it's not just medicine that 3D printing could benefit. The latest printing technique could be used to print food, ridding the world of food insecurity and mitigating global warming. According to the experts, the technology massively decreases food waste, cuts costs and streamlines supply chains, while 3D-printed meat, which has already arrived, could significantly reduce our reliance on livestock farming.

They already are 3d printed ( crowns that is) some dentists just take scans of teeth & email that to the people who make the crowns, but they don't make huge profits, the dentists do. They charge astronomical sums for some things that cost very little to have made.

Making teeth that could replace living teeth is going to require a whole different approach because no dentist is trained to do that, if it's even possible ?

Just seen Mashikas post, the denture making looks very time consuming & you would need a heck of a lot of those machines to churn out what a dental lab normally makes in a day. False teeth for traditionally made dentures come in packs depending on size & colour & are really quite cheap, it will come down to costs I suppose, but the transition is going to require a lot of investment.

Can you imagine how fast the internet will eventually become for everyone and the amount of information that you and send in a split second will be amazing?

Japan Sets New World Record for 1 Million Gigabits Data Transmission Per Second

Even if you're enjoying gloriously fast broadband at home wherever you live in the world, you're still going to be a long, long way behind the new record for data transmission: an incredible 1.02 petabits per second.

That's a million gigabits shifted down a line every single second. The record was set by a team at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan, transmitting the data over 51.7 kilometers (32 miles).

To put it another way, there's enough bandwidth here to transmit not just one 8K video feed, or a hundred or a thousand 8K video feeds, but 10 million 8K video feeds simultaneously. That's a lot of Netflix.

One of the exciting aspects of the new data transmission speed record is that researchers achieved it using an optical fiber network not dissimilar to those currently used for internet infrastructure. This, the researchers say, should make future upgrades towards this sort of speed easier.

Only a year ago, researchers from the same institute were getting maximum speeds around a third of what they've now managed, showing the rapid development of the technology.

The experiment used 0.125 mm diameter multi-core fiber (MCF), with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) acting as the magic ingredient: This technology means signals of different wavelengths are sent simultaneously through the line. A total of 801 parallel wavelength channels were packed into the same line.

Another innovation was to use four cores instead of the standard one, essentially quadrupling the routes for data to take, all while keeping the cable the same size as a standard optical fiber line. Researchers also applied various other optimization, signal boosting, and decoding technologies.

In specialized experiments like this one, there's usually a balance between distance and speed – high speeds are harder to maintain over longer distances. The team plans to continue to improve both transmission speed and transmission distance in their future research.

While the same group of researchers hit the petabit milestone back in December 2020, they used more complicated technology that required extra work to encode and decode the signals. The system used in this case is easier to implement in actual physical networks and more like the infrastructure that already exists.

With 5G also continuing to roll out across the world, the signs are good for a future of gadgets hooked up to an always-on, high-speed internet connection – although the number of devices that need to get online continues to rise rapidly.

"Beyond 5G, an explosive increase of data traffic from new information and communication services is expected and it is therefore crucial to demonstrate how new fibers can meet this demand," according to a NICT press release.

"It is hoped that this result will help the realization of new communication systems able to support new bandwidth hungry services."

The research was presented in May at the International Conference on Laser and Electro-Optics (CLEO) 2022.

Fifteen years ago, David Glowacki was walking in the mountains when he took a sharp fall. When he hit the ground, blood began leaking into his lungs. As he lay there suffocating, Glowacki’s field of perception swelled. He peered down at his own body—and, instead of his typical form, saw that he was made up of balled-up light.

“I knew that the intensity of the light was related to the extent to which I inhabited my body,” he recalls. Yet watching it dim didn’t frighten him. From his new vantage point, Glowacki could see that the light wasn’t disappearing. It was transforming—leaking out of his body into the environment around him.

This realization—which he took to signify that his awareness could outlast and transcend his physical form—brought Glowacki a sublime sense of peace. So he approached what he thought was death with curiosity: What might come next?

Since his accident, Glowacki—an artist and computational molecular physicist—has worked to recapture that transcendence.

