Hi, Folks:

Some of you reading this will be aware of many recent problems with Skype. For Mac users, with older systems, Skype has stopped being supported altogether. That means that Skype will NOT work on any Mac OS older than OS 10.9.

But, if this has affected you, here's the fix.

Do this if you're running OS 10.6 - 10.8, as I am.

1) Go find Skype.app in your Applications folder.
2) Right-click on that (or ctrl-click, on a keyboard), and a menu of options appears.
3) Choose Show Package Contents.
4) In that folder, there's another folder called Contents.
5) In Contents, there's a little file called info.plist.

You should now be looking at this:

6) Now, download this file: (It's been edited — by myself, don't worry! — to do what the old one refuses to do any more.)

http://projectavalon.net/Info.plist.zip

7) Double-click on that to unzip it. It's now simply called Info.plist.
8) Drag that to REPLACE the old Info.plist. You should get a little window that asks you

http://projectavalon.net/Replace.gif

9) Click Replace.

That's it. Open your old copy of Skype, and it'll now work again just fine.

For non-geeks, what we've kind of done here is tricked your old Skype into thinking it's a newer version.

Skype has done it again: blocked users of Mac OS 10.6.8 from using Skype, even with the patch I created — see my post #1 above.

So I edited the patch again, and Skype now works once more.

Follow the exact instructions above. The little info.plist file I initially edited is now updated, and the older version has been overwritten on the server.

I'm a windows OS user and I don't use skype but I'm dealing with an escalating number of similar issues here. Nearly all youtube videos fail to play, gmail locks up or does erratic things like lose what I've typed, websites I visit often hang with a white screen and an endless 'waiting' symbol.

Html5 video will not work, and Adobe flash player updater has refused to run on my PC for nearly 2 years.

I'm nearly OFF LINE now and almost don't even care.

I've tried using later versions of windows but I can't get much work done with them. My offline work flow is very dependent on the system I'm clinging on to at great cost of on-line troubles.

When a computer stops being my tool box and starts to become a bossy controller, that's it, I've had it. I refuse to be funnelled in the direction I'm expected to go if I want to remain on line. I'm not sure I really want to be on line THAT much. My relationship with the 'creator' has never once come down to an email chat, I suspect the creator isn't on-line either. That sounds good enough for me, too :)
