I am curious about the phenomenon of hoarding and what causes it. Is it related to OCD? And if it is, it begs the question, does OCD have a spiritual component to it?
Would love to hear some opinions on this! Thanks

I once read an article required for a Psychology class that was very useful to me in understanding OCD. It talked about how many OCD behaviors were also behaviors that would have helped in survival in earlier times. Also, it mentioned that OCD is a continuum, not an on/off switch so we all have these tendencies to some degree. In a similar way, hoarding (not wasting) may have been a beneficial tendency in a more agrarian or hunter/gatherer society. In my own life, I feel tendencies to hold on to things are rooted in a traumatic time in my life when I had to flee a bad situation and leave almost everything behind. Also, I am somewhat of a casual Prepper, but not organized enough to actually be prepared for disaster! So we could survive for a while if society collapsed, but it would be a bit of a scramble at first.

People who feel that their survival is threatened by their lack of preparation to survive in the world use hoarding as a security blanket. You can't blame them; however, they are indiscriminate about what they hoard, accumulating junk which hinders them instead of helping them. Hello Autumn.

I've watched the hoarding program and some people develop the disorder after the loss of a relationship. The accumulation of stuff seems to provide comfort. I think it can also act as fulfillment if a person had very little growing up. I don't know about the spiritual aspect, but it's possible it can be carried over from issues in a past life. It's widely believed people can have physical marks where they were wounded in a previous life.

i have not seen spiritual components in hoardng, on the contrary, holding tight to material stuff and wanting to cumulate more and more is far from a free spirit. Hoarding is pretty much a me myself and I emotional behavior. OCD are not always hoarders but many are.
Some people hoard stuff, other hoard money such as Bill Gate, Warren Buffet, etc. THis is, to me, a similar disease but hoarders have heart and do not necessarily have psychopathic tendencies. While cabal has.

Speaking personally, my OCD is centred in my anxieties and need to control what little I can in life. I am not a hoarder, and dislike clutter, with the exception of a well stocked pantry due to food insecurity as a child. I feel that my OCD has kept me from spiritual connection because it has me believe that order of the material world or the order of my part in it can bring me security and happiness. Which of course it can't! Although I feel I am a spiritual person I think OCD is a barrier to that type of connection.