A VR experience called Isness-D is his latest effort. And on four key indicators used in studies of psychedelics, the program showed the same effect as a medium dose of LSD or psilocybin (the main psychoactive component of “magic” mushrooms), according to a recent study in Nature Scientific Reports.

Isness-D is designed for groups of four to five people based anywhere in the world. Each participant is represented as a diffuse cloud of smoke with a ball of light right about where a person’s heart would be.

Participants can partake in an experience called energetic coalescence: they gather in the same spot in the virtual-reality landscape to overlap their diffuse bodies, making it impossible to tell where each person begins and ends. The resulting sense of deep connectedness and ego attenuation mirrors feelings commonly brought about by a psychedelic experience.

Turning down ego

Psychedelics are a class of drugs unified by their ability to alter sensory perception and change the way we process information. Clinical trials incorporating these drugs, which have resurged after being shuttered in the 1970s, have demonstrated that psychedelic-assisted therapy is remarkably good at alleviating symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression, which have standard treatments that fail many. The FDA designated psilocybin as a “breakthrough therapy” for severe depression in 2019, fast-tracking its approval process.

Glowacki didn’t design Isness-D with the goal of replicating a psychedelic trip. But he was interested in using VR to produce something psychedelics reliably elicit—what’s known as a “self-transcendent experience.”

Self-transcendent experiences exist on a spectrum. Getting lost in a great book could be considered a weak one; the ego death that high doses of psychedelics can induce is on the opposite end. In psychedelic clinical trials, people who report more intense feelings of self-transcendence typically also see the most significant symptom improvements.

What marks a self-transcendent experience is the dissolution of our typical self-definition as a discrete individual, separate from other people and the environment. During such an experience, a deep feeling of unity with other people or your surroundings allows you to expand your self-concept to include them.

There are many routes to a self-transcendent experience. Near-death experiences like Glowacki’s often momentarily blur the boundaries of the self. The overview effect—the feeling astronauts reliably report after seeing Earth from space—creates a sense of connection with humanity as a whole. Meditation can also help people reach self-transcendence.

Isness-D is another route. To create it, Glowacki took aesthetic inspiration from quantum mechanics—as he puts it, “where the definition of what’s matter and what’s energy starts to become blurred.”

For their paper, Glowacki and his collaborators measured the emotional response Isness-D elicited in 75 participants. They based their measurements on four metrics used in psychedelics research—the MEQ30 (a mystical experience questionnaire), the ego dissolution inventory scale, the “communitas” scale, and the “inclusion of community in self” scale. Communitas is defined as an experience of intense shared humanity that transcends social structure. Participants’ responses were then compared with those given in published, double-blind psychedelics studies.

For all four metrics, Isness-D elicited responses indistinguishable from those associated with medium doses of psychedelics. On the mystical experience scale, Isness-D participants reported an experience as intense as that elicited by 20 milligrams of psilocybin or 200 micrograms of LSD, and stronger than that induced by microdoses of either substance.

My VR trip

Last week, I decided to try Isness-D for myself. The three other participants in my Isness-D session—who tuned in from Portugal, Italy, and California—were already arranged in a circle facing one another by the time I arrived. The landscape surrounding us was sparse and gray, with a sky that reminded me of the moment before dawn. Looking down at where my hands should have been, I saw two dull lights, which I could brighten by pressing the controller I held in each hand.

The only object in the barren landscape was a “molecular thread”—a long string of one of the simplest amino acids, alanine, which wiggled with lifelike spontaneity. (“We had some physics models lying around for how to simulate its motion in real time,” Glowacki explains.) At the start, we were instructed to hold the thread and state something we wanted to connect to better, as if we were infusing it with this intention.

hen a narration directed our thoughts and movements like a guided meditation. When it came time to energetically coalesce, the gentle voice instructed us to scoot a little closer. Then we moved closer still, until we left our four corners and met in the center of the circle—four clumps of smoke billowing together.

As we inched nearer, I worried about infringing upon the other participants’ personal space. Then I remembered that oceans and thousands of miles separated me from them—and wasn’t ditching the notion of personal space the whole point? So I tried to settle into the intimacy.

