This year's winter solstice on Tuesday will fall on the same day as a full lunar eclipse for the first time in 456 years.
The rare, 72-minute lunar eclipse — when the sun, the Earth and the moon align — will begin in the early morning hours on Dec. 21 in North America, and should cast an amber glow on snowy landscapes, said NASA.
The moon will pass through the darkest part of the Earth's shadow.
Tuesday marks the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere, and the winter solstice begins in the evening at 6:38 p.m. ET, which is 8:08 p.m. NT, 7:38 p.m. AT, 5:38 p.m. CT, 4:38 p.m. MT, and 3:38 p.m. PT.
Scientists said the last time a full lunar eclipse coincided with the winter solstice was in AD 1554. NASA forecasts that at 1:33 a.m. ET on Tuesday, "Earth's shadow will appear as a dark red bite at the edge of the lunar disk."
After roughly an hour, that "bite" will eventually grow to cover the whole moon. That stage, known as "totality," will probably start at 2:41 a.m. ET and last 72 minutes.
As for the best time to witness the cosmic event, NASA suggests being outside at 3:17a.m., "when the moon will be in deepest shadow, displaying the most fantastic shades of coppery red."
Although the arrival of the solstice cannot be seen, the moment describes the instant when the Earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun, resulting in the shortest day of the year as well as the longest night of the year.

Why moon will appear red
If you were to stand on the moon's surface looking up at the sky, you would see Earth hanging above, nightside down, and completely hiding the sun behind it.
Rather than being completely dark, the Earth's rim would appear as if it were on fire. Around its circumference, you would be seeing every sunrise and every sunset in the world at the same time.
This surrounding light will actually beam right into Earth's shadow, giving it a rusty glow.
From the Earth, the moon would appear as a giant red orb because the only sunlight visible is refracted through the Earth's atmosphere.

Something I always look forward to experiencing, more than Christmas over the years. That marks two years before the picked Mayan Calendar Date Dec 21st, 2012. Where all the lenses to the Kuxan Suum are supposed to line up and we enter a galactic transformation. I wonder if the whole planet will make a more dramatic shift towards a more harmonic way of living on Mother Earth? Seems remote watching the News and seeing what's around me and all. But who knows.

A rare event. A full lunar eclipse will occur on the Winter Solstice this year.
The last time this happened was in the year 1378.
Whether the moon is hollow or not, whether the moon is artificial or not, we do know it affects our tides and since the human body is something like 70% water, there are many of us that believe it also has an affect on us.
Since lunar eclipses tend to be about releasing emotional bonds, it could mean an opportunity for a fresh start. What are you willing to release? A grudge, a pain, a person or idea that no longer serves your higher good. Or possible the acts of controlling or judging others.
Lets join hearts and hands and let out one big sigh of release!

Maybe its my math, but how is it going to be?
The OP says this is the first eclipse on midwintersolstice in 456 years and another post says its the first since 1378, wich makes it differ 176 years.
So who is right?

(from Jean Hudon's Earthrainbownetwork compilation)_
Winter Solstice
Perhaps for a moment the typewriters will stop clicking, the wheels stop rolling the computers desist from computing, and a hush will fall over the city.
For an instant, in the stillness, the chiming of the celestial spheres will be heard as Earth hangs poised in the crystalline darkness, and then gracefully tilts.
Let there be a season when holiness is heard, and the splendor of living is revealed.
Stunned to stillness by beauty, we remember who we are and why we are here.
There are inexplicable mysteries.
We are not alone.
In the universe there moves a Wild One whose gestures alter Earth's axis toward Love.
In the immense darkness everything spins with joy.
The cosmos enfolds us.
We are caught in a web of stars, cradled in a swaying embrace, rocked by the holy night, babes of the universe.
Let this be the time we wake to life, like spring wakes, in the moment of winter solstice

hear hear! People have to start LISTENING to source, really LISTENING, not just paying lip-service....
If humanity would just accept that source is all around us and within us, then a quantum leap in humanitys' consciousness would have been made.

