“We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly. But my treatment is going terrifically well, so I’m optimistic,” he added.

I would like to make a statement. I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer,” the statement read. “I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.”

The star, whose career spanned over six decades, was best known for his roles in 1980’s Elephant Man, for which he received his second Oscar nomination, and as wandmaker Mr. Ollivander in three of the Harry Potter films.

Most recently, Hurt starred alongside Natalie Portman in the Oscar-nominated Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis film, Jackie.

Hurt was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in December 2014.

Close friend Richard E. Grant was heartbroken by the news, tweeting, “So so sad to have lost such an extraordinary talent and friend. Sir John Hurt. R. I. P.”

Hurt was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, but later said he was clear of the disease.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014 and spoke to PEOPLE about his role in The Elephant Man.

“The role stretched me to the limits,” he said of the latter film. Most recently, Hurt starred alongside Natalie Portman in the Oscar-nominated Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis film Jackie.

Very sad news - we have to expect that our heroes will pass, many of them are baby boomers or older - but it is always sad to hear about your favorite people leaving us. RIP John Hurt, one of the finest actors of his generation.

The last few moments of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four seem like they’d be impossible to put on film. In them, Winston Smith, who previously questioned everything he knew about the totalitarian society he lives in and nearly became a revolutionary, has been broken. The book’s final sentences — “He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother” — are a chilling climax, but they’re so internal. How do you translate that to a movie screen?

Truth be told, this film version of the book, with Hurt as Winston, cheats a little bit, having him whisper “I love you” in voiceover after looking at an image of Big Brother. But it doesn’t feel like too much because of the sheer, shattered emptiness on Hurt’s face.

You really believe this is a guy who’s been torn apart at the seams, who’s realized just how all-encompassing the nightmare he lives in has become.

A look back at the life of Sir John Hurt

Sir John Hurt's wife, Anwen, has led tributes to the veteran actor after he died at the age of 77.

The Bafta-winning star, known for his roles in Alien and The Elephant Man, had been treated
for pancreatic cancer in 2015.

Sir John's wife said he had brought "joy and magic" and it would be a "strange world without him".

He recently starred as Father Richard McSorley in Jackie, the biopic of President John F Kennedy's wife.

Despite being given the all-clear from cancer, he last year pulled out of Sir Kenneth Branagh's
production of The Entertainer on the advice of his doctors.

Lady Hurt confirmed Sir John had died on Wednesday at his home in Norfolk.

"John was the most sublime of actors and the most gentlemanly of gentlemen with the greatest
of hearts and the most generosity of spirit," she said in a statement.

"He touched all our lives with joy and magic and it will be a strange world without him."

US director Mel Brooks described Sir John as "cinematic immortality", as tributes poured in for the star.

Brooks paid tribute to Sir John, who had starred in his comedy Spaceballs, saying on Twitter:
"No one could have played The Elephant Man more memorably."

He added: "He carried that film into cinematic immortality. He will be sorely missed."

Sir John also played the part of wand-maker Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter films.

Author of the books, JK Rowling, tweeted: "So very sad to hear that the immensely talented and
deeply beloved John Hurt has died. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

What a brilliant actor!

He embodied his characters and disappeared in them, making the performances not only fully credible but indelible.

To the audience, it is the talent that matters. To his colleagues, it is the talent and the personality. I've head he was wonderful to work with - an exemplary person.

May he dwell in a place as bright as he!