“What happens in VR is that sense of completely forgetting about the existence of the external world,” says Agnieszka Sekula, a PhD candidate at the Centre for Human Psychopharmacology in Australia and a cofounder of a company that uses VR to enhance psychedelic therapy. “So there is definitely similarity there to this sense of experiencing an alternate reality under psychedelics that feels more real than what’s actually out there.”

But, she adds, “there’s definitely differences between what a psychedelic experience feels like and what virtual reality feels like.” Because of this, she appreciates that Isness-D charts a new path to transcendence instead of just mimicking one that existed already.

More research is needed on the enduring effects of an Isness-D experience and whether virtual reality, in general, can induce benefits similar to psychedelics. The dominant theory on how psychedelics improve clinical outcomes (a debate far from settled) is that their effect is driven by both the subjective experience of a trip and the drug’s neurochemical effect on the brain. Since VR only mirrors the subjective experience, its clinical benefit, which has yet to be rigorously tested, may not be as strong.

Jacob Aday, a psychiatry researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, says he wishes the study had measured participants’ mental wellness. He thinks VR likely can downregulate the default mode network—a brain network that’s active when our thoughts aren’t directed at a specific task, and which psychedelics can suppress (scientists theorize that this is what causes ego death). People shown awe-inspiring videos have diminished activity in this network. VR is better at inducing awe than regular video, so Isness-D might similarly dial it down.

Already, a startup called aNUma that spun out of Glowacki’s lab allows anyone with a VR headset to sign up for Isness sessions weekly. The startup sells a shortened version of Isness-D to companies for virtual wellness retreats, and provides a similar experience called Ripple to help patients, their families, and their caregivers cope with terminal illness. A coauthor of the paper describing Isness-D is even piloting it in couples and family therapy.

“What we’ve found is that representing people as pure luminosity really releases them from a lot of judgments and projections,” Glowacki says. That includes negative thoughts about their body and prejudices. He has personally facilitated aNUma sessions for cancer patients and their loved ones. One, a woman with pancreatic cancer, died days later. The last time she and her friends gathered was as mingling balls of light.

For one phase of my Isness-D experience, moving created a brief electric trail that marked where I’d just been. After a few moments of this, the narration prodded: “What does it feel like to see the past?” I started to think of people from my past who I missed or had hurt. In sloppy cursive, I used my finger to write their names in the air. Just as quickly as I scribbled them, I watched them vanish.

Scientists have created and patented an innovative shock-absorbing material that could bring both the defense and planetary science sectors a notch higher.

The breakthrough study conducted by United Kingdom’s University of Kent researchers, led by Professors Ben Goult and Jen Hiscock, indicated that the protective material known as talin could ensure the safety of military and police personnel, as well as guard airplanes and spacecraft against flying debris.

Named TSAM (Talin Shock Absorbing Materials), this novel protein-based family of materials represents the first known example of a synthetic biology material capable of absorbing supersonic projectile impacts.

The research titled “Next generation protein-based materials capture and preserve projectiles from supersonic impacts” adapted the ends of three switches and then linked them together using water and a gelling agent to form a mesh. When something hits it, the energy unfolds the modified talin rather than converting into heat.

A piston fired tiny particles of basalt and larger pieces of shrapnel at a sample placed in front of an aluminum plate during the experiments. They found that even at supersonic speeds of a mile a second, twice as fast as firearm bullets, the gel stopped them in their tracks.

The recent discovery opens the door for the development of next-generation bulletproof armor and projectile capture materials to enable the study of hypervelocity impacts in space and the upper atmosphere.

“Each molecule has 13 ‘switches’ that can unfold when force is applied,” Goult said in a statement. “These refold after the force is removed – enabling shock absorption…protecting our cells from the effects of large force changes.”

The team compared the armor that could be developed with TSAM with the traditional body armor.

The current one has a bulky ceramic face with a fiber-reinforced composite backing, which may be ineffective against kinetic energy and can cause physical trauma to the body behind the armor. Also, the existing version of body armor frequently sustains permanent damage after a hit, preventing continued usage due to reduced structural integrity.

On the other hand, a possible talin-based armor “offers a lighter, more durable armor shielding the wearer from a wider spectrum of injuries – including those brought on by shock,” Goult said.

