This footage is real but I not sure of what it is, the source is the director of the volcan city in south Réunion Island, not so far from Antartica...

What are these flying objects that were inscribed in the sky of Saint-Leu in the late afternoon last Sunday? The aerial ballet apparently had few witnesses but the chance that put Patrice Huet to the front rows to attend the show briefly did well.
Scientific Director of the Volcano City, Patrice Huet is as passionate about volcanology as he is astronomy enthusiast. Observing heaven is second nature to him. Whether he has immortalized this strange phenomenon, gives particular weight to this observation insofar as we are in the presence of a credible witness who leaves no room for sensationalism or manipulation.

A similar photograph elsewhere (http://www.ipreunion.com/archives/reportage/0000/00/00/ipreunion,reportage,2929.html) came with the explanation..

Many motorists driving along the coastal road saw a strange trail of fire in the sky this Monday, December 11, 2006 around 6:45 pm. The 'thing' was moving very slowly. UFO, chariot of Santa Claus (it's seasonal)? Nothing of the sort...
It was a plane flying over the island at very high altitude in the direction of distant horizons. It is the reflections of the sun ready to lie that created the optical illusion of a trail of fire.
No visits of little green men nor Santa Claus (it's too early to see), but a beautiful show anyway.
Note: The second source is also linked to Reunion, may be a debunking effort. Don't know.

Maybe a plane starting from St Pierre... Merci Ewan!
Here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?96435-This-is-something-new) is a similar thread and perhaps it give some answers.
Is sad that Mr. Huet have only photographed the "object" and offered very summarized explanations. Is interesting that these reports came out from somehow remote zones (Tasmania,Réunion Island).

I see these all the time. Yes indeed just planes.
Light from a low sun (sunset / winter / north or south pole) that is already over the horizon still shines on the atmosphere just above the ground (because of the sphere earth shape -- the land is dark but sunlight is still streaming through the air -- but you just can't see it until it bounces off something). The two trailing shafts are contrails from the exhaust of the plane engines -- they are brightly lit orange because the sunlight from low or just over the horizon is tinted orange (sunset / sunrise) and thus you get bright orange trailing contrails (after the sun has gone beyond the horizon from the ground) with a small "UFO" at the head - which is just the plane.
I live near an international airport, and my city is in the great plains where the sun just over the horizon can still neatly and extensively light the entire air after sun has set, so these phenomenon are very common in my city. If I watched for just one or two days just before or just after sunset (granted the sky is clear), I could easily get photos that look identical to these. I am generally lazy so I probably won't do this unless someone really doubts me and challenges me to prove them wrong. :)
I am 100% certain on this. No doubt whatsoever, seen it many many times - exactly the same as these photos. Sorry to be a party pooper, but "mysterious" craft, these are not them ...

I've seen the orange contrails and even rainbow irridescence from unburnt or jettisoned fuel but in some of these image the craft look quite stunted and triangular, which of course does not preclude them from still being planes. I wouldn't go to 100%, though I'm quite sure 'tech' craft from wherever don't leave contrails so it doesn't really leave room for much else. :)

Simply angle and perspective of view. When the plane is flying away from you, the contrails (actually covering possibly kms in length) appear short, like when you turn to angle a pencil more perpendicular to your eye - it appears shorter. At great distance your eyes cannot detect distance differentials (depth), therefore on a very far away object like a contrail you get the "shortness" but your eyes cannot get the distance difference so your brain sees a short "rocket trail" out of the contrail. Again the orange colour is just from a freshly set (sunset) or pre-sunrise which makes bright orange light that bounces off the contrails. The triangular effect is perspective -- the distance between the contrails will appear to increase as the get closer to the eye due to the km long distance perpendicular to your eye, which appears to be very short due to that perpendicularity. Therefore in the cases where you see a "triangle -- you know the plane is flying away from you.
100% explainable. :)