Interesting this is... i have heard many peoples saying that this alignment is very important... and some even saying that its Dec 21 2010 , NOT 2012 that is the big "event" ....
( not fear mongering here , just putting it out there what i have been hearing.)
For astro buffs its a pretty interesting time also ,
http://www.mydailyastrology.net/join/news/lunar-eclipse-december-21-2010
This caught my attention earlier today , from the above site.....
This full moon in Gemini is very significant both astronomically and astrologically. First of all, having both Brahmins (Jupiter and Venus) powerful is a good thing. However, the Nakshatras of Mula and Ardra are pretty transformative/destructive sections of the sky – 911 happened the last time the Nodes were in the Ardra/Mula axis.
The Moon passing from Mrigashira to Ardra Nakshatra is the same transit that happened on 911, Hurricane Katrina, The Tsunami and many other natural tragedies.
And we all know how TPW like their dates and times, its possible they are planning another false flag, of course whether they pull it off is entirely another matter....
Even those in the "Revelations camp" have been having "fun" with this period too, (and no im not one of these so please don't shoot the messenger, lol)
The blood red moon gets a mention in this passage....
http://bible.cc/revelation/6-12.htm
I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood.
I must confer though, that's its certainly very interesting energetically speaking, very intense, pregnant or emergence type energies im feeling , i have been quite on edge all week, like im waiting for something to arrive.
Its going to be an interesting few days.

According to Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory:
Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on 2094 DEC 21.
That would make it 372 years ago. The next one will be in 84 years.

Hi All,
I'd like to relate something that happened to me back in 2005 and was wondering if anybody had the same experience. On Dec 21st of 2005 I was aware of a huge eye opening up in my auric field and then I experienced eyes opening up everywhere. According to my internal awareness Loreena McKennit the Celtic singer from Ireland was the the next person who's "auric eye" popped open. I have no physical proof of this. Then a legendary hillbilly singer who lives in or near the National Forest's in the state of Washington who's name I can't recall at the moment experienced it next according to my internal awareness and then eyes started popping up everywhere as if the earth was getting ready to awaken. Things were getting better for awhile but then they became incredibly worse. I'm currently hoping and praying that things get better. Hi wynderer, you were the first person I experienced a huge eye opening up when we were at the potato chip aisle at Wal-Mart on October 31st (Halloween) of the same year (2005). While we were talking I witnessed a huge eye opening up in your auric field. I considered that the first "Cosmic Eye" opening up according to how I experienced it. I hope you don't mind if I mentioned this wynderer but I've never mentioned this to anyone until now. I was wondering if you or anyone else experienced the same thing and maybe this was a sign that the earth was going to open it's eye to the rest of the infinite eternal Universes out there? Or was it "Just My Imagination" running away with me?

I just realised that this coming lunar eclipse is in my starsign! So that's why I've been enegetically all over the place of late...I've been really agitated and fired-up. Also, this year has to have been one of thr WORST years of my life... I've had so much happening...... But I feel like this eclipse is going to bring a releaase. Things are going to get back to "normal" for me in a way. Yet, at a global level I think the energies this eclipse will release will bring about a lot of change. Universal awareness is coming. It won't be so much the end of the world as the end of a world (age) and the beginning of another.
I'm getting the feeling that this is the age of the christ-in-man......
Which is good, as one of the best ways possible for us to avoid what the PTW have in store for us is to TRANSCEND the possibility - to evolve past the level where these events can have control over us - which is just what we're about to do. We'll literally evolve into a new timeline where the events are not possible....
Anyone agree?

Overnight total lunar eclipse coincides with winter solstice
December 20, 2010
From 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, depending on cloud cover, a total lunar eclipse will the visible across the United States.
According to Dr. Tony Phillips of NASA, the eclipse will start at 12:33 a.m. CDT, when the full moon begins to pass through the Earth's shadow, blocking the sun's light which would be normally illuminating the moon.
"At that time," Phillips said, "the Earth's shadow will appear as a dark-red bite at the edge of the lunar disk. It takes about an hour for the "bite" to expand and swallow the entire moon."
Phillips recommends that if you are only going to take one quick look, the moment to choose is at 2:17 a.m. CDT. The "totality phase," he said, will last for 72 minutes.
"That's when," Phillips said, "the moon will be in deepest shadow, displaying the most fantastic shades of coppery red."
While total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common, Phillips said, with three in the past ten years along, "A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual."

The moon appears totally covered by shadow as the Earth passes between the moon and the sun, during the lunar eclipse in this Jan. 9, 2001 file photo taken in Kiel, Germany. On Tuesday Dec. 21, 2010 the first day of northern winter, the full moon passes almost dead-center through Earth's shadow. The eclipse begins at 12:33 am CDT. At that time, earth's shadow will appear as a dark-red bite at the edge of the lunar disk. It takes about an hour for the "bite" to expand and swallow the entire moon. Totality commences at 1:41 am CDT and lasts for 72 minutes. According to NASA the last total lunar eclipse that happened on the winter solstice was Dec. 21, 1638. The next one will Dec. 21, 2094.

