are correct to rely on these things. If it was incorrect, we’d never get treated at hospitals – for in a context where we can’t trust the established laws of physics, how could we trust the judgements of medical science?

So do you know whether the earth is round? It turns out it depends on context. But in most regular contexts then, yes, you do. And that’s even though I doubt most people could prove it, right here and now.

Have you ever taken a plane at high altitude? You can see the curvature of the earth, yourself, with your own eyes.

Every airplane trajectory calculation is base on magnetic pole and curvature of the earth. Otherwise, we could not land. Based on a flat earth, you die man!

He discusses this early in the video, starting at about 1:30. To summarize in my own words, he's talking about how faster missiles tend to fly higher, and therefore can be detected by an enemy more easily as they're visible above the horizon.

But a slower missile has the advantage of being able to fly much lower, and is therefore radar-invisible to an enemy until much closer to its target — "because the Earth isn't flat". Lovely, and quite so. :)

I know from having flown over the arctic circle a few times that I didn't see the ends of the earth with the water going off the sides. I was looking out the window and I did see lots of white and snow and ice for hours. It is quite common practice for airlines to fly North close to the arctic and come down because it saves time and fuel to do do. It is much longer to go straight west from California to Japan than it is to go from cal to Alaska to Japan. It is standard to fly this way. That is because the Earth is basically a sphere than a flat map. They go North and cut back West and go South and it still saves time and miles when they do this.

I kinda think a lot of these flat earthers haven't traveled a whole lot, or maybe they close their eyes and don't look out the window when they are 35k up so they don't see the curve of the Earth.

I think we should do an experiment and charter a jet and fly at a certain latitude say 33degrees or some other less sinister degree and go All the way around the planet at that same latitude degree and maybe even have some flat earthers on board and see if we fall off the Earth when we go around.

"I don't want to be a flat Earther," David Weiss says, his voice weary as he reflects on his personal awakening. "Would you wake up in the morning and want everyone to think you're an idiot?"

But Weiss is a flat Earther. Ever since he tried and failed to find proof of the Earth's curve four years ago, he's believed with an evident passion that our planet is both flat and stationary -- and it's turned his world upside down.

"I absolutely freaked out," Weiss tells CNN in a phone interview. "It literally whips the rug out from underneath you."

Now, Weiss finds it tedious to associate with the majority of people -- though he "unfortunately" still has some friends who believe in a round Earth. "I have no problem with anybody that wants to believe we live on a ball. That's their choice," he says. "It's just not something I resonate with."

Weiss' preferred community is those who share his life-altering belief.

And that community is vast.

This week, the businessman attended the third annual Flat Earth International Conference, held at an Embassy Suites hotel in suburban Dallas, Texas. Organizers told CNN that about 600 others went too.

Previous conferences have taken place in Raleigh and Denver -- while Brazil, Britain and Italy have also held flat-Earth conventions in recent years.

The event's schedule resembled any corporate conference, with some fairly noticeable twists. Speakers gave presentations including "Space is Fake" and "Testing The Moon: A Globe Lie Perspective." Awards for the year's best flat Earth-related videos were handed out. And believers reveled in an opportunity to meet several of the movement's most influential minds.

"We've all been communicating online (but) this brings us together so we can shake hands and give each other hugs," says Weiss. "We can collaborate, we can make new friends. Because guess what, our old friends... we lost a lot of friends."

On a clear day, the curvature of the Earth can be seen from an airplane window. But remarkably, the hundreds of flat Earthers at the Dallas gathering were just a small portion of the movement.

People in every pocket of this spherical planet are rejecting science and spreading the word that the Earth is flat.

There's no clear study indicating how many people have been convinced -- and flat Earthers like Weiss will tell you without evidence there are millions more in the closet anyway, including Hollywood A-listers and commercial airline pilots -- but online communities have hundreds of thousands of followers and YouTube is inundated with flat-Earth content creators, whose productions reach millions.

A YouGov survey of more than 8,000 American adults suggested last year that as many as one in six Americans are not entirely certain the world is round, while a 2019 Datafolha Institute survey of more than 2,000 Brazilian adults indicated that 7% of people in that country reject that concept, according to local media.

