They are ring based, meaning that key to the mass cancellation effect is the process of accelerating some material in liquid form inside of a ring and it is the process of controlling the velocity, angle and direction of this rotating liquid that makes the craft able to levitate at various altitudes and move in various directions.
This is a neat solution, then there are other UFOs you have seen where the entire outer shell is spinning to cause the levitation.