TSAM may also replace gels used in the industry, which are prone to melting due to temperature increases brought on by projectile impact. The team is already working with a company to develop the material as a component of body armor.

Talin makes tendon-muscle connections last a lifetime

Talin, considered an essential integrin-binding protein, was found to be the main reason why muscle and tendon connections last a lifetime by international research in 2019.

In the study, researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Germany used fruit flies to determine how this particular human protein controls mechanical stress on muscle-tendon attachments. (Related: Biologists identify the protein that makes tendon-muscle connections last a lifetime.)

The researchers inserted a fluorescent force sensor into the protein talin to investigate molecular forces using microscopy methods. They found that despite being abundantly present in muscle-tendon attachments, only a small portion of talin molecules deal with mechanical forces at the same time. These molecules dynamically share the mechanical load to provide support and stability to muscle-tendon attachments.

The study showed that less than 15 percent of the protein molecules “felt” measurable forces in developing muscle attachments in an intact organism. It was a pleasant surprise because previous studies had shown that 70 percent of all talin molecules are exposed to high forces in so-called focal adhesions when cells are placed on hard plastic or glass substrates in the laboratory.

The scientists then reduced the number of talin molecules present in the flight muscles of fruit flies using molecular genetic methods.

While the flies were still able to survive after the intervention, their muscle-tendon connections ruptured during the first flight attempts. These results demonstrate that connections between cells must dynamically adapt to the needs of each tissue to ensure lifelong function.

The BMW i Vision Dee combines digital and analogue into a complete whole. The vision vehicle brings virtual worlds into the car and opens up new levels of interaction. As soon as you settle in the driver’s seat, you enter a new world. This is achieved first and foremost by the BMW Mixed Reality Slider and the advanced BMW Head-Up-Display. The standard-production version of this will be used in the models of the NEUE KLASSE from 2025 onwards.

The BMW Mixed Reality Slider displays content in five different levels – ranging from analogue, to driving-related information, to the contents of the communications system, to augmented-reality projection, right up to entry into virtual worlds.

In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates the huge potential of projection technology and BMW i Vision Dee visualises how an advanced Head-Up-Display could also be utilised in the future for the display and operating concept.

The BMW i Vision Dee has nine different facial expressions.

The vision vehicle is emotionally intelligent: It interacts with its environment. The vehicle uses its numerous sensors to register the identity and position of the person and reacts when they approach. Automatically opening doors welcome the driver as they approach the cockpit.

Headlights and the closed BMW kidney grille form a uniform surface that stages a multimedia welcoming scenario of light, graphics and sounds – including nine different facial expressions. It has many emotions ranging from joy to approval to amazement.

Colour-change technology and reductive design inside and out.

It is not just the facial expressions - the exterior colour is individual too. Following the debut of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink at CES 2022, the BMW Group presented the BMW i Vision Dee, the world’s first full-colour version of this technology. The BMW i Vision Dee is able to display up to 32 different colours.

The design of BMW i Vision Dee has been consciously pared down to focus attention on the digital experience and the DNA of the BMW brand. The exterior is defined by the classic three-box sedan design that forms the core of the BMW brand. Traditional design elements, like the BMW kidney grille, twin circular headlights and the Hofmeister kink, are reimagined, with phygital icons replacing analogue elements. This gives BMW i Vision Dee its own digital, but human, character.

This outer appearance is reflected in the interior: the interior picks up on the clean design. Digitality and a feel-good character are in the foreground. A clear design, tranquil colours, warm and textile surfaces create a pleasant feeling. The footwell between the driver’s and front passenger’s seats is continuous, and the rear seat extends into the doors. The steering wheel, pedals and gear selector are the only physical controls. The vision vehicle reinforces the emotional connection between cars and people.

The future of the BMW Group is electric, circular and digital. The BMW i Vision Dee is dedicated to the “digital” aspect of this trio and shows a preview of the digital future of the BMW Group.

That's y so many ppl come to Perú to get their teeth fixed, it's super cheap compared to other countries. a recommendation if any one of you wants to do some tourism+ at the same time getting ur teeth fixed.although, right now my country is fuvked up and not a good moment to visit(we are in the middle of a possible Civil War going off).