The flat-Earth community has its own celebrities, music, merchandise -- and a weighty catalog of pseudo-scientific theories. It's been the subject of a Netflix documentary and has been endorsed by figures including the rapper B.o.B (https://www.cnn.com/2017/09/25/us/b-o-b-flat-earth-gofundme-trnd/index.html).

Each year, more flat-Earth events fill the calendar, organizers say.

"I've never seen anything grow this fast," says Robbie Davidson, the founder of the Dallas conference. "I would say that within 10 years, the numbers are going to be astounding... next year, there's going to be a conference in every major country in the world."

But experts are wondering if the movement is really harmless -- and whether we're even approaching the edge of its influence.

Falling off the edge

When Davidson first heard that people really do believe in a flat Earth, "I just laughed and said, 'they've got to be the stupidest people ever.' Who in their right mind could believe something so dumb?"

A couple of years later, Davidson was setting up the first international flat Earth conference. Like most of the speakers at the event CNN spoke to, he was convinced after he decided he couldn't prove the Earth's roundness.

For Davidson, a born-again Christian, the most logical explanation for the conspiracy of the millennium goes like this: "Let's just say there is an adversary, there is a devil, there is a Satan. His whole job would be to try to convince the world that God doesn't exist. He's done an incredible job convincing people with the idea that we're just on a random speck in an infinite universe."

The reality, says Davidson, is that the flat Earth, sun, moon and stars are contained in a "Truman Show"-like dome. From there, pitfalls can be easily dismissed -- like photos of the Earth from space, which flat Earthers believe are photoshopped. "This all goes away if they put a 24/7 camera feed on the moon," he adds.

And Davidson quickly found a large online community believing the same thing. "I thought doing a conference would just take it to the next stage where the media and the world will look at it and say, 'wait a minute -- something must be going on. This is not just some internet fad, or a bunch of crazy people online. They're now meeting in buildings.'"

He has a few things he wants to make clear to a flat-Earth novice. Firstly, and most importantly -- "none of us believe that we're a flying pancake in space." The community merely believes that space does not exist, the world sits still and the moon landing was faked. The jury is out on gravity -- but as Davidson notes, no one has ever seen it.

Secondly -- no, you won't fall off the edge. While flat Earthers' views of the world vary, most believe the planet is a circular disk with Antarctica acting as an ice wall barrier around the edge.

And thirdly, modern flat Earthers have little in common with the Flat Earth Society, a group that has existed for decades and has more than 200,000 followers on Facebook.

That organization, some speakers told CNN, is a government-controlled body designed to pump out misinformation and make the flat-Earth cause sound far-fetched to curious minds. Davidson calls their theories "completely ridiculous."

The Flat Earth Society told CNN: "We are not a government-controlled body. We're an organization of Flat Earth theorists that long predates most of the FEIC newcomers to the scene."

"It probably goes without saying that we find no joy in this sectarianism, or the elevated emotions that surround some of our disagreements," the group added in response to criticism from speakers at the conference. "We wish the Flat Earth International Conference organizers all the best, but we remain steadfast in our own convictions."

But flat Earthers don't pretend to have all the answers. "People don't really know 100% what (the Earth) is, we're just questioning what we're being told it is," Davidson explains.

Several members of the community have carried out their own experiments, like bringing spirit levels onto airplanes, that have supposedly proved their thesis.

They haven't. To be absolutely clear, the Earth is not flat -- as NASA explains in a fact sheet (https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/5-8/features/nasa-knows/what-is-earth-58.html)aimed at fifth to eighth graders.

But most adherents say they're just curious, as all good scientific minds should be. "We love science," Davidson insists.

'It's difficult to break out of that mindset'

Still, most adherents demonstrate plenty of anti-scientific tendencies. It's hard to find a flat Earther who doesn't believe most other conspiracies under the sun; a flat-Earth conference is invariably also a gathering of anti-vaxxers, 9/11 truthers and Illuminati subscribers, to name a few.

It's that hyper-skeptical mindset that helps flat earthers answer the big questions -- like who's hiding the true shape of the planet from us?

"The ruling elite, from the royal family to the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds ... all of those groups that run the world, they're in on it," says Weiss.

But "once you get into flat earth, the other (conspiracy theories) get knocked down into another tier," says Mark Sargent, a filmmaker and stalwart of the movement who was featured in the 2018 Netflix documentary "Behind the Curve."