Just a reminder: Energy is neutral (neither good or bad). It's what we do with it that makes a difference. We can choose to get agitated, or we can choose to dance blissfully - or create something beautiful or destroy something beautiful - we can use it to meditate more deeply or scream abuses at those around us. CHOICE ALWAYS CHOICE. Knowing the energy that's coming, helps us to chose more wisely.

Which is why it is always a very good idea to pursue knowledge of one's own individual astrological patterns of unfolding.
I can feel this moon now. It's pretty powerful. Obviously. To me, in my cycles of life (everyone will feel and interpret this moon differently), this one is not inherently stressing me in a negative way or overt emotional manner that is difficult. Which is nice. Some will get it coming at them harder than others will.

Sounds like me when I'm on LSD. All semi-joking humor aside, this is why some feel they need to try such things...they do it to try and see the world from a different angle and this gain a better stereoscopic view of reality's shape. Thusly, they gain insight. At least that's why there are more university professors making LSD than anyone else, from what I know of these things.
Obviously, not for everyone. But in order to stay on topic, I can state my reason for mentioning it in the first place, which is:
That some of you will feel like you are on drugs. Enjoy the ride, it does not come along that often.

I totally agree with you there. This year has been my absolute worst like I've never experienced before. Whatever I do and which ever way I turn I get a brick wall in my face. But this is going to sound strange but its as if I'm living in two timelines right now, and being stuck in the middle. But just when I seem to be facing disaster something happens that gets me out of the proverbial.

Hello AlkaMyst,
SOLSTICE LUNAR ECLIPSE - Tonight - December 20th/21st
The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere this year will begin in a very special way, especially for the people in North America.
If you're anywhere in North America you will get a perfect view of the full Lunar Eclipse.
The full Moon will pass almost dead-center through Earth's shadow. "For 72 minutes an amber light will play across the snows of North America, throwing landscapes into an unusual state of ruddy shadow" (NASA).
The eclipse begins on Tuesday morning, December 21st at 1:33 am New York time, which is Monday, December 20th at 10:33 pm Los Angeles time.
Although it won't be visible in Australia or the UK - the energy will still be very powerful and so the eclipse will begin at 4.33pm Tuesday December 21st Queensland time and 5.33pm Eastern Daylight time in Australia; and Tuesday 6.33am GMT.
The peak of the eclipse when the entire Moon is covered commences at 02:41 am New York time (11:41 pm PST) and lasts for 72 minutes.
You people up there are sooooo lucky to be able to see it all.

Same here! My home looked like a lunatic asylum last night. All running around agitated, fighting, misbehaving, defying us. Our backyard chickens are silent and refusing fresh corn. As far as the monkeys... I had insomnia, terrible insomnia. My husband and I had a senseless argument. This is going to be powerful stuff. Forewarned is forearmed? Best get ourselves to a calm, serene and aware state, pretty quickly
Watching animals for clues as to what is ahead is not to be sneezed at... remember the tsunami, and how all the animals ran for the hills way in advance??
In Shamanistic terms animals play a big role for us here on earth , both in the physical and as guides, they are said to give us power and protection.
I have certainly learnt so much over the years from my fur family !!
This is a VERY strong moon, i woke up feel very "heady" lots of pressure in my head and sort of disorientated, i thinking its a good time to be grounded,
and at the same time for us to assist in anchoring some of these new energies here on earth.

I know exactly what you are saying. There are times when I feel guilty about observing and witnessing. Although, I do what I can and when, to help those around me. We desire change at our root levels. We are receiving change in all things-everywhere.

Today, midwinter, is the day that the Light returns :) Blessed be, Dutchess Tint.

PHOTOS: Rare Lunar Eclipse Seen From Around The World
December 21, 2010
Last Monday night or early Tuesday morning, depending on your location, many around the world were able to witness a phenomenal and rare total lunar eclipse, watching as the Earth passed directly between the sun and the full moon, shrouding it in shadow and transforming the white image into a stunning deep red glow. The event was especially significant as it coincided with the winter solstice, something that hasn't occurred in 372 years, and won't come around again until 2094.
