A parcel bomb exploded at the Chilean embassy in Rome on Thursday, just hours after a mailed package exploded at the Swiss embassy in the Italian capital. The two employees who opened the parcels at the embassies were injured. By News Wires (text)
A pair of package bombs exploded at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome on Thursday, injuring the two people who opened them, police and news reports said. There was no claim of responsibility but authorities discounted domestic anarchists or protesters.

Witnesses outside the Chilean embassy said they heard a blast shortly after 3 p.m., sending police to the scene. The ANSA news agency said the person who opened the package was wounded.

Three hours earlier, a package bomb exploded inside an office in the Swiss Embassy, seriously wounding the staffer who opened it. He was taken to the hospital with hand injuries.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, speaking outside the Swiss Embassy, said the motive of the Swiss attack appeared to be international as opposed to domestic in nature, distinguishing the blast from the fake bomb that was discovered on a Rome subway earlier this week.

Rome : attentats contre trois ambassades (Update)

Police in Rome are on high alert

Italian police have been searching embassies and consular offices in Rome after parcel bombs exploded at the Swiss and Chilean missions.

A Swiss member of staff at the Swiss embassy received serious hand injuries while one person was slightly hurt at the Chilean embassy.

Both had been opening packages when they exploded.

Italian police are investigating a possible anarchist link to the blasts, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said.

A suspect package was also reported at the Ukrainian embassy but no dangerous items were found, the embassy told Reuters news agency.

Parcel bombs were sent to embassies in the Greek capital Athens last month but there was no immediate suggestion of a link.
'Wave of terrorism'

A spokeswoman for the Swiss embassy said the explosion there had occurred around midday (1100 GMT).

The embassy is located on via Barnaba Oriani near Villa Glori Park, to the north of the city centre.

The person hurt at the Chilean embassy did not suffer serious injuries.

That embassy is located on the via Po near the Villa Borghese in central Rome.

The Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, said: "It's a wave of terrorism against embassies, something much more worrisome than a single attack."

The Italian authorities were following an "international path" in their investigations, he added.

According to the centre-right Italian daily Corriere della Sera, initial police investigations at the Swiss embassy were "targeting anarchistic circles of eco-terrorist extraction".

"Detectives are assessing various hypotheses, including that of an attack planned by anarchist-insurrectionist movements connected with the jailing of several anarchist exponents currently held in Swiss prisons," the paper said.

A suspected bomb was found on an empty underground train in Rome on Tuesday. The device lacked a detonator and tests showed it contained no explosive.

Anti-government protests have gripped Italy over the past week, with Rome the scene of some of the most serious rioting.

Italy reports: Anarchists claim embassy blasts

Italy reports: Anarchists claim embassy blasts
Associated Press, 12.23.10, 03:41 PM EST

ROME -- Italian news reports say a claim by an Italian anarchist group was found at the site of one of the twin embassy package bomb blasts in Rome.

The ANSA news agency said Thursday night that the written claim was made by the Italian Anarchist Federation. Anti-terrorism police officers at Rome police headquarters declined to comment on the report.

The group has long been known in Italy and has a Web site calling for the end of what it says is man's exploitation of fellow man. Earlier, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said the blasts at the Swiss and Chilean embassies were likely the work of anarchists. Two employees - one at each embassy - were seriously wounded when opening mail.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

ROME (AP) - Mail bombs exploded in the hands of employees at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome on Thursday, seriously wounding two people and triggering heightened security checks at diplomatic missions just as holiday deliveries deluge their mailrooms.

Italian investigators suspected the attacks were the work of anarchists, similar to the two-day wave of mail bombs that targeted several embassies in Athens last month - including those of Chile and Switzerland. One of last month's booby-trapped packages, addressed to Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, was intercepted in Italy.