"Everybody here, they've got their top 20 conspiracies -- and you could walk around door to door and those top 20 would differ from person to person. But everybody's number one is always flat Earth," he tells CNN.

It helps that the group has a mutual target. "Most of our ire is pointed towards NASA. That's our bread and butter," Sargent says of the agency flat Earthers believe is ultimately behind the conspiracy.

But why, and how, could people believe a conspiracy theory so out of this universe?

"People, in essence, are just trying to understand the world," says Daniel Jolley, a senior lecturer in the psychology of conspiracy theories at the UK's Northumbria University. "And they're looking at the world in a gaze where they're biased in their thinking."

"They may have distrust towards powerful people or groups, which could be the government or NASA, and when they look towards evidence that makes sense to them ... this world view (is) endorsed," he says. "It's difficult to break out of that mindset."

Scientists have also noted that a social motive draws people to conspiracy theories -- the desire to "maintain a positive view of the self and the groups we belong to," as social psychologist Karen Douglas of the University of Kent says.

And few groups have as strong a community as flat Earthers.

"This (conference) is an outlet for a lot of people that might otherwise get ostracized by friends and family and co-workers. When they come here, they know it's absolutely a safe space," Sargent says of this week's event.

But perhaps the most important driver is an underlying need for power and control. "People want to feel safe and secure in the world," Douglas says. And power comes from knowledge -- no matter how questionable it may be.

"When you find out the Earth is flat ... then you become empowered," Weiss says.

That feeling helps believers to understand the world better, as they see it. "You feel like you've got a better handle on life and the universe. It's now more manageable," adds Sargent.

'It's not going to harm anyone'

Sargent could arguably be regarded as the godfather of the modern flat-Earth movement. "If you got into flat Earth, there's a really high chance you read into my stuff first," he tells CNN.

But he had help -- it was the advent of YouTube that gave him a platform to spread his own views, which he says the movement "wouldn't exist without."

"Flat Earth was a binge watch on YouTube," he adds, aided by algorithms and personalized recommendations that turned flat earth research into a never-ending rabbit hole.

Earlier this year, YouTube started burying those videos (https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/25/tech/youtube-conspiracy-video-recommendations/index.html)and reducing recommendations of "borderline content," but video makers like Sargent feel it no longer makes much difference. "Anything on social media is always going to be helpful if it goes viral, right?" adds Davidson. "Well flat Earth has gone viral."

CNN has contacted YouTube for comment.

But the alleged rapid growth of a movement so enthusiastically rejecting fundamental scientific beliefs does have some worried.

"It seems that increasingly, people don't trust scientists and experts, or their motives," Douglas says. "More research needs to be done in this area, and I'm sure there are some positive consequences to believing in conspiracy theories, but early indications suggests that they are more harm than help."

"I don't say this often, but look -- there is a downside," admits Sargent, reflecting on the movement he helped encourage. "There's a side effect to flat Earth ... once you get into it, you automatically revisit any of your old skepticism."

"I don't think they're just linked," Sargent says of flat Earthers and populists. "They kind of feed each other ... it's a slippery slope when you think that the government has been hiding these things. All of a sudden, you become one of those people that's like, 'can you trust anything on mainstream media?'"

For Davidson, the next stage is to debate leading members of the scientific community, but "they just laugh at us and say, 'you guys are dumb.'"

But he's not deterred.

"It's touching everyone ... it's not going away, and it's not going to slow down," Davidson says of the movement. "This thing is out of the can."

I must say, besides the supposed popularity of this "conspiracy" that is being heavily promoted/shilled by the media, I really haven't met anyone personally who buys it beyond a cursory look-see, thank goodness. Perhaps the popularity of this conspiracy itself is an manufactured illusion.

The day I found out I was so outraged, because I love my homeland,and from all the history that has ground this country and through what has passed and remained standing the idea that the Earth is flat would have been the most offensive address to the Spirit of my Country and I would not have easily bear such an emblem.

I don't know if this has been posted before in this thread, but Pythagoras was not the first person to suggest a spherical earth. The idea that the earth is round and all that comes with it is ancient, and it's the flat earth theory that in fact is new.
