Police are scouring an Old East Dallas neighborhood where a paramedic was shot Monday morning. The paramedic was in critical condition at Baylor Medical Center. A neighbor was also shot and is in stable condition.

The suspect is armed with a rifle, according to media reports.

The firefighter was shot around 11:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of Reynolds Avenue, near Dolphin Road. The firefighter is an 11-year veteran of the department.

Our colleagues at KXAS-TV (NBC5) report that Dallas-Fire Rescue was responding to a call for help from the gunman's wife or girlfriend. When paramedics pulled up, the man opened fire, critically wounding the firefighter and shooting a neighbor who was standing outside in the arm.

Anna Hill, president of the neighborhood association tweeted a description of the shooter and told everyone to "be safe and look out." The shooter was described as bald black male in a green shirt in jeans. He walks with a limp.

Dallas Fire Rescue confirmed the shooting in a tweet and said there would be "no detail at this time. Thoughts and prayers are with all impacted."


Helicopters hovered above, likely searching for the shooter. The Dallas police gang unit is in the neighborhood. Officers were crouched behind police cars and armed with rifles.

A woman who lives in 3200 block of Reynolds said she started getting calls and texts from neighbors around noon about a shooting. Some of her neighbors remained in their homes as police searched for the shooter.

The surrounding intersections are shut down and people should stay inside their homes.

The firefighter was surgery at may have been hit multiple times. Acting Dallas Police Chief David Pughes is at Baylor.

Police cars and fire trucks parked around the perimeter of the emergency department at Baylor in downtown Dallas. Police and fire gathered outside, standing in uniform outside of the ambulance entrance. Yellow caution tape blocked off the area.
