These ground based calculators were all built for spiritual purposes and this series discusses this finding. Great topic.

The gentleman in the video seems like a nice man, but his scholarship is very much lacking. He is presenting a mix of correct information, speculation, some falsehoods, and myths. Shambhala is certainly a subject worth investigating, I'm just saying that if you're really interested, use this video as a jumping off point rather than authoritative information.

Thurman, who taught at Amherst and Columbia, not Harvard (he attended Harvard, but was not a professor there), wrote on the subject in 1992 A Glimpse of Shambhala which is hard to find now.

Chagyam Trungpa wrote "Shambhala: Sacred Path of the Warrior" which is easy to find. This is more a treatise on the "Way of Shambhala". Like with so many other things, Shambhala cannot be sought out as a goal unto itself. The way to Shambhala lies within.

In a similar vein, Sakyong Mipham gave us The Shambhala Principle : Discovering Humanity's Hidden Treasure which is easy to find and I highly recommend.

Much of what the west has heard of Shambhala came forth from Blavatsky. From what I have read of her accounts, she did know what she was talking about. Probably passed to her by Djwal Kuhl. Prior to that, I suspect that the tales of Shambhala which were in circulation became mixed and blended with Pure Land Buddhism as it gained greater popularity in the 10th century.

There is much about Shambhala that is held closely within the sacred lineage schools. Like with a lot of other things, this information is held close because it would be a distraction to the uninitiated and do much more harm than good.
