A great study conducted at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and published in PLOS ONE has found that just 248mg of magnesium per day leads to an astounding reversal of depression symptoms in study subjects.

Physicians report that mental health problems including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, anti-social and learning disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders often have a common cause: insufficient nutrients in the brain. Nutritionally-oriented physicians assert that the cure for these problems is to give the body the extra nutrients it needs, especially when under abnormal stress.

Orthomolecular (Clinical Nutrition) medical researchers say the future of psychiatry is in nutrition because nutrition has such a long, safe and effective history of correcting many mental problems. Nutrients such as the B-vitamins are most successful when taken regularly, taken in relatively high doses, and taken in conjunction with vitamin C, the essential fatty acids (EFA’s), and the minerals magnesium and selenium.
This new study is broken down by Mike Adams on the Natural News Website. This is a very well researched study. The breakdown of the information in the study by Natural news is a great read. Enjoy

As I understand.. Magnesium is mostly stored in the heart and brain. It is involved in 350 different chemical functions in the body.. It is the chemical involved in energy production for example.

Picked up Earl Mindell's "Vitamin Bible" in '93... still learning from it today... I see so many posts that are "reading my mind" today, just skyped a friend a few hours ago, telling them they are deficient in magnesium! (suffer depression, manic episodes...) then again I could say this to anyone and be correct more than 50% of the time... this goes with many vitamins and mineral today... most recent 'discovery': looked into nascent iodine, this is such a no brainer (but under the radar) saw results in weeks on a persistent skin condition, after finding out Great Lakes is a "goiter region" (low/non existent iodine in soil...) everyone should study food/vitamin/mineral content... re iodine: best buy is Global Healing Center, they deliver FREE in US / Canada! (thank you God!... '; ] they supply Alex Jones' label... still looking into the best magnesium supplements...

It has been found that the essential amino acid phenylalanine makes up tyrosine which is the most important chemical that makes up dopamine in the brain, dopamine is what works against depression, anxiety... Tyrosine can be found in soy products, bananas, chicken, beef, fish, green tea, almonds, watermelon, avocados, dairy products, yogurt, lima beans, coffee, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds.

I think that by creating a diet that is rich in tyrosine, magnesium and other anti-depression chemicals with the right base foods can be paramount to a good overall health.

Furthermore, studies have shown that there are a number of ways of being that tend to produce results working for rather than against dopamine, I will go through a number of them. Integrity is a key component to success, with meaningful pleasure rich activities on top you are likely not going to force your dopamine levels down. Getting high quality exercise, air and light is also good. Studies also find that simplification is essential - a simple/peaceful/delighted/loving/kind/grateful/accepting approach to life produces a being that quiets the mind enough and allows life to be, this reduces overthinking which in turn protects from dopamine level drops.

Psychologically there are supporting qualities that can help towards light moods. Joking a lot, listening to good music, having meaningful discussions, being selfless, sexy and positive, seeking excitement and having fun and also balancing this with spiritual creativity and integrity - compassion, unconditional love, truth seeking - creates good conditions for high dopamine levels and a healthy being both individually and socially.

If you take magnesium supplements I recommend using a mortar and pestle to grind them down to pico sizes in order for it to be better absorbed. This generally removes any laxative effect as well.
